  1. I wonder if it'd be someone like Terry McGinness. Being a Batman from a different time period might get around the obvious obstacles in using the concept.
  2. IIRC, the mission was in 1956. So if that was the year that young Hank was born, he'd be thirteen or fourteen in 1970. Which seemed about right to me, though I'm really bad at identifying children's ages.
  3. Eobard may have already heard the nickname. There was a point in Turncoat, where brainwashed Rip says something like "the Legion will reward me, and could reward you too" to Jax. It struck me as odd at the time, since I couldn't figure out where Rip would have learned the nickname. Except maybe as Phil.
  4. Though Rip's account to Ray in Leviathan indicated he had broken that rule himself, by the repeated attempts to save his family. But they kept dying anyway. Either because "time wants to happen" or because of Time Master sabotage. Maybe it has to do with trying to undo your own decisions. We did see that "Mr. Rory" had sent Hourman back to warn the crew. Maybe it has to do with that?
  5. I had the same reaction. That is an INCREDIBLY unenlightening synopsis. What IS the cardinal rule of time travel? Because I feel like they've broken all the rules all of the time. Including crossing their own timelines.
  6. I agree with this. Rip actually DID come up with a means to track Heywood. The team just beat him to it. And Rip had an idea at the same time that Sara said to infiltrate NASA. He just didn't spit it out fast enough. And his attempt to make contact with Heywood would have been fine if Heywood hadn't decided to blame Rip for his own decision and deck him instead. I think the slightly heavy handed execution wasn't so much about making Rip look inept as to show how much he still needs to recover from his experience. But in the process, we see him asking Sara about her decisions (I didn't think his "why" was a challenge, I thought he genuinely wanted to know) and presumably learning from what he sees.
  7. I think Darvill's other gigs are primarily theatre, and those don't pay tremendously well. Hopefully, he likes having a regular paycheck and a summer vacation that lets him do other projects. I've decided not to worry about it, and just nosily peer at the man's twitter. If his location changes from London/Vancouver, then I'll get worried. :-P It's probably not realistic, but I'm really hoping the thing about changing casts is a fake out. I really don't want to lose any of these characters at this point. Even Nate has been growing on me, much to my surprise.
  8. I don't think Rip's behavior would have been strange if they'd had the conversation on screen. I didn't get the idea that he was consciously trying to take leadership. It's just that there were certain things he was used to doing for these missions. Back when Rip was leading, he would have been the one using Gideon to track Heywood down. And he was used to having the general plan. I think the real issue is that, from Rip's perspective, a lot less time has passed since Out of Time than for the rest of the group. We don't know how long he was Phil Gasmer, but he hadn't really been RIP during that time. Then of course, he was captured and brainwashed. While we know he does have memories of that time, it's still got to be a mind boggling experience. For Rip, as Rip, his experiences through the second season may well be summed up as: he reaches for the time drive, then wakes up in the infirmary a few hours before they go to find Commander Heywood. He's had a LOT to readjust to in a short amount of time. I don't think he was faking it when they were in the lander originally. There was no gravity then, and no possibility for friction. I think he might have been faking it once they were on the moon proper. Or just uneasy about trying to use his speed in that environment (especially if the Black Flash came after him: he'd have nowhere to run.)
  9. I think the issue, in both cases, was where exactly was he going to go from there? Presumably, he'd be able to leave the lander to the moon, but he doesn't have oxygen or a space suit. He can't run from the moon to Earth, so he still needs a way home. Likewise, he could escape the Waverider and end up in a vacuum. He needed the Waverider to get back to Earth just as much as the crew did. So it makes sense that he wouldn't try to escape until afterward.
  10. From the Moonshot thread: Definitely a good idea to move it here, I think. In terms of story, Rip's got a lot of potential going forward. He's a loner prone to keep secrets who now gets to learn how to be a team player. He's a character who's been very badly burned by authority figures in the past, who has to learn how to trust having someone else call the shots. And ultimately I think we're either poised for a "Rip finds himself" storyline, where we'll see Rip use the more unique aspects of his character (experience/skills/et cetera) to find a place in the group, or a "Rip gets his groove back" storyline which will give us Rip actually learning how to be a better leader and retaking at least part of his old position in the end. And however this ends up playing out will give a lot of potential storyline beats for season 3. I think they've been doing a really interesting thing with Rip's character this year. There's been this nice, subtle, possibly accidental theme of exploring who Rip is as a person. We've gotten "Phil Gasmer" (a version of Rip without any of the knowledge, skills and experience that he has as a Time Master or Legend), we've gotten Rip as rewritten by the Legion, (a version of Rip without the morality, with the extra bonus of showing us exactly how dangerous that set of knowledge, skills and experience can be as an enemy), and now we're getting a version of Rip who has been removed of his role. Hopefully, leading to us seeing what Rip brings to the table aside from questionable leadership. And when you add that in to his other potential story beats: finishing the spear this season, the whatever-it-is with Gideon (which wasn't overtly mentioned this episode, but I thought it was notable that he used the term "human shield"), and general recovery themes. I really do think it seems likely they'll keep him around. I've been wrong before and I'll be very sad if I'm wrong again, but IMO, it seems far more likely that they intend to keep him.
