The Meredith Vieira Show - General Discussion

Today for me the panel talked about Charlie Sheen's interview on The Today Show. I think I may be a day behind everybody. Meredith lets everyone talk and it isn't rushed and nobody jokes around when the subject matter is serious. Love this new format this year.

The best moderator The View ever had. She also was very good on The Today Show and 60 Minutes.

She's from Rhode Island and vacations on Cape Cod. A former coworker of mine had a family cottage on the Cape and used to see Meredith out and about in the bakery or stores. I forget the name of the town. Meredith is very down to earth and friendly. No diva here folks.

Meredith Vieira really is a great moderator. Whenever one of the panelists are giving an off opinion, she usually navigates around their position for them to explain themselves better. Such as the other day when Lance was calling the man who was angry over Caitlyn Jenner transphobic, she tried to ask him that if the person hadn't called Caitlyn a "man," would he then understand why someone might not think Caitlyn Jenner is the most worthy candidate out there?

She does a good job keeping the discussions from going off the rails into screaming matches. It's too bad she'd probably never consider returning to The View, since the show would be elevated instantly with her there.

I haven't seen today's episode yet (it airs twice, and I more often catch the second airing), but it's great to have a place to talk about the show.

The odd thing is I don't know the panelists by name outside of Meredith and Lance. Lance and the comic are the weakest links for me, but I definitely like the other two ladies. I enjoy how those two usually have complex reactions to topics, not necessarily cut down the middle of conservative/liberal like you usually see on these shows.

I thought they sort of missed the point with Aguilera's comments. No, it's not realistic to expect parents to always get along, but you can wait to disagree outside the hearing of children (if you want to try). I don't think it's good to argue in front of kids only because they'll end up taking one parent's side over the other.

Meredith is so much better off with her own show than the crap going on at The View. They should be so lucky to have her back there. I read somewhere that after Meredith left The View she was told by one of the producers "What will you do now, are you sure you want to leave." Well, whoever said that either is sorry she is still there or maybe the one who was fired and is suing Rosie O right now.

I remember one week when Lilliana (the brunette) was switched spots with Lance for some reason, she and Yamaneika ended up getting into big arguments and Meredith could barely get a word in to go to break. Then Lilliana was moved back beside Meredith soon after. I think they were trying to bring her out of her shell because before that, she usually didn't speak very much. And then suddenly Yamaneika didn't talk quite as loud anymore either, although she still dominates occasionally.

So whoever's actually running the show gives feedback to the co-hosts out of respect for the viewers. How unusual!

We've been a day behind where I live since last week when the station here that airs the show aired Monday's episode on Tuesday too. So Timbaland was on and the commercials they air for the show had him advertised as the guest. I think most other people saw Dennis Quaid as the main guest today. That's who supposed to be on today Thursday according to the site. I called about it yesterday and am waiting for a call back from the station here concerning it all.

Darn! We get a forum for Meredith's show and some of us are a day behind. What luck.

I know. It's pissing me off. I want to see the same day episodes again!

I complained to the corporate office of the company that owns the FOX/NBC station here that airs the show because the programming director acted annoyed when I wrote one time asking why they were airing an episode of a daytime show on a Friday from the Friday a week before. I told this to the lady at the corporate offices and she told me the reply I got about the WW incident saying that they had received a bad copy of the show that day may no sense. I also told her I was calling her because this was the 2nd time in the last few weeks that old episodes of a show that airs in the daytime hours has been screwed up and in this case it's been more then a week. The lady I spoke to said she'd call the local affiliate I mentioned at the start of this post so she could speak with the station manager and  I missed his call to me today because I had the phone turned down so my Mom could nap so I'll call him back tomorrow.

I wouldn't be so mad if I didn't pay to watch television only to have this idiotic stuff going on. We lost the ABC/CBS/NBC stations from the nearest big city that we used to have along with these local ones because I guess it was cheaper for Uverse to just provide the local locals. This one I'm having trouble with is the FOX/NBC/CW affiliate but the CW they broadcast is only available through the cable company and not AT&T's Uverse so we do get The CW station from the nearest big city. The other station that's been here a lot longer not just our ABC affiliate which it has been for years but they are now the local CBS affiliate too. It's frustrating having so many networks divided between two stations. The FOX/NBC one is a high powered station so you can't even pick it up for free OTA.

Yay! Thanks to whoever had this topic started. I enjoy What's Hot Now. I agree about Yamaneika - sometimes I think she is playing a role. When she talks from the heart I enjoy her more. I don't like the game,Es but that is what the FF is for.

