Six of us are voting.  I fear that, when it comes to certain episodes, we are at an impasse.  So, I'm going to write up a thoughtful post on why I'm voting the way I am.  I'm not trying to persuade anyone to vote my way.  I would like to read what everyone else has to say as well.

Here's my write up:

Baby, is very close to being my favorite episode of Supernatural. I liked seeing the boys in between the hunt.  It was so refreshing to see their relationship in what had been a long angst filled run.  I needed them to talk, laugh and to just be brothers. And Bob Seger! All that I have heard about the making of the episode only adds to my enjoyment.  The rigging of the camera’s and just letting the boys drive and film, I could tell, there was an ease to it.  You could tell they were having fun with it too. And Bob Seger! I have to say the fight scenes in Baby where so well done and brutal, Jensen did some amazing work. Oh and Bob Seger!

Just My Imagination, it was interesting and believable to me that Sam would need an imaginary friend.  His life was hard.  I also understand feeling lonely when you are with people.  Sometimes you just are. I liked the idea of the Zanna. I like that they are there just for the kid, they stay until the child can cope or get along on their own.  I love the exchange after Sparkles is killed in the little girls room, comedy gold.  I needed it after season 10. 

Into the Mystic, also a favorite. 

Just my two cents.  I love the MOW episodes and I thought they did them very well in Season 11.  They seemed to be able to weave a little of the overall myth arc into the MOW episodes without it being way too much.  So I guess out of the Carver era my favorite episodes for the most part are going to be Season 11, I get stuck in my re-watch every time in season 9 and really have no desire to re-watch season 10 yet either, but have done so with many of the season 11 episodes already.

I disagree we're going nowhere, but we can do the at least one down vote if that makes things move somewhere faster.

However, I can't pass up an opportunity to wax--un-poetically--on now can I? 

Personally, I enjoyed Baby from the production standpoint, but feel it was also lacking greatly on the writing side of it. But, if I stick to my reasoning of the previous two rounds, I should probably put my votes behind Baby because it is kinda representative of the Carver years--all concept or idea and little actual story, IMO.  Except, it's thankfully lacking the one thing that defines the Carver years more than anything; the petty little jerks, that is.

I was going for Safe House because, as an overall episode, I feel it's got a better balance with the writing and production. But, thinking on it more, Carver had one foot out the door and Dabb was mostly running the show by then. Go figure?

TBH, I think the best overall episode on the list is The Werther Project--writing, directing, acting and production seemed to be all working in concert on that one--but that too isn't really very representative of the Carver years, IMO.

Ah crap, did I just talk myself into changing my voting? I guess we'll have to wait and see what I do next... . ;)

Yeah. Back when we were voting on S2 we were worried, since so much of S2 is beloved, that the game would go nowhere if everyone was only up voting episodes each time. So we had a little rule to make sure there would be some down-voting going on too.

These are the episodes I've voted for (and against) and why:

First Born -- I am one of the rare people that absolutely despises this episode.  From the beginning, I hated the Mark of Cain storyline because I knew it was going nowhere good.  Lots of speculation (at the time) that Dean would become a demon as a result.  I fought hard against the idea because 1: it seemed too obvious; and 2: it was the very thing that Dean feared becoming most of all.  I hated the idea that they would go down that road.  But they did and I hated every minute of it.  Even after he was cured, Dean was no better.  In fact, he was, in many ways, worse.  Then he killed Death and they (collectively) released the Darkness, resulting in how many human lives lost?  As much as I love Chuck and the fact that the show had the guts to confirm that he is God, it doesn't negate everything awful before it.  So I take my wrath out on this episode.  (Oh, and it was an awful waste of Tim Omundson.)

Baby -- An episode that I don't hate, but I can't call it the best of the Carver years because it doesn't have the creativity and originality that I like to see.  It's something different for Supernatural, no doubt, but it wasn't an idea original to the show.  I don't want to call it a rip-off (I hate that term), but I can't give the win to an episode that owes so much to an idea created somewhere else.  (ETA  Oh, and I hate that Bob Seger song.)

The Great Escapist and Mother's Little Helper -- As in the last round, I don't recognize these episodes by title alone, so that makes them ineligible for "best episode".

The Werther Project and Into the Mystic -- I don't have anything against the episode, so I probably down voted so it wouldn't get too far ahead.  (Sometimes I down vote the top 3 or bottom 3 just to keep the game moving.)

Dog Dean Afternoon -- The only episode of S9 that I actually like.  I don't think it's the best, but I also didn't think it was the worst, so when I saw it was heading for an early demise, I threw it a couple of votes.

Safe House -- Possibly the best of the Carver years.  I'm not 100% on that yet, though.

My two cents...

I agree with @Diane about "Just My Imagination." This is one of my favorite episodes of the Carver era as is "Into the Mystic." I also love "Baby."

