BizBuzz June 6, 2014 Share June 6, 2014 The making of a great compilation tape, like breaking up, is hard to do and takes ages longer than it might seem. You gotta kick off with a killer, to grab attention. Then you got to take it up a notch, but you don't wanna blow your wad, so then you got to cool it off a notch. There are a lot of rules. Anyway... I've started to make a tape... in my head... for Laura. Full of stuff she likes. Full of stuff that make her happy. For the first time I can sort of see how that is done. The above is from the movie High Fidelity. Truer words were never spoken. Gone are the days where making compilation tapes were the thing to do. Today, you just type in the search box and up pops a You Tube video. Or you plug in your ear phones and you have 1000's of mp3's you can listen to via shuffle and repeat and never hear the same song in days. I am about to compile a bunch of CD's. For the last 15 or so years, I haven't had a vehicle that had a music playing apparatus except for the radio, and sucky ones at that. I am now the proud owner of a new-to-me car, and gasp, it has a 6 CD changer in it with a BOSE sound system, and I am about to keel over with the possibilities. I am in my car a lot for long trips. For example, I need to do about an 11 hour drive tomorrow and I felt now is the time to put together some awesome compilation CD's. Then I thought, what fun it would be to get some sample compilation lists from some of the awesome people at PTV. I love getting turned on to new-to-me music, and I know I have forgotten more than I remember about in music from the 5+ decades I have been on this earth. So here are the rules, if you feel like joining in: The compilation list needs to have 10-12 songs (enough for a CD) The compilation list needs to have a theme (for example, #1 songs from each year of the 70's) The compilation list needs to include the song title and the artist In keeping with my rules, here is a sample list: Layla - Derek and the Dominos (1970) Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin (1971) Superstition - Stevie Wonder (1972) Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973) No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley and the Wailers (1974) Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen (1975) Hotel California - The Eagles (1976) Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees (1977) I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor (1978) Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 - Pink Floyd (1979) So, who is next? Have fun! 2 Link to comment

Jeebus Cripes June 8, 2014 Share June 8, 2014 High Fidelity is one of my favorite films, and I've also had an almost OCD need to make mixtapes ever since I was a kid. I love this thread! I'll go easy and do "Covers" because it's late, and I need to get my ass to bed. BizBuzz June 8, 2014 Author Share June 8, 2014 Am I the only one that has cleaning house music? I hope not. This is a mix I use when I don't feel much like cleaning, by the end of the mix, I am usually done, and I feel much better. Great upbeat songs, and the BPM keeps you moving. The list up to the last song was put together a long while ago, I just recently added the last one and it seems to round it out. Joy - Soul II Soul Optimistic - Sounds of Blackness Happy - Legacy of Sound featuring Meja Crazy - Alanis Morissette Space Cowboy - Jamiroquai Fake - Simply Red High - Lighthouse Family All Together Now - The Farm Forever Young - Alphville Happy - Pharrell Williams 1 Link to comment

ramble June 9, 2014 Share June 9, 2014 @BizBuzz thanks for the idea of a cleaning mix! I don't know why I've never thought of that, other than not wanting to think of cleaning. I may have to steal some of your song ideas. My playlists are odd emotion based ones, like CryBaby, CrazyMad, QuietCalm or BurningUp. Maybe I can roll one of those into a compilation list... 1 Link to comment
BizBuzz June 9, 2014 Author Share June 9, 2014 You are so welcome @ramble - lists are great. I have to admit they are not as much fun as they used to be when all you had were cassette decks and 45's or albums. ::giggle:: Steal away! I am anxiously awaiting your list of odd emotional based music. Believe it or not, I think a good cry is warranted every once in awhile, and how great would it be to put a time limit of songs on a crying jag? I am allowed to cry until this list is over. ::giggle:: 1 Link to comment

