  1. Wow. I saw "Into the Woods" on Broadway, (I went to Broadway about 3 times a month when I lived in NYC), and this really adds depths to this episode!

Sue, I've become so redundant telling you how much I enjoy your posts! You've made me see layers I would never pick up on. Thank you!

  2. I don't know if this will make you feel any better, catrox, but I don't think the show is heading for sexy times with Dean and Amara. Now, the show has a terrible track record with regards to sex and consent, so I could be way off base here, but I think the dynamic they're going for is much like Lucifer and with Sam in S5. He kept telling Sam how much he liked him and he would never hurt him and that Sam would be his vessel...so on and so forth. It wasn't sexual, though. And, IMO, Dean's responding to Amara much like Sam did in S5, "Wow, the Darkness likes me, I don't really know how to respond to that."

Also, I wonder if we shouldn't be asking ourselves, if Amara had been personified as a male, would we be having the same discussion?

Maybe they will go there, though, but I'm guessing not...maybe...perhaps...um...uh...oh shit...;)

Walked right into that one didn't you Dot? You gave me a good laugh, and I thank you for that!

  3. Thanks Omegamom, I'll check it out! Just hope I don't get scared to death, again!

Hey 7kstar! you got me when I read, "What if only a loved one can rescue you?" Man, I am becoming a junkie for this stuff!

  4. So does that make Amara the triangle or the cowbell? To subvert all expectations, this is one case where I do not need more cowbell.

Zanne, this made me laugh like hell! Mick loves the cowbell and made his drummer get one! Great way to lighten the discussion!

Am I really being that unclear in my discussion?. It's fine if you don't agree with me but please ask me questions before putting words in my mouth about this.  I'm not the only person who is side eying this.

Given the show's recent propensity to put Dean into the worst possible light since he took on the MoC i.e. demon!Dean pawing strippers, the Mark turning him into a murdering murderer that murders, who wanted Sam dead instead of Charlie, who was thisclose to killing Cas, even this season is having to be constantly reminded about "not killing" (which BTW fuck that), I'm sideyeing this very hard.

Me wanting that unambiguous clarification does not mean I think Dean IS doing something inappropriate. It's not me saying this is who Dean is. I'm looking for a preemptive clarification before it goes a direction I'm not comfortable with re Dean and a teenage!Amara. And no I don't want Dean being controlled whatsoever but that would make more sense than to this point, based on the limited information we have right now.

Sometimes, I think you give the writers too much credit. As much as it sucks, I often think they don't have the depth and insight we do to the characters.

  5. Not that anyone would miss me or anything....but this computer is acting screwy, and on Monday, a super geek friend of Mick's is taking our main computer to de-bug and clean up. He's done it before and it gets lightning fast when he's done. He's also going to install a virus program he wrote. I'll be here until Sunday night, but if I vanish for awhile that's why.

Our laptop is all football, and don't even mention the phone! I'm lucky I know how to use the damn apps!

  6. As usual, I bought this discussion to Mick. He said, "It's a little uncomfortable, I don't know how else to put it." So he hates the vibe between Amara and Dean too. As he said, "He's biding his time, and waiting for her eighteenth birthday" but he does believe Dean could and will control it.

I still like SueB's point of view better.

  7. With the specific cover of the final song being from Pulp Fiction, I went back to watch the scene in that movie.

    ****Pulp Fiction Spoilers!!!! ****

In the movie, you seen Vincent debating about whether to be loyal and just go home or whether to purse the wife (Mia). From Vincent's POV, the music is in the background and not his focus.

The song, however, is clearly about Mia. IMO it's about Mia exploring doing what SHE wants to do, rather than being the trophy wife. Its definitely a sense of freedom and empowerment on her part. But she is pretty much a threat to Vincent as death is fairly certain if he messes with the bosses' wife. In short, her empowerment is both joyful and dangerous. And then she finds heroin in Vincent's coat pocket that she is wearing. Thinking its cocaine, she happily snorts it (because she WANTS to), and dies.

So while Vincent has decided to stay loyal, Mia, in her freedom and recklessness has gotten herself killed. Which is going to completely mess up Vincent's life.

To me, it's a pretty good analogy for Dean and Amara. The song is for Amara and an expression of freedom for her. Dean, on the other hand, is totally screwed. By having this connection with Amara, even if he does the right things, Amara is seriously going to mess up his existence.

And while Vincent/Mia DID have that sexy times potential, the song was less about that and more about Mia's freedom costing Vincent dearly.

Damn it, SueB! Where were you when I was forced to take literature classes in grad school? I love to read, but I was forced to take the classes because my advisor said I was too focused on math and science. Your post is so thought provoking and insightful.

    I'm damn impressed!

  8. Guys, and Mods, I know this site is a politics free zone, but I studied for a year in Paris, and have friends and family that live there.

I spoke with 23 people tonight. They're all fine. But my heart is broken.

  9. It could very well be that there were, but I generally don't remember most of the "stunt demons" - unless they make an impression on me - so I can't say for sure if the wall flick was a typical demon capability or not. You very well could be correct. However, Meg and Ruby were not just low ranking demons, so what they can do isn't necessarily representative of what just your average demon might be able to do, but maybe someone else remembers a no-name demon being able to do the wall flick?

First off, Babblesmuch, I love your screen name! Mick says I blab too much, so we're sisters!

Second, I hate both you and Awesom0400, (Awesom's used to this) because now I'm going to have to rewatch the entire series to figure out the "hand wave" thing! Unless of course, catrox chimes in. She would know!