  11. This probably doesn't mean much because I've believed Darvill was staying all along. This episode made me more convinced though. There are so many directions his story can take moving forward. I have a very hard time believing that they'd set up something like this, which seems like a kind of character arc that would easily continue into season 3 if they meant to get rid of him.
  12. Gideon also still called Rip Captain at the end of Land of the Lost (after Sara left). It would be interesting to know what she thinks about everything. I agree that I don't think the crew was intentionally excluding Rip. They've just gotten used to his absence. They are also a lot more competent now. So, Rip needs to get used to the idea that he doesn't have to go off and research or plan alone. They just need to readjust to each other.
  13. I'd actually figured there was an off screen discussion in Land of the Lost, because of the way that Martin quickly corrected himself from "Captain" to "Mister Hunter" in that episode. Martin isn't a cruel man, and he actually openly liked and respected Rip. He can sometimes be insensitive, but not enough that he wouldn't realize how that kind of overt demotion might feel like a slap in the face to someone who'd already been through as much as Rip had. Sara also had referred to Rip as Captain repeatedly in his mind. And she smiled when they both responded to Gideon. He's the one who backed off. My guess is that at some point after waking up, but before the bridge scene, Rip outright said "I can't do this". It would fit with this episode, since Rip only challenged her the once, and he didn't remotely try to pull rank even then.
  14. I missed Rip's sarcasm. :-) I think it's understandable that Rip is out of sorts in how exactly he fits in the group. He's had a really rough couple of episodes and has come back to find out that everything's changed in his absence. Eventually, I'm sure, he'll remember that he has a lot of skills, knowledge and expertise that the rest of the crew doesn't have, and adapt accordingly.
  15. As a Rip fan, I was pretty happy with the resolution. That surprises me a bit, because I'd have figured I'd be more opposed to Sara being sole Captain, but this worked out pretty well. I liked that he was trying to get used to it, as opposed to actively fighting her for leadership. And really, this has a lot of really interesting story potential for Rip going forward. :-)
  16. I think, arguably, it did. Because the ship crash/time scatter led to Rip himself getting kidnapped and turned. If not for that, the Legion wouldn't have been able to get so many of the spear fragments. They might still have gotten the halves of the medallion, but the medallion wasn't nearly as precise as having the man who hid the spear fragments telling them where to go.
  17. I rather like the idea of personalized punishments. I wonder if we'll get any hint of the others' fates.
  18. Gideon still calls Rip Captain. She did it when he apologized, after Sara had already left the room. I don't really think we can draw any conclusions about Gideon's notion of the chain of command at this point in time. Next episode may clarify.
  19. There really isn't anyone on the team qualified to give him professional help. None of them are therapists. And honestly, most of them show a few signs of trauma or mental illness themselves. Gideon's the closest thing they have to any kind of medical professional (with Martin, Ray or Rip assisting), but from what we've seen of the Time Masters, I don't think mental health was high on their list of priorities.
  20. Ray hadn't ever met a granddaughter of Kendra though. The original Legends had been recruited by Rip as people who would not make any further marks on history. Amaya is different, and part of her significance is in having her granddaughter, Mari (who has done some fairly significant things during her guest appearances on Arrow and in her own series). Telling Amaya about her future ahead of time may well lead to a fairly big time aberration, or other disaster.
  21. Of all the romances that could possibly become canon, I never expected Rip/Gideon. But I'm here for it. :-)
  22. I think I'm one of the few fans who actually likes Laurel, so I'm sad to hear that. I would have liked to see Sara get a bit more resolution to her story arc than just a quick vision. (Even though I actually enjoyed the vision of Miranda and Jonas in the first season's finale.)
  23. I could swear I saw something stating that the finale would be aired during the first week of April. But I honestly don't remember where I saw that, or how it would work with iZombie.
  24. Rip has just as much of a potential role as any other character going forward. We don't know what the metaplot is likely to be, obviously, but there are a lot of possibilities. If they decide for example to deal with the Thanagarians, Rip is the only one who knows that invasion is happening or knows what they are. If they decide to use the remnants of the Time Masters, then that would be a conflict with Rip's former family. If they use time pirates...Rip has a past with them too. And if the metaplot is something new, they will probably still find a way to tie it to Rip like they did with the spear. This is a time travel show and Rip is the time travel character (since 1960). There are years of material to exploit if they run out of their own ideas. Caity Lotz posted an image from her last scene filmed. That is not the last scene aired. Not every character is in every scene. (Purcell posted one from his last filmed scene and it was with Snart.) It is not a guarantee obviously. But it is very unlikely that they're ditching him after everything they've already done to keep him. Maybe the best thing is to keep an eye on Darvill's twitter. If he lists his hometown as London, instead of London/Vancouver, then I would get a little nervous.
  25. I admit, most of my impression came from season one, not necessarily season two. But there were a number of interviews after the finale where he was pretty critical of the show and I got the impression, possibly unfairly, that he wasn't very happy with the general experience. They've made a lot of changes in season two, so perhaps his particular concerns were met. He may be happier now than he seemed then.
