Ser Jorah Mormont: Knight Of The Perpetual Friendzone

I mentioned elsewhere that Jorah might go join whatever sellswords Stannis is gathering with his Bank of Braavos loan. That would be cool. Just the idea of Jorah back in Westeros is pretty cool. No more Three Dragon-Warriors for the Queen, though. I loved the scene last season where Jorah, Grey Worm, and Old!Daario kicked ass in the Yunkai, each with their different fighting techniques. [sigh]

Hmmm.  I have no recollection of anything called the "Golden Company" either recently or in previous seasons. Could you remind me where it was mentioned?

I'm not certain that joining Stannis would be a good idea for Jorah.  First, I don't think he is all that interested in fighting on behalf of anyone but Dany, he is not, naturally, an altruistic man, nor do I see him as a sellsword type. JMHO.  (BTW this is the second woman who he as lost because of a bad decision on his part - the 1st of course being his wife and decision to sell his poachers into slavery.)

Further to the selling slaves part, I can't help but think that Stannis - who would know that Jorah had been condemned for being a slaver - wouldn't accept his brother's pardon of Jorah without meting out some kind of other, more appropriate, punishment for the illigal activity he was guilty of (see Davos, The Onion Knight).  That's the way Stannis rolls.

I don't recall the name specifically, anothermi, but the sellswords Jorah worked for were mentioned by Dany, last week, when Jorah talked about Daario being a sellsword/mercenary and therefore untrustworthy (I am paraphrasing a lot) and Dany says (again, paraphrase)  "You fought for the ______ (whatever group of Swellswords, presumably the Golden Company) before going to work for my brother."

Basically it got mentioned when Dany pulled a "C'mon now, you were a swellsword too there, Cowboy." thing when Jorah objected to Dany having a fling with Daario.

Poor Jorah.  He's not even Friend Zone material anymore.  I would like to see him turn up again, and I think the Golden Company might be just the ticket, especially if he hasn't had the opportunity to stash away some gold.  I don't know that Stannis' scrutiny would extend to the members of the mercenaries he hires to fight on his behalf.  If he were to judge sellswords as harshly as he judges his followers, he wouldn't have any fighting force.  He would undermine his entire purpose in seeking funds from the Iron Bank.  And yet, he does seem that inflexible.  Lol.  It's tough to get much accomplished when your world is as black and white as Stannis'.

But I do hope to see Jorah return to Westeros, and possibly fight at the Wall.  Imagine him meeting Jon Snow, who has the sword that was once Jorah's birthright.  Maybe he could redeem himself, although this show doesn't leave much opportunity for redemption.

Ooh, I thought Davos said 'something something Golden Company' Stannis replied with a sneering 'they're sell-swords', and Davos points out that they have never broken a contract and that armies win wars, not magic. But Anothermi is probably right - Stannis would have one of Jorah's hands for selling slaves.

I guess Jorah could head back to Qarth and see if the Tile Face Lady is still about and what she has under that mask, or...? It is actually *really* hard for me to think of Jorah's story w/o Dany at it's center. Damn. I thought he was more likely to betray her by thinking he was "protecting" Dany, but nope; pigeons, roosts, etc.

What now for Jorah the Andal? He is from The North (I assume since Ned sentenced him to death), so I guess he could get pulled somehow into the fight to keep the Free Folk out (if there is even time for that), or against the WWs? He needs someone with a strong moral compass to latch onto. Stannis is probably not forgiving enough to welcome a former slaver into his circle. Who else? Assuming he doesn't just follow along in Dany's periphery, hoping for a ticket on his own Redemption Train.

Yeah, Stannis would just start lopping off Jorah parts, god knows which ones.  If not for slaving, then for spying, or for working with Viserys or fighting for Dany.  I'm really harsh on Stannis, because I don't find him interesting, but the only person he's ever seemed to hesitate towards in terms of doling out whatever rule-book-dictated punishment fits the rigidly defined moment, was Davos...and both old gods, new ones, red ones or ones that are allegedly all about the Light know that he really, really ought to hesitate when it comes to Davos.  Stannis even seems to know that in some stunted area of his callous heart.

So for Jorah....a man for whom he would harbor no known fondness....I'm thinking Jorah had best steer clear of wherever Stannis may roam.

Maybe The Wall is the best bet for Jorah?  It's not like he can pop into King's Landing and claim loyalty.  Despite the pardon from Robert, he's just spent years fighting for and with Dany...and they know he did.

Braavos might be a good bet.  Or maybe Jorah will sail off to Dorne?

IDK, if Jorah was allowed to leave with a copy of that pardon, that MIGHT suffice for Stannis - the law is the law, and a royal pardon a royal pardon (and by a non bastard King no less!)

OOOOOH I'd love to see him meet up with Mysterious Lady from Qarth again because if not, what the heck was she even there for? Since she was the one who seemingly knew about his betrayal, it would be fitting.

ALSO yes he needs to meet up with Jon Snow and see Chekhov's Mormont Family Sword.

WOOHOOO now I am excited to find out what Wandering Jorah gets up to, assuming that isn't just the last we ever see of him...

Huh? What sword? I thought Jon had a sword that Ned gave him, why would he have Mormon's sword?

Shimpy, the Jorah thing happened exactly like you said it would! I also think if Jorah had been up front to Dany before, she would have reacted differently. She had already forgave him for selling slaves, which in her book it's the most horrible crime ever, so there. So the betrayal is more about finding out from someone else too late.

Jon was gifted Mormont's sword. The cool one with the white wolf on the handle. He went back to the dining hall and all the guys were fawning over it (S01). This was after Jon befriended most of the Night's Watch, but before the group headed north to find Benjen.

ChocButterfly, maybe Benjen was your Memory Keeper on that one.  We know he's essentially vanished from existence, so that would explain that.

But yes, Lord Commander Mormont gave Jon his sword...and it was before we were sure that LC Mormont was Jorah's father.  That pretty much confirmed, "Oh! So I guess he's Jorah's dad? Giving away the family sword?  So....I guess he's Jorah's really Disappointed Dad?"

I think a Bear (is that right?) is carved on the hilt.  Might have been a wolf.  Either way, Jon Snow has Jorah Mormont's family sword.  I sort of hope that's a detail that someday plays out in some way.

Given the story at The Wall, it's likely to play out in the "Hey, is that baby skewered on the Mormont Family Sword? Hey...*nudge*nudge* wake up! The Thenns are eating people...yes, again...pay attention would you?  And they're skewering babies with a sword that looks familiar.  Stop mumbling and look! No? Oh..no, sometimes I don't know why we watch this show either...but look at the sword, would you?"

Shimpy, the Jorah thing happened exactly like you said it would!

Hooray.  I finally guessed one right.  Yippee.  Apparently I used up my one-right-a-season on Jorah.  Sorry Oberyn.  Maybe in an AU I got your story right and instead of banishing Jorah, Dany forgave him and they ran away together?"

That would make the show 1000% more awesome.
