I suffer from bleeding shins and face dandruff from the dryness this time of year. I totally sympathize with your pain, KPC.

I am taking it easy this weekend, but I do have to go into the city for our lacrosse team's Season home opener against Minnesota tomorrow night. Hopefully the weather will behave itself.

Apart from that, I am denying myself all kinds of treats and comfort food. The problem with getting older is that you become one of those January dieters that you used to scoff at all those years.

How many folk are still waiting for Secret Santa? I am dying to find out who gave who what.*

*I have a feeling that there should be a 'whom' somewhere in that mess, but I am too tired to think it through

Crap, I'm back to not being able to edit.

I tell you, Chad Michael Murray gives me the skeeves.

You're not the only one, KPC.

An easy way to figure out the "who/whom" thing is to substitute "him"* for the word you think might ought to be "whom," so in the case of Erratic's example it's the second "who" that should be "whom." "I am dying to find out who gave him what." Aha. :)

*You can substitute any other objective pronoun (her, us, them) but the assonance of whom/him makes it an easy choice for substitution, IMO.

I'm going to catch Agent Carter on demand too. I finished the first two seasons of Arrow. For some reason, on demand doesn't have all the season 3 eps available. I'm deciding whether I should wait for S3 to get to Netflix or buy the first eps and get current so I can watch when the show is back in a couple of weeks. Life's big decisions.

The cold/dryness is getting to me too. I've got a humidifier running but it can't keep up. It's helping a bit though.

I'm also trying to make some changes to my diet, Erratic. I'm not really cutting anything out, just cutting back. I'm using an app to keep track of what I'm eating throughout the day. It's not too inconvenient because you can scan a lot of items which are stored. I find It makes me more aware and keeps me thinking about it which helps all on its own.

Whoever recommended "Wentworth" to me -- thank you, that show is awesome. But now I have to wait for s3, dammit.

Let me ask about "Black Mirror," since folks like that one too -- any disturbing imagery in it? Things that stick in your brain and make it hard to go to sleep? I feel I need to know this before possibly trying it. And what's the deal with "Orphan Black"? This one's not Netflixable, right? So how does one access it?

Tiny C gets major dry skin every winter--her hands get scaly and red, and sometimes they crack and bleed. This year we discovered Cetaphil moisturizing cream (not the facial/body wash). This stuff comes in a jar, not a squeeze bottle, because it's thick--sort of the consistency of cold cream. Tiny calls it her "magic potion" because it has made a HUGE difference with her chapped little hands. We've tried almost everything else over the years, and the Cetaphil is the only thing that has measurably helped.

I think I'm taking an epsom bath this afternoon I think.

Vibes for your TinyC and erratic's shins and everyone else who has crappy winter skin.  I just bought some liquid vitamin e which is supposed to be good- but I feel like I should have bought some liquid rye.  Ahem.

I'm also breaking out the humidifier.

I think I, too, need be more mindful of what I eat.  On the cold night I worked I ate lots of carbs.  I felt like I deserved scalloped potatoes if I was going out in crazy cold weather.  I know I am a bit of a masochist- part of me dreaded it, the other half of me relished the challenged.

[n]Harvester,[/b] let us know how it goes.

Erratic, I am an arrow fan, so parts of season three are a bit challenging, but I still like it.  I think the cw website has about 5 of the most recent episodes.  Too bad there aren't snarky full plot recaps moment of silence for twop around.

Everything I have read about Black Mirror terrifies me. Is it really good, or just scary?

I've now watched the first 3 eps of Black Mirror. I'm not sure what you would consider disturbing imagery. I don't think there has been anything gory or terribly violent but the show is very intense and the subject matter could be described as disturbing. Maybe romantic idiot can weigh in who I think has also watched.

I caught up with Orphan Black on BBCA on demand.

No exciting plans this weekend. Just de-Christmasing the house. I'm going to wait til tomorrow to take the outside lights down. Rumor has it that it will be a balmy 36 degrees.

I adore Epsom salt baths, and they are hellish relaxing, but they don't do shit for dry skin. Throw some olive oil in the bath water with the salts. I do this and it works well.

