S04.E12: Señor Clean

I thought it was funny that Karl's legs were intact, while the rest of his was just a literal bag of crap in separate caskets.

Essentially, Tandy has been improving, as gradually as it's been happening, it's everyone else that's starting to get crazier. But Tandy's still gonna be Tandy. I don't even know what's going on anymore.

Also, the reveal of Tandy's entire back side splattered with blood, and then him singing "Amazing Grace" at the funeral ("... that saved a wretch like him ... and him..."). xD

According to EP Phil Lord, the show's concept from the beginning was that Phil/Tandy needed the world as we know it to end before he could eventually start becoming his best self; and I feel like this episode was the first in a long time (perhaps since the first half of s.2, or possibly his talk to God in 3x11) to directly address that. Even so, I kinda figured Tandy getting along with Gail was probably too good to last -- his motivation for impressing her (she gave him a bit of praise for once, and he wanted more) was on the selfish side to begin with, so it shouldn't have been too surprising that he would somehow screw it up rather quickly (by assuming a less-than-wholesome motive on her part -- all the more galling considering that she's married to Erica). :p

Still liking Melissa's bond with Jasper, though I had to feel a little bad for Todd -- he's the one who wants the kid, but can't seem to do anything right as a parent. :\ It could be interesting to see what happens with their plan to have Todd impregnate Erica (just so he can have a biological child)...

Tandy was actually tolerable this episode.  Finally.
But you know it won't last.

One minor problem about Tandy's bloody shirt -- at the end of the last episode after the explosion, Tandy had no blood on the back of his shirt.
There wasn't even any spatter, and in this episode that shirt was soaked in blood.

I thought it was funnier that Todd was singing 'Hungry Eyes' at the funeral, probably because Karl was a cannibal.

Are Todd and Melissa going to ask Erica to be their surrogate ?  Which is just a terrible idea.

So I guess that answers the question of whether or not Karl was actually killed!

This was frustrating because Tandy is such a tool but at the same time it annoys me how everyone (except Carol, usually) treats him. So it was nice to see Gail apologize for once and acknowledge Tandy isn't all bad, only to have him turn into a jerk again at the end.

That was great. So completely unexpected. Gross and hilarious.

Hungry Eyes was a good song choice.

Seeing Melissa interact with Jaspar was very sweet.

You know, I wouldn't put it past Tandy to have deliberately slathered his shirt, etc. in blood and guts because he thought it would make his story about the accidental gun-discharge seem more believable to the rest of the group. :D (If that was indeed the case, then apparently it worked because it got them to "take [his] word for it" when he offered to show them the "Thanksgiving toilet after turkey recall" mess he'd been describing; otherwise, they probably might have been able to guess that Karl wasn't actually shot.)

RE: the back of the shirt reveal...  I just rewatched the last few seconds of Hamilton/Berg, and yep, Tandy's shirt was clean.  So was the rest of the room - no blood spatter inside the house, just on the patio.  They could have easily shot this last scene so you didn't see his shirt or the floor/lamp/walls, so I don't think it was a deliberate error.  Could be that it was an added sight gag when shooting the next episode, something they didn't think of at the time the explosion was filmed.  This is not a show I expect to be perfect in these types of things (otherwise, the entire room would have had to been soaked in blood for his shirt & back of legs to be that saturated), so it doesn't really bother me much.  I'm more bugged by Jasper living in the woods but looks pretty darn clean in his scenes with Melissa.