WHY is Meredith the only panelist over age 40 (or so?)  And why do Liliana & the blonde (to a slightly lesser degree) appear so damn thin next to Meredith (who's very slim herself?)  No Baby Boomers wanted - wrong demographic, apparently.  (Not sure about Yamaneika -  but she plays the apparently obligatory Sassy Black Woman.)  Disappointed in Meredith re the age make-up of this group, only because a little wisdom & broader perspective MAY come with age.  AND Meredith's let down her side (the over 50's!  Go, Geezers!!)

Just have to wonder what demographic they are trying to get.  Maybe Meredith represents the viewers in her age group.  I think the panel is relatively thoughtful in their responses even though Lilliana talks too fast.  She seems sincere.  I think Yamaneika has some work to do. Sassy Black woman is fine.  Just be real about it.  I like Meredith so much and how she controls a panel that I can mostly enjoy What's Hot Now.

I actually find myself laughing during this show. When they were talking about pictures people send of their genitals, I died at Meredith defending the fact that she looks rather than just deletes. "I am a journalist."  Yamaneika leaning into the camera shot of Megan speaking, with, "And that is not a British accent." LOL

As a casual viewer who tunes in when I remember to, I have a few things I have been dying to say about this show --

1.) Who dresses poor Meredith?   Because that person should be fired immediately.  Meredith's wardrobe is terrible.  TERR-IBLE.  She deserves much better.

2.) Lance Bass pronounces the word also as alt-so.  Drives me bonkers.  (2 other people who altso do this are CNN's Sanjay Gupta and Marco Rubio.)

3.) The chair dancing; along with the drumming on the table with her hands and/or note cards as the band plays them into or out of commercial breaks by dear Meredith gives me second-hand embarrassment for her every single time she does it.   It's so horribly forced and awkward looking --- 'Hey lookie here!  I am just grooving along to this great band that we have here!  Rata -tat -tat!'

Sorry for bringing the negative but I have been dying to get these things off my chest!  And in spite of my gripes I really actually do enjoy watching this show.  I only tuned in once last year before they revamped it and it was the day that she was interviewing the actor Adam Brody and it was just awful.  Very awkward and uncomfortable.  I enjoy this new format much better --- when I remember to actually tune in.  As a View watcher who never missed a day when she was on, I get nostalgic when she talks about Richard, Gabe, Ben & Lily.  I can't believe the children are all grown up now.  I remember watching Ben (maybe it was Gabe) doing his little movie review segments on the View back when he was just a wee little one.  I am always happy to hear about her lovely family.

Yes, they all come across try-hard when they move with the music, but that’s all I could co-sign. I suspect they’re told to do it to give the impression of liveliness.

It was nice to see Joy and Meredith together although they didn’t talk about much.

Apparently the local station here isn't the only one a day behind. Two weeks this has been going on and the station manager said they are going to do a test this Friday to see if they can fix the issue. Something about how they receive the feed or something. He seemed annoyed that I called the corp office of the company that owns the station. I wouldn't have done that if the programming director there hadn't been so snippy when I sent an email just to ask what was going on and why they were a day behind. Can't believe this is going to take over 2 weeks to fix. Guess I'll see Joy's appearance tomorrow. I'm looking forward to when I can discuss the same episode everyone else is seeing on the same day. Feel silly mentioning something from a day before or in this case from Friday.

Don’t worry about posting about previous episodes, Jaded, that’s the good thing about it being an all-episode topic. :)

I agreed with Lilliana v. the others in regards to kids moving out. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with supporting your child as long as they’re not just being lazy. I mean, even with a job, most people can’t make it these days—having a roommate or spouse is almost required. Besides, it’s definitely a cultural thing to see something wrong with an adult staying at home. Sometimes whole families live with their parents, and there’s not anything necessarily wrong with it as long as everyone is contributing. Meredith said she looked forward to moving out, and I’m sure there are many people that would agree with her that just aren't financially able to leave. You need a job and a car to do that.

Today was the day for my station to show Joy on Meredith's show. I'm glad when she joked that she cried when Meredith left because Rosie O'Donnell was coming on the show she did say she loved Rosie too but not as much as Meredith. I guess I'm over Rosie being the butt of jokes and comments like Trump has done.

But, when Meredith came back from commercial I missed part of Joy talking about her new show. The picture froze up. It's been happening with the cable lately when it is unusually windy outside. Damn Time Warner. I think I will call and complain the next time it happens even though I really hate their so-called customer service dept.

What did Joy say before Meredith said "marble." Were they discussing Joy's kitchen? Did I miss anything else?

I'll try to remember everything: Let's see, Meredith said Joy is the only woman in late night TV right now (something I hadn't really thought about). Then she asked Joy whose idea it was to have the guests in her house, and Joy said it was hers and that she didn't know what she was thinking when she agreed to that. She said she has cameramen and guests all over the house, in her bedroom, messing up her floors. She said one guest leaned on her countertop (marble) and broke it, and now she has to get it fixed. Then she went off on a tangent about where all the marble to make these things comes from and she felt bad wasting a whole countertop of it. lol

Thank you Green Night. I wonder who broke the countertop. Wendy Williams maybe! The network should reimburse Joy for it.