I will be willing to give up "Mother's Little Helper" as long as it's not the first episode to go. It is maybe the only episode of season 9 where Sam has his own hunting story. In a season where Sam was made to be almost entirely useless and/or a complaining jerk, this one episode gave him an interesting story and actually let him defeat something. It also let him actually be reasonable with Dean. Oh and it gave some interesting backstory and actually made Abadon at least somewhat of a threat. So I like it for those reasons.

I found much of "Dog Dean Afternoon" to be humorous, but it's not one that I'm going to fight for per se.

"The Great Escapist" is one of the few episodes in season 8 where I felt for Sam. And unlike many here, Metatron is a character that I love to hate, so I like the episode, but can understand why others don't, so I am mostly wanting to not see it go first.

“What’s Up Tiger Mommy” – I pretty much dislike early season 8, and this episode is no exception. I’ve been pretty consistently trying to get rid of it.

“Heaven Can’t Wait” – I couldn’t even remember this episode from the title, and so had to look it up. When I found out it was the one where an angel was killing slightly depressed people by making them blow up into pink mist, I still couldn’t remember anything I really liked about the episode, so I’ve been trying to get rid of that one, also.

Actually I’m kind of surprised that I’m the only one down-voting those two episodes, but maybe I’m missing something worthy about them?

Once those two episodes are gone, I will focus on some of the others that are not my favorites. These are “Bad Boys” (Too much retcon for both characters, but especially Dean. No way would he have been 16 there. Just sloppy storytelling for me. Also it didn't add much to Dean's story for me. I already knew his life was crap and he sacrificed for Sam. This was just sort of overkill for me.), “Hunter Heroici” (Not as good for me as most of the rest), “Pac Man Fever” (Same as “Hunter Heroici), and “Hibbing 911” (Ditto).

Yes, but the list has changed shape quite a bit. Going nowhere, to me, would mean the list would never change. I think we're going somewhere, it's just a slower process than the previous rounds.

Well, I actually like both of those episodes enough to not vote against them, but I'm not putting my votes behind them either.

I actually think Heaven Can't Wait is a sort of underrated episode, myself. I think it gets overlooked quite a bit because of the whole "Dean is mean to Cass" part of it. But I find it's a very well-constructed episode that allows five main characters to live and breath without any of them suffering or the episode feeling like it's over-packed. And, I think the production side of it held up it's end far better than most episodes under Carver managed.

What's Up Tiger Mommy is one of the few episodes from early S8 I can genuinely say I like. The bickering is kept to a minimum and Kevin and his mom are fun enough diversions and Crowley amuses me quite a bit in this episode. Plus, I think the supernatural auction was a brilliant and fun idea.

But, I am sorry @AwesomO4000, I really want to like Just My Imagination, but I don't. Perhaps if they'd not gone quite so far after-school-specialy I could get behind it? But, considering that what represents the Carver years best are episodes I actually don't care for, maybe I shouldn't vote against it? ;)

I agree -- plus I loved Mrs. Tran and wish she were still a part of the show.  However, that doesn't mean I'm going to save it.

7 episodes haven't been voted for or against.  Not even once.  After a week of voting!  I'm not sure if that has ever happened before.

I think every round had a few in the middle that seem to sit there until a couple episodes are voted off. They're the ones no one things are the best, but aren't the worst either. So, like I said, I think the round is moving, just slower than most the previous ones. It all depends on how impatient we want to be about it all?

I agree. I don't think we are going nowhere. There is movement. I think as the game progresses you'll see the votes change as things are voted off.  I have a plan and a strategy for my voting. I'm sure others do as well.

IMO if it was decided before voting started to do it that other way, fine. Honestly I'm not keen on changing it now. But if it is changed then we should start  the whole round over again with the new rule.

I didn't even remember that part. Weirdly the episode was just a big blank for me. Maybe I'll have to go back and see if I can see what you see in it.

I also liked that even after all of these seasons, the show came up with a new being that I found entirely interesting. Sort of like Sam and Dean. I found that way more interesting than just a straight up black and white kind of characterization. I also liked that the themes from the flashbacks tied into what Sam was trying to decide now. For me it was a good blending of Monster of the Week and the current plot arc. And it was also amusing and I enjoyed all of the Zana. I hadn't found a group of beings that amusing since the Leviathans from season 7.

I don't despise it, but it's not anywhere near one of my favorites either, but for a different reason. I had the feeling early on that this was going to be yet another likely rash decision from Dean that would somehow not really come back to bite him on the ass as much as it did other characters (in this case Sam). And since this is pretty much what happened, and it all started here with this episode, I retroactively hold that against this episode.

So once I achieve some of the other objectives I'm hoping for, and my lesser episodes I like are gone, I will gladly help you in downvoting the episode.

Eh, I just didn't find it to be a well-written or well-thought out episode. I really wanted to like it for the new "legend" part of it, but it just didn't hold water for me in the end. But, I understand why you and others find it appealing. To me, the episode was kinda muddled and messy, but, it's very representative of the Carver years in that way too.