Bort June 19, 2014 Share June 19, 2014 I just can't do CDs anymore. I'm no longer a fan of physical media. I just need my car to have an AUX port where I can plug in an iPod. Which was fine for a while in my mustang but I decided I was putting too many miles on this precious car so I got another one. Sadly, it had no AUX port. So I had the radio replaced with one that had an iPod cord attachment. But I digress. I love making playlists. Themes. Sometimes it's easy, sometimes I come up with one that's very daunting. These are some examples: Acoustic Classic Country Cover songs Songs about Sex - got the idea for this one from Pitch Perfect Fresh - these are songs that are new. I only keep 30 songs at a time in this list. If I put new ones in, old ones get booted Slow and boring - I came up with this one when I was flying back and forth to the UK a lot this winter. I needed songs with very slow tempos that I could sleep through. Weirdly, classical music had too many exciting interludes, it kept waking me up Summer - I go to the beach a lot, so this is my playlist for when I'm sitting out there States - this one took a long time, finding at least one song for each of the 50 United States. There were some states that were REALLY hard to find, let me tell you... And some that were super easy. Lots of songs about southern states. Sucky Songs I Like - this was requested from another thread. It's songs that are traditionally silly, stupid, but I like 'em anyway. (listed below) All My Life - K-Ci & JoJoAs Long as You Love Me - Backstreet Boys Can't Fight the Moonlight - Leann Rimes The Climb - Miley Cyrus Dirrty - Christina Aguilera Straight Up - Paula Abdul The Sign - Ace of Base Stayin' Alive - BeeGees Waiting for a Star to Fall - Boy Meets Girl Breathless - The Corrs Kissin' U - Miranda Cosgrove Big Girls Don't Cry - Fergie Mmm'Bop - Hanson This Kiss - Faith Hill Yoo Hoo - Imperial Teen Jump - Kriss Kross Magic - Olivia Newton John Bye Bye Bye - *NSync Step by Step - New Kids on the Block Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-a-lot SOS (Let the Music Play) - Jordin Sparks Wannabe - Spice Girls Hey Now Now - Swirl 360 I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany Ice Ice Baby - Vanilla Ice Hold On - Wilson Phillips What Makes You Beautiful - One Direction Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen Whoo, this post ended up being long... 3 Link to comment

SrPab August 5, 2014 Share August 5, 2014 (edited) I'm going to "cover" Jeebus Cripes' idea above and also post a compilation list of cover songs--with an a cappella twist: Aca-awesome Cover-age Daft Punk - Pentatonix [Daft Punk medley cover] Turn Up The Music* - Peter Hollens ft. Scott Hoying of Pentatonix [Chris Brown cover] Sing - The Funx [Ed Sheeran cover] Rock With You - Duwende [Michael Jackson cover] Sweet Life - Level [Frank Ocean cover] Suit & Tie - VoicePlay [Justin Timberlake cover] Diamonds - Quinta.5 [Rihanna cover] The Way - The Filharmonic [Ariana Grande cover] Closer - Switch [Ne-Yo cover] Climax - Feedback [usher cover] Locked Out Of Heaven - Tale Of Voices [bruno Mars cover] Ordinary People - Six Appeal [John Legend cover] Bonus track: Under Pressure - Jazzappella [Queen/David Bowie cover; live] *Peter Hollens is a one-man a cappella music-maker. Most of his output (either solo efforts or collaborations with other vocalists) have the vocals digitally processed (oversampled, distorted, what have you), but it is still a human voice producing the sounds. LiberryLady August 18, 2014 Share August 18, 2014 Pick up the Pieces! Uh huh! And yes, there should definitely be some BTO. There are so many awesome seventies songs!!! The only trouble I had was that the list ended up being kinda a sausage-fest. If you look at the Billboard list, year-by-year, it's pretty dude-heavy. There were some awesome ladies of soul and/or rhythm and blues, but for pop songs? There was Olivia Newton John... Tennille of Captain and Tennille... and Cher? Not a lot to choose from. 1 Link to comment
BizBuzz August 18, 2014 Author Share August 18, 2014 OOO, I love a challenge @ LiberryLady , and if I had time tonight, I would be making a Compilation List of just women of the 70's music... LiberryLady August 18, 2014 Share August 18, 2014 Ooooo... I LOVE When Will I See You Again by the Three Degrees! That would work perfectly, too, since it hasn't been heard much since the seventies. 1 Link to comment
Shannon L. August 18, 2014 Share August 18, 2014 Great suggestions so far! Here is my, somewhat eclectic, list: Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson I Feel the Earth Move by Carole King Lean on Me by Bill Withers Rock Me Gently by Andy Kim Kung Foo Fighting by Carl Davis Jive Talkin' by the Beegees Boogie Shoes by KC and the Sunshine Band Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann My Sharona by The Knack I'd also like to hear some of the first couple couple of minutes of Papa Was a Rollin' Stone by the Temptations. Just the instrumental part. 3 Link to comment
