I don't see how they could bring back the "real" Ward. I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason Hydra kept sending people through the portal: people for the being to kill and then take control of the body. We know less than nothing about the worm thing. It could have crawled into Ward just as he was still barely alive. I can see them retconning it that way. They love the actor so they are not going to let him go.
