I just came across this little bit of info on the Getty museum's blog dedicated to GoT - For the Throne: Mediavalist's Musings on Game of Thrones.  Background info on this episode focused on bestiaries (medieval encyclopedias on animals) and what they had to say about dragons:

Now I'm guessing that all purveyors of elephants in Essos were like 'Nope, not sending any valuable elephants to end up as dragon-fodder. What's wrong with that Lannister lady???'