  10. Rewatch thoughts....

When Crowley said to Amara; "You're strong, but I'm stronger." I wanted him to say: "You're strong, but I'm Crowley."

Dean knew Jenny Jones from hearing a bit over the phone! Mad skills! Plus, he's spent too much time watching T.V.

Cas sure as hell mastered that remote fast. It takes us weeks every time we get an new DVR!

Dean seamed very happy to finally be able to kill something. I'm referring to the demon that came after Goldie.

I agree with Amara about memes!

Legalized pot brings down souls in hell by 40%?! I buy that!

So Amara is waiting to settle an old score. Is she gunning for God?

Didn't get Cas doubting that Dean couldn't kill Amara, or believe he hesitated to. "What part of God's friggin' sister didn't you understand?" did it for me. I think Sam was more concerned with the visions he's been having than Dean and Amara. I'm convinced now we're going to see Lucifer.

  11. Quick question, off topic (Mods, please be kind!), but Metatron made me think of this. In the past year or so there was a movie out about a videographer who went to crime scenes at night. Anyone remember the movie? I can't remember the name and it's killing me!

  12. Well that was a HUGE freaking episode.  I have to be short (again) as I have an early am meeting.

    First impressions:

    - I loved the emotional intimacy of Cas/Dean/Sam.  Dean trying not to push Cas but giving him the pep talk to step away from the TV.  Sam teasing Dean about the Summer of Love and Dean not getting pissed off. To me, it's sort of like: 'we ALL have issues' so it's not a judging thing, more like commiserating.

    - Crowley/Dean bromance.  Crowley: 'I wish I could quit you' speech. And Dean still had one of Crowley's phone rants on his voice mail from over a year ago???  I think it's very interesting how Crowley is struggling to figure out what he's doing.  I was weirdly proud of him for thinking he could take Dean out.  BUT I also think he's silently glad he didn't actually kill him.

    - Crowley being COMPLETELY honest with Amara was also really fascinating to me.

    - They continue to do a good job of getting actresses to play Amara.  I still think 6 year old Amara was best (thus far), but this one did a good job of being a mercurial teen.

    - Dean/Amara. I actually found this less pervy than last time.  Last time Amara was perving on Dean. This time, she's confused by her own fascination.  And Dean? Man is he confused. He really wanted to kill her IMO but felt REALLY bad about it.  He's conflicted but I also think something is stopping him, physically. It reminds me of when Cuthbert Sinclair did that will-sapping spell.  It just feels like Dean's will is put into a fugue state in her presence.  But it's not a force he can get his mind wrapped around. So he's not sure what is happening.  He was in such denial with Cas - "she overpowered me".  Clearly she was never going to let him hurt her but he barely took a move.  And it's freaking him out.  BUT... that final song (to me) was more of a 'threatening' vibe than a romantic vibe.  I totally get the lyrics are the grossest imaginable. For me, however, Dean has no agency in this relationship.  He's powerless in her presence. He just doesn't get how or why.  Trying from a different angle - the scenes reminded me this is a horror show.  What is happening is not sexy, it's horrific for Dean.  I feel for the guy.

    - Sam. I'm down with the 'saving people' campaign, but since when can Sam or Dean actually engage three demons in a fist fight and win?  If Sam had sprayed Holy Water and THEN fought, I'd have been happier.

    - THE CAGE.  Coolness.  I'm digging where this is going.

    - Boogertron. I always find him fascinating.  I like how he always gives us insight into Cas. Even when he's wrong, it's insightful.  And I completely agree with Cas not killing him.  He's got potential for being useful later. And killing Booger would be actually merciful.

    - Finally... LEN! NOOOOOOOO!  *sigh, we hardly new 'ya*

In short, I really liked the episode and want to think about it (with a multiple rewatches).  The squick potential doesn't bother me because I see it as a horror thing, not a sexy times. I loved the big reveals.

    Loved this entire post!

But on a side note, when I read " but this one did a good job of being a mercurial teen." all I could think of was; 7kstar would know!

  13. Oh Christ! This sucks, but you are doing the right thing, so hold on and... shit I don't know.

Last time Mick and I had to put down one of our buddies, we took everything out of the living room, buffed the floor, rotated the rug, shampooed it, polished all the furniture, took all the books out of the floor to ceiling bookcases, dusted them and then put it all back together. We drank about 3 full fifths of whiskey during this. After we were done, Mick said "Kitchen next?" We did this for three days, no sleep. Then we just lost it.

  14. I can see now how this season is going to pan out. Sam is bonded to Lucifer (Light Bearer) and Dean to Amara (The Darkness). Damn it! We're going to have the brothers at odds, again!

  15. I never got Sam and Amelia, and can't figure out why they got together. The only bond I can come up with is dogs, which we were shown in the episode "Dark Side Of the Moon.", when one of Sam's "heaven" memories involved a Golden named Bones. (I remember stuff like that because I'm a dog nut!) But this doesn't explain it enough for me.

Sam's resentment of Dean took me aback too. The Boys have always been about each other. I chalk it up to bad writing and directing. I'm disappointed the actors didn't correct it, they know these characters!

  16. Welp, this sounds not good :(. So much for TFW....

    *Emphasis mine.

This has me so disappointed! TFW is a small bit of hope for me, and while Cas and the Boys have had their falling outs from time to time, they always seem to come back to each other. Trust is such a huge issue in this show! Why can't these three figure it out?