Hmmm.  I think my voting is frustrating some so I'll explain my thinking.  However, I'm up for the one 'negative' episode to move things along. 

 

First Born: An excellent episode IMO because of epic story telling, excellent acting, good characterization, and an awesome fight scene.  I knew IMMEDIATELY the Mark of Cain was a massive mistake for Dean. But it was completely in character to make that mistake at that moment. And that's part of what I love about the show. It has both heroes doing stupid things this episode (Sam nearly tries to commit suicide by grace withdrawal) becacuse they are both so spun. Mostly it's about Kevin's death and the guilt they both feel. Although I'm with Dean on this one, Sam is not responsible for Kevin, his guilt is closer to survivor guilt. Feeling bad for still existing and being the indirect cause of Kevin's death.  Plus the whole PTSD of seeing him die by his own hands.  Dean's is true guilt for lying to EVERYONE, not protecting Kevin, and inability to see a path where he could let Sam die.  Dean has no answers at this point and a metric shit ton of grief. And he just wants a win.  Show takes on the Mark thinking that the worst impact is that he dies.  Which Dean feels fine with. 

And then we get to Omundson. Damn, he was awesome.  He made me BELIEVE he was Cain. That's a frwkin' tough sell but I had no doubts. I was glued to the screen for every scene he was in. Between the writing, acting, and directing, we have very fleshed out epic character in just ONE episode.  Again, something Supernatural has done more than once. 

Then there was that helluva fight scene.  Brutal, innovative (love the towel bit), and meaningful.  

Finally, we have Crowley the master manipulator.  He is unmatched in his ability to sell what people want. It's why he's so good at the crossroads demon job.  Dean wanted some minor sense of victory, of redemption.  And Crowley handed it to him. Played him the entire time to get what he wanted. Crowley wanted a weapon against Abbadon. And he got to use his enemy's weak spot to accomplish it.  Don't forget, Crowley was still stewing in human 'feelings' at the time.  Corrupting Dean with the Mark?  Definitely made his highlights reel.  

Bottom line:  I can sit back and remember vividly just about every moment of that episode.  It exceeded all my expectations of where the show was going to go.  So... First Born will always be a favorite for me. 

 

Baby - such an intimate look at our main characters with a brutal realism that just hooked me.  Yes, there was a movie with a similar POV, but our 'Baby' was already a character.  And this episode cemented that concept without a hint of anthropomorphizing.  The dialog was spot on. The little everyday scenes were like a dinner of desserts.  And the comedy was classic Supernatural 'I don't know how orange correlates with black in a way that is new.'   Oh Cas, never change.  Plus that gag with the windshield wipers and the head?  Sorry, I'll stop now. But I find myself smiling EVERYTIME I think about that episode. 

Fan Fiction - I don't remotely care if it's fanservicing. I loved it and thought it was perfect for the 200th episode.  I'm actually glad no one died. I liked that creative choice. I liked seeing drama nerd Sam.  And the boys got some mojo out of it.  Finally, the songs were so very well done.  Dean's little head bopping to the 'and they burned my mother'!  How is that even possible to be as hilarious as it was?  How did they put that concept together?  Brilliant IMO.  

 

I know I'm very Team Show.  Happy to be that person.  But these three episodes span the range of Supernatural.  And they are all excellent IMO. 

 

ETA:  I have neither a plan nor a strategy on voting.  As evidence by my not clue-Ingle in to other things a long time ago.  Sometimes I see that it appears others are always the opposite of me but I'm Odie amongst Garfields, I suspect.  And that's okay. There's room in this world for an Odie or two.

I'm fine with how the game is playing out right now using the rules we have been using all along for other rounds. There are episodes in this group that I love almost as much..maybe one I like even more than First Born but I'm never not going to up vote First Born at this juncture of the game.

I've expressed before why I love First Born; introduction of Cain, Crowley and Dean snarkfest, Dean being a badass, but most importantly for me it gave Dean a modicum of a mytharc even as unsatisfying as I found the final resolution. Yes, I was 100% apoplectic over Dean being turned into a demon and nearly quit the show. Truly.  Ultimately, I decided rather than let it destroy me, I would give it a chance and roll with what Jensen would do with it.

For me, acting factors highly in my rating of episodes and I make no apologies for it NOR does it mean my love for a character is invalidated because I am enjoying how the actor is handling the character's changes. IMHO, Jensen did some of his best work during the MoC/demon!Dean arc. YMMV and all that.

I don't think that's the case at all.  I think we all have our reasons for voting the way we do and all are valid.  I just tend to think that a lot of votes are cancelling each other out at the moment.  Not that anyone should stop voting for an episode they love/hate, but that maybe we should consider instituting our S2 rule.  

After all, this is the first time since S2 that we didn't eliminate anything after a week of voting.  (Yes, I am that big a loser.  I checked.  ;-) )

As always, I will go with the majority.  Obviously, until we make a decision, everyone should go about voting however they like.
