Ptxnewsandstuff just tweeted this great article from Billboard:

Why Pentatonix? How the A Cappella Group Became--and Stayed--Charts Conquerors

Although they miss the whole YouTube aspect of their popular growth.

Missing YouTube's role sounds like either idiocy, or a deliberate editorial slant to knock down new media.

Click through PTX Librarian's tweet to read this Mitch-centric article.

One big takeaway, for me, is the sense that the writer of the piece, Max Berlinger, believes PTX to be a pop group first and foremost. He *acknowledges* PTX as an a cappella group, but the way the article reads makes me think there might now be lots of people who consider PTX a pop group...that just happens to make a cappella music. They are regarded as an established part of the music scene, as opposed to a weird flash-in-the-pan novelty act.

Perhaps Mitch's fashion choices/philosophy tie into his social anxiety: “I don’t really know why, but I’ve been into that ‘don’t talk to me’ look. I like to be approachable but I also like … I like to keep people at arm’s length.” His clothes do the talking when he's not feeling chatty.

Hollywood Bowl Concert update: I went down a Twitter rabbit hole a few hours ago and somehow came across a tidbit that mentioned PTX (accompanied by the A Cappella Academy Choir, L.A. Philharmonic, and Army Band) will close the July 2 concert with a performance of Bohemian Rhapsody. Further sleuthing got me verification from one of the Academy's campers having an FB post with a screenshot of the ACA email describing the change. The ACA Choir will only be at the July 2 event.

I think they'll perform BR instead of New Year's Day.

Ben Bram weighs in...

I'm not sure what to make of it, though. Does PTX already have a new bass (still grooming this person and/or waiting for the right time to unleash), or is this just confirmation that PTX will start searching for a new bass in September? Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic about Pentatonix 2.0/PTX Mark II.

By cautiously optimistic, I mean: I'll give the new person a fair shake, but until/unless he (and I assume the bass will be a "he") performs something from PTX Vol. IV, or something older, like, Telephone or LITH...I don't know how I'll feel about it. But I know that I won't let nostalgia and the goodwill Avi had built up with me over the years to negatively color my impression of the new guy--at least, that's what I'll keep telling myself to make it true.

Additionally (putting on a more impartial/pseudo-scientific hat), we'll get real-time info/empirical evidence on the vitality and resilience of the PTX brand. I'm 95% confident that this transition will go well and that PTX 2.0 will be successful--accounting for lots of differing opinions regarding the contextual definition of "successful". Will PTX alter their definition of success? Will I adjust my notions of what success for PTX means?

Will they still release an LP of original music later this year--if so, will every track have the new bass? Does their next album chart highly on Billboard/go Gold? My notions of success for this group encompass more than just quantifiable things like album sales and award noms. But their music doing well in the marketplace speaks to the strength of their brand since their brand has a commercial component.

My 77-year-old dad likes PTX's more traditional work. I have bought all of their Christmas CDs for him, and when I took him out for his b-day dinner today, I played "Can't Help Falling in Love," "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," and "Jolene" in the car and he asked me to put together a cd of their more classic and more harmonious songs.

I've struggled to keep this in but I have to say that when I heard/saw the cover of Bohemian Rhapsody I got the Star Wars "bad feeling about this" because (and this just may be my limited view) I thought once they absolutely killed that, where do you go from there?

I know that they all have tons of original material inside of them yet unborn which will be killer (I still love Baddest Girl and Love Again), but I didn't feel that sense of upward trajectory that had always been a part of my Pentatonix experience.  I had that feeling but in no way thought it would be Avi either taking a step back or a hiatus if you credit Kevin's statement.

So now for speculation, is it going to be a complete break (I know Kevin performed on Field and Pier) or will he still collab on arrangements but not perform? I cannot imagine a new bass (although that would make the most sense) because their synergy/BLEND was so unique and from the  first moment I heard those glorious and intricate harmonies created by the six of them and performed by the five of them.........it just scratched that musical itch that had only partially been satisfied until them.

Avi completely detaching himself from PTX?

Here's what I've come across: a tweet from Ben Bram indicating that PTX will get a new bass (with a further implication that the PTX brand is of a quintet built on a rhythm section with a dedicated bass vocalist). Further, I skulk on any number of public FB profiles of a cappella folk and I have come across one explicitly saying he was given a shot at auditioning for PTX but didn't make the cut (he even posted a picture of the rejection letter/email).

They still have another album of original music coming out...but maybe not released this year. Will this album have Avi on it at all? Had they already put down a few tracks with Avi, and subsequently had to set those aside because they want to re-record them with a new bass--I don't know?

Also, I think Kirstin's wedding is in November of this year. Q4 2017 may be light on PTX public performances/touring even if nothing else was going on.

Select PTX performances at the July 2 Hollywood Bowl appearance. From what I can tell, not too many YT uploads so far. I was not expecting Coldest Winter on their set list. The orchestra drowns out Kevin and Avi often (and the trio every once in awhile, too!), but that's par for the course whenever they have orchestral backing.

Take On Me (I think this is their first public performance of this song)

Bohemian Rhapsody (with ACA Choir). First public performance of this song?

Coldest Winter (first public performance of this song?)

Imagine

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (I think what would count as their first public performance of this song was when they performed it during their Saturday, July 1, visit at A Cappella Academy)

Can't Help Falling In Love

I love that new vid for Bad 4 Us! Very Soul Train.

My fave song on the EP is Worth It (Perfect). Such a smooth and subtle beat, and Mitch is nailing the high notes, and I am always disappointed when it ends. But I really like both Bad 4 Us and Imaginary Parties. Today is a gorgeous day outside, and I was driving to my hair salon with the windows down and the EP blaring out. Fun!

I've listened to Kirstin's EP. It's good, but I'll confess that I enjoy Superfruit's Future Friends EP more. I'm surprised that she doesn't have a new video out today, but the boys are releasing their third one off their EP--Worth It (Perfect), which I am looking forward to seeing because it's my favorite track.

ETA: Worth .it (Perfect) just posted! And it is just that--the dancers are amazing.

Dancing On My Own got more than 1M views on YT in less than 24 hrs. But, as usual, YT comment sections are a cesspool. I haven't read any myself but there are tweets bemoaning the usual suspects known as "stupidity" and "ignorance" and "rudeness". The Like/Dislike ratio, so far, is outstanding--which is a better barometer for me to know how well-received it is.

Will they put out another music vid next month with just the four remaining members?