I thought today was a great show. The only thing I don’t really like about the show is Yamaneika at times. I don’t think she does it on purpose, but she gets loud and acts superior to the others when giving her opinion. Lance is dumb, but he doesn’t bring the whole thing down when he gives overly simplistic opinions. And the worst part of having comics on talkshow panels is that everyone stops and gives a fake smile/laugh even when a joke isn't that funny….

That said, the Arquette interview was fantastic, and I loved the discussion about miscarriages. I liked how Meredith related her own story and how people should remember it’s a loss. The reaction to a pregnancy and miscarriage is very powerful. I know my parents nearly divorced when I was in high school, and I came to find out when I was older from my mother that the problems really began because of several members of the family’s reactions to her becoming pregnant and then her subsequent miscarriage, including my father’s (not mine, thankfully; I remember everything with the miscarriage happened while I was on a trip to Washington).

Lance is the show’s Kardashian apologist. Seems like there's one on every talkshow. He really gets on my nerves trying to pretend the Kardashians are being 'bullied' when people criticize them for being, well, stupid famewhores. I know he’s friends with them personally, but that doesn’t make them off-limits.

Good discussion with Meredith and her panel on the tragedy in California. I hope her ratings are up because of the addition of the panel this season. Anyone know?

Yes, I like her panel too.  I don't know how to access her numbers, but they should be up since she added the panel.  I liked Mario Cantone replacing Yamaneika.  (I just can't warm up to her.)

I think that's the first time I've seen a serious Mario. On The View he plays the crazed fool. Of course over there playing the crazed fool probably helps you cope with the tension. LOL

I can't warm up to her either. It's like she is pretty much always "on". There have been a few times where she seemed to turn that off and I liked her but that rarely happens.

Missed it - is Mario a permanent replacement? I've seen his serious side on the view and I could get used to him on the panel but that makes two gay men (not that there is anything wrong with that - my son is gay) but for demographics does it matter?

No, unfortunately Yamaneika was "under the weather" so he was just filling in.  Funny, I don't even think of him being gay, just really smart.  But then, I lived next door to & hung around with two gay guys when I was in my early thirties & my roommate had to tell me they were gay.  LOL.

I'm done giving Yamaneika the benefit of the doubt. Now I just wish she'd GTFO. She disagrees on nearly every topic, then shouts over everyone and treats them like their opinions are stupid. Her response to the magazine, saying "they shouldn't attack God," was the breaking point for me. What an idiotic response--nothing about that was attacking God, you moron. It was attacking politicians hiding behind religion in order to avoid doing anything. I don't mind the rest of them even if Lance is pretty dense.

Yamaneika wasn't there again today?!? I really have tried to like her and give her a chance but her overbearing attitude is just too much. When Sheryl was like that more often then she is now on The Talk to me she still had something about her where it didn't bother me as much and now she's got it more under control. I think part of what bothers me about Yamaneika is that she tries to declare herself right so often when what she's saying sounds stupid or absurd. Someone on the show needs to have a talk with her and suggest that she try to tone things down over the holiday break.

Gotta say, I loved Mario being there today. Not only did it rid us of Yamaneika (I could just hear her screaming over the Muppets book about homelessness), but finally somebody could give a straight answer on a Kardashian topic without Bass shutting the conversation down.

I just have to say I'm liking Mario more and more on this show. He is funny and smart and is very good during the discussions. When they were discussing Melissa Rivers playing her mother in that film Mario got very quiet. Meredith said she looks so much like Joan and he agreed. Mario then looked a bit teary eyed and said he "really misses Joan." I never would have thought I would like this man so much. I always hated seeing him on The View. Different venue, different show host makes all the difference in the world. Meredith brings out the best in her guests, while The View made Mario act the fool.

Actually, when asked, Mario "plays" the clown & comic, but he's a really smart & talented guy with a lot of "irons in the fire".

When I said "made" him play the fool I meant that is what The View wanted from him. I had never seen Mario before The View. On Meredith's show he has been funny AND can hold his own in a serious discussion.

I agree, that's what The View must ask him to do, because he's able to be serious here. When he's doing comedy, a little goes

Lance's husband was really cute. He didn't add much to the conversation, but I was still glad we got another day free of Yamaneika. Nice of the show to give tickets out, but I wouldn't want to see Demi Lovato. Every time I see her on TV, she just screams and her lower notes are pretty awful. Her talent is enormously overrated. Maybe she's good in comparison to, say, Katy Perry or Taylor Swift, but I'd take Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande, even Selena Gomez over her. Nick Jonas wouldn't be so bad though. I'd heard something about how she had Adam Lambert attached, but dropped him for Jonas.
