Melissa McCarthy Joins Nicole Kidman In ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Hulu Limited Series From David E. Kelley

Melissa McCarthy is set to star opposite Nicole Kidman in Hulu’s tentpole limited series Nine Perfect Strangers, based on Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty’s latest book. Oscar-nominated McCarthy will executive produce alongside Kidman the project, from David E. Kelley, Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories, Kidman’s Blossom Films — all key auspices behind HBO’s hit Big Little Lies adaptation — and Endeavor Content.

Nine Perfect Strangers, based on a 2018 novel by Liane Moriarty. Nine hand-picked people from different walks of life, all desperate to find happiness, put themselves in the hands of a questionable self-help guru Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman). Two health resorts located in Byron Bay, Australia stand-in for Masha's remote California healing retreat, the Tranquillum House. Can our nine guests, through the power of introspection and interaction find a way to work through their issues. Filming in a remote location gave the cast an advantage during the Pandemic since they were already isolated.

Masha Dmitrichenko is hiding a secret, she is receiving anonymous death threats.

Tranquillum House could not function without the staff, Yao is played by Manny Jacinto and Delilah is played by Tiffany Boone.

Regina Hall plays pivotal sweet-as-pie guest Carmel Schneider, who would like to move on after her husband left her for a younger woman and her children no longer rely on her.

Samara Weaving plays gorgeous social media influencer Jessica Chandler who is visiting Tranquillum with her wealthy husband Ben, played by Melvin Gregg, hoping to relight the spark of their marriage.

Melissa McCarthy plays the sarcastic, unsatisfied romance novelist, Frances Welty, who is hiding her cache of libations while feuding with wiseass painkiller addict Tony Hogburn, played by Bobby Cannavale, a former star who hopes that nobody there recognizes who he is.

Luke Evans plays Lars Lee, a well-polished gay man with a vendetta against Masha.

Then there is the Marconi family, the father Napoleon, played by Michael Shannon, who came to Tranquillum House with his wife Heather, played by Asher Keddie, and his daughter Zoe, played by Grace Van Patten.  The family has been grieving for 3 years over the death of Zoe's twin brother, Zach.

Nine Perfect Strangers runs for 8 one-hour episodes, the first 3 episodes are available on August 18th on Hulu, with the rest releasing weekly.

Last year when everyone was in lockdown I remember an interview with her and her husband in Australia.  I am wondering if this is what she was working on at that time.

Is she? I know she's much smaller now than during her Gilmore Girls/Mike & Molly days, but I didn't know she's had a recent weight loss. I remember reading an interview with her years ago where she said that while she's made lifestyle changes for her health, she's happy with her body and is not trying to be thin.

Will the smoothie pops have micro-doses of magic mushrooms in them?

This is a tabloid article saying that she "reportedly" lost 50-75 pounds. Melissa herself doesn't seem to address her weight at all in the InStyle interview. She does look a bit slimmer in the photos, but that could be due to styling, angles, lighting, and airbrushing. She and her husband did an interview with Seth Myers about two weeks ago, and while you can only see her from the shoulders up, he face still looks pretty full.

I’m looking forward to seeing Kidman in Being The Ricardos, portraying Lucille Ball.  I’ve read great things about it.  I sort of laughed when I recalled how her accent was so canned over her role in Strangers. Lol

Nine Perfect Strangers receives a Season 2 on Hulu. Nicole Kidman will return with a new cast which includes Murray Bartlett, Liv Ullman, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Aras Aydin. The retreat will be located in the Swiss Alps.
