  1. I second the recommendation for The Gate to Women's Country (and would add Gibbon's Decline and Fall to the list of relevant Tepper), but that may be one of the worst descriptions of a setting that I've ever read, given that
  2. Becca reminds me so much of one of my relatives -- constant giant goofball, even a Colorado connection. But the relative in question can also flip a switch into get-it-done-NOW mode faster than you can drop a beat; it's kind of fearsome to watch. I'm looking forward to seeing if that's the case with Becca too.
  3. The cop half of FireCop v2 was interviewed in our local paper and said he'd applied with his brother, then they called him back and asked if he wanted to go alone. So that's at least one way they found contestants.
  4. I hadn't quite made the connection, but now that you mention it, there are certainly similarities.
  5. Shortly after the HH season ended, I saw another show (a one-off, hour-long thing) that theorized that the assorted governments did have definitive proof the Hitler was dead, but didn't do anything with that information because they found the rumors of survival beneficial -- the idea that he was alive kept the site of his death from becoming a shrine, and the search distracted any remaining followers; they'd be too busy looking for him to plot revenge. In other words: yes, there is a government conspiracy -- they're conspiring to cover up his death by ... announcing that he died without providing indisputable proof. As conspiracies go, I suppose it has the benefit of being unique ... at least as far as I know.
  6. The firefighters that came to help her had patches from Kent. (I'm also from north Seattle and spent the first part of the episode trying to figure out where they were, too.)
  7. Has anyone else been watching "Treasure Quest: Snake Island"? They've been wandering around the Misiones this season, same as the "Hunting Hitler" folks, but looking for Incan/Jesuit treasure, rather than Nazis. Mr. Blevins and I have been joking all season that they were probably more likely to find Hitler than the Incan treasure, given their somewhat iffy methods. Well, in today's episode, they found some old buildings in the jungle ... too modern to be Jesuit ... and then some pottery. With "Made in Germany" markings. Then some German coins. Then a tiled bathtub ... we just about fell off the couch laughing; it really looked like they went to the same compound as the "Hunting Hitler" people! For the record, they didn't find definitive proof of Hitler's former presence, or the Incan gold. We've started joking that maybe they'll run into Josh Gates, Scott "Minnesota Jones" Wolter, or maybe the guys from Oak Island, just in case they're listening ...
  8. Another ex-TWoPper checking in, albeit one who hasn't posted in quite a while. Same username, which still is an ancient joke from an ancient X-Files listserv and doesn't correspond to my real first or last name at all. Tomorrow Emerald City ComicCon starts. Maybe I'll make a RIP TWoP sticker and stick it on my bag.
