Postcards from the End (of Civilization): the Spoiler Topic

Recommended Posts

Possible spoiler  based on casting news from tvline:

* Boris Kodjoe (The Last Man on Earth) is set to join Code Black in the recurring role of Dr. Will Campbell, a suave but arrogant surgeon who ends up competing with Raza Jaffrey’s Dr. Hudson. He will first appear on the Feb. 3 episode (which would seem to foretell the fate of his Last Man character, who was last seen flatlining in the fall finale).

God, that next episode sounds good. :) I wonder, though, if there was reason the writers decided to go back and cover that stuff now -- other than possibly as a stalling tactic so we have to wait a whole ep to find out Gail's fate (kinda like how, last season, we had to follow Mike's return to Earth and the beginning of his journey to Tucson before we could see the Malibu gang again)...

Anyway, some fall-finale post-mortems to tide us over until the spring premiere:

THR: Will Forte interview

THR: Mary Steenburgen interview

EW: MS Q&A

The next episode after the spring premiere:

"The Spirit of St. Lewis" (3x11)

I see Gail is still listed in the cast, but not mentioned in the synopsis...

I imagine there's only one person that title could be referring to. (Also, neither the titles or the summaries have revealed anything about Gail's fate! How frustrating! Well not really but you know.)

I'm looking reaaaaally forward to this one, as I'm (what appears to be) the lone person who likes Melissa.

I thought she was decent as the "straight woman" in s.1 and most of s.2, but I think she's been killing it in s.3, and these next two episodes after the mid-season premiere definitely sound promising in terms of her development as a character. :)

Did the showrunner who usually tweets out cryptic 1-word/phrase summaries for each episode do that for this spring yet?

Oh man, I'd forgotten about that -- I'll have to start keeping an eye out on Andy's Twitter feed...

Welp, she did, but Lewis did not. :(

Programming note: This Sunday's episode, "Point Person Knows Best" (3x14), better be a good 'un, 'cause we're in for two weeks of reruns after that...

http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch/last-man-on-earth/listings/

5/7/17 (Su.) 9:00 PM FOX (LME-316/17) One-Hour Season Finale

4/30/17 (Su.) 9:30 PM FOX (LME-315) Episode 16

4/23/17 (Su.) 9:30 PM FOX (LME-314) Episode 15 Name 20 Picnics... Now!

4/16/17 (Su.) 9:30 PM FOX (LME-304) Five Hoda Kotbs (R) (LME-310) The Spirit of St. Lewis (R) -- Easter Sunday, which the FOX shows have usually taken off (even when the other networks still show new stuff)

4/9/17 (Su.) 9:30 PM FOX (LME-303) You're All Going to Diet (R) (LME-318) Got Milk? (R) -- Palm Sunday; since they're not airing a special (like they did with that Tyler Perry "The Passion" thing last year), I'm guessing this was so LMOE could have two episodes to air in its last week (see above)

4/2/17 (Su.) 9:30 PM FOX (LME-313) Point Person Knows Best -- oof, this one's going up against both 'The Walking Dead' s.7 finale and the Academy of Country Music awards :(

Yup. :\

Hopefully, this episode will be worth the wait:

"Name 20 Picnics... Now!" (3x15) (press release)

It's supposed to touch on the Tandy/Todd bro-mance, which they haven't really dealt with since near the end of s.2 (when Todd was getting jealous over losing his "bacon brother" to Tandy's real brother), unless you count Tandy's efforts to assuage Todd's guilt in "The Wild Guess Express" (3x2)...

That would be an interesting wrinkle -- maybe if it had to do with her treatment / recovery and the gang having to deal with any repercussions from her odd behavior throughout the season so far...

But to be honest, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it had something to do with Tandy bonding / feeling a kinship with whoever the new group member turns out to be -- the same thing happened last season (in 2x16, "Falling Slowly" and 2x17, "Smart & Stupid") when Tandy and Mike had healed their rift and were getting along again. (Of course, this season Tandy sparked up a friendship with Lewis, but Todd was pretty much wrapped up in Melissa's mental problems the whole time.)

Speaking of which, in this Sunday's episode Carol is supposed to be become suspicious of Todd's behavior; the last time that happened was in 2x12 ("Valhalla"), when she knew he was sneaking around with both Gail and Melissa, so I suspect something similar might happen now (in seeking Melissa's treatment, Todd and Gail did seem to do some serious bonding...).

Ohhh, I think you've cracked it there. Especially since if whoever it is does turn out to be a child (which is about 99% likely at this point) nothing can drive a rift inbetween adults like suddenly having to take care of a child. Because no-one ever agrees on the details of childrearing.

(Also - now that you bring it up - the more I think about it, the Lewis/Tandy relationship seemed to differ from the Todd/Tandy relationship in a way. Like, Todd is Tandy's best friend absolutely, but with Lewis it was almost like he was looking for a mentor, sometimes. Or that's the feeling I got, every now and again...)

Good observation. :) They did have some terrific bonding moments (most notably in 3x6, "The Open-Ended Nature of Unwitnessed Deaths"), but for the most part their relationship struck me more as a mild variation on Tandy's admiration for Mike and Phil 2.

I'm just surprised Tandy isn't trying to abandon Erica at the end of a long road so that Jasper will choose him.

Eh, that's Season 1 Phil/Tandy stuff; I would think Tandy's moved way past that by now. :\

One more thought on Tandy and Todd's upcoming conflict in 3x15: It could possibly have something to do with Erica needing a father figure for Jasper -- like the plot in "Valhalla" (2x12), in which she chose Todd to be a father figure for her impending baby after Phil 2 died, based on Phil 2's dying wish of "don't let Tandy raise our baby." As I recall, Tandy got upset about that and tried a few tricks to make Phil 2 look bad (planting pills, porn magazines, etc. in his old room) so she'd be less inclined to respect his wish; she wasn't having any of it, but later when Tandy was on the beach burning a bunch of Phil 2's things, he and Erica seemed to make peace as she gently told him to let it go and then helped him give Phil 2 a proper burial.

As for Tandy getting into a clash with Gail in 3x16, I wonder whether it might have something to do whatever the fallout from the Tandy/Todd clash happens to be... In any event, I could see Carol getting involved if she's forced to decide between her husband's happiness and what other members of the group might consider more fair. :\

Yeah, unless it has to do with something happening to their self-sustaining office building (an electrical short, a wildfire, it gets crushed by a meteor or falling space junk, etc.), I'm not gonna try to guess. :D

It seems like we will be pretty happy with the ending, with something crazy happening in the middle of the hour.

Interesting. Wonder what could happen to drive a wedge between them? Something to do with Melissa?

I was a little off (it had to do with her treatment causing her current odd behavior, especially Tandy's misplaced concern for Jasper possibly being traumatized by what he sees), but you called it. :)

And it looks like you called that one! :)

I really hope the showrunners aren't as cruel as to end Carol's pregnancy, or reveal it was never really there at all. Maybe Carol's current uncertainty is gonna be a kicking-off point for this upcoming Tandy-Gail feud?

Yup. :) Even if the piece that fell wasn't anywhere near the survivors' office building and it wasn't part of the International Space Station, I think it was just a bit of foreshadowing of what's in store for the finale (hence, "the long-term consequences of surviving an apocalypse"). Without anybody on Earth to control or guide the satellites (or the ISS, for that matter -- I get the feeling a chunk of that is what's actually going to threaten the gang or crush their home...), orbital decay sets in after a few years or so...

Oh man, I hope they don't go that route with Carol. :( S.2 had a couple of poignant moments where they addressed both her and Tandy's fears about infertility (she in 2x7 "Baby Steps," he in 2x13 "Fish in the Dish"), only for God / the universe to sort of "reward" him (in 2x16 "Falling Slowly") for finally telling her he loved her by having her discover her pregnancy the next day; I'm not sure how much more jerking around I could take, there... (unless Carol's baby-bump finally begins to show after Tandy has another epiphany / "come-to-Jesus" moment regarding their marriage...)

As for the Tandy-Gail feud, I got the impression he's been assuming a leadership role in the group, and she's finally questioning it and/or standing up to him (a far cry from earlier in the season, when she was about ready to leave the group -- but then her ordeal in the elevator has since made her more appreciative of the other survivors). Of course, I could see Carol's pregnancy fears playing a part in it, if Gail thinks Tandy should focus more on caring for his worried wife than being the center of attention (similar to how she recently called out Carol for nosing in on her and Todd's business instead of doing more to help Tandy with Jasper).

Actually! To reassure us all, I was glancing through the Digital Spy interview/recaps thingys and they do mention in there stuff like "Tandy's about to become a father" which I don't think they would do if he....wasn't. So hopefully it's all just a red herring of sorts.

Oh gosh, I think you're right about the ISS, because - that was Mike's thing, Mike lived there, how more heartbreaking can you get than to have a symbol of your (almost certainly) dead brother's achievements and talents suddenly threaten your whole existence, just as you've accepted his absence and are moving on? I really hope you're right about that. It would make so much sense.

Bonus points if any of the stuff Mike left up there (that constantly reappearing Miller family photo for example) somehow survives the crash and Tandy finds it.