Hope folks are keeping warm and moist. It was unseasonable warm here a couple of days ago but it's back to normal  now. Which is really not cold.

About Black Mirror I agree with Endeavor. The visuals aren't really that graphic or explicit. but the concepts and the subject matter is disturbing. Or perhaps disquieting is the word. It delves into the dark part of the human psyche - but not in terms of psychopathy or sociopathy, but more about the part of humanity that enjoys a good hanging. At the end of the way, whether you agree with it or not, it is, IMO, very meaty food for thought, but it is not a show easily digestible. The first episode is probably the most shocking, and the second one the most depressing of the 7 I've seen.

Link to comment

Thank you for the input about "Black Mirror," Endeavour and romantic idiot. I think I'll skip it for now. My brain is giving me enough disquieting crap all by itself. ;)

And thanks for info on "Orphan Black." That'll probably remain a future thing too.

Gosh, maybe it works better than Ambien without the scary side effects.

Endeavor you must buy and watch and be ready for the upcoming season!

I hope they come up with some other strong women characters with whom Agent Carter can be friends. I like her clothes too. And I was thinking that our very own KPC would be lovely in the part.

Wow, balmy 36. Hmm, well if you add 2 and multiply by 5 we are in the neighborhood.

Annie, understood - I'm a terrible saleswoman. And not to dispute your decision, but, having said that above, I should also say that BM is simply brilliant, I loved it and am grateful to my brother for putting me on to it. And I'm someone who will never watch Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones because of how dark they are.

I hope Jennifer Anniston doesn't win just for being willing to portray an unattractive character.

I'm picking Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl.

Of the movies, I've only seen Gone Girl and The Grand Budapest Hotel, so I'm really lacking in the latest movies. Boyhood is on dvd already, so hopefully will soon find out what the buzz is about.  I picked it for the Best Picture but it's just a guess.

Would love to see Gina Rodriquez win for Jane the Virgin, she covers the comedy and drama aspects of her character so well, she's really charming. And it would be a blast to see someone from a CW show actually win a major award.

For Actor in a TV Miniseries/Movie...I am torn between Billy Bob Thornton and Matthew McConaughey. I preferred BillyBT's performance in Fargo(loved!) but I don't know, since MM didn't get the Emmy, I was thinking he might pick up a GG. But I want BillyBBT to win.

And the outcome that will make me lose my shit the most if a certain nominee wins is for  Best Actress in a Television Comedy Series. Lena Dunham's name better not be uttered as winner. I don't think it will be, but it is a awards fear of mine.Every.Year.   Irrational, but a fear. :)

Then that is what I'll do. Although on demand has only one ep available now. Grrrr.

I watched the Golden Globes last night. I haven't had a chance to see many of the movies. From the tv shows I'm familiar with, I was surprised to see The Affair win. It's a good show but I haven't been wowed by it and didn't think it was that popular. Nice to see Kevin Spacey win. Looking forward to House of Cards coming back. Lots of shows and movies added to my never ending list of things I want to check out

Happy Monday! Hope everyone has a good week.

So how do you feel about the wins, val?

I can't decide if Joanna Foggartt's win is icky or not.

Aw, I didn't think it was icky trudi- tru.  She had a pretty meaty storyline last season,I thought she played it well. I thought about picking her but changed my mind. Last Emmy awards I picked her and Anna Gunn won for Breaking Bad(who I would always pick but not that time, figures I don't pick Froggart and she wins this time.)

I was ok with most of the wins but surprised about a couple like The Affair winning for Best Drama and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Best Actress. Not that she wasn't worthy, it was a tough category, but I thought for sure Frances McDormand would win, so that's why it was surprising. Speaking of Frances, every time the camera was on her, she had such a dour face. Smile lady!  It was like she had some leftover characteristics of the depressing character she played in Olive Kitteridge.

I loved that Gina Rodriguez won for Jane the Virgin, that was the best one of the night for me.

I tried to like the Affair but it was...boring to me.

In other words, I got to work today, and I work tomorrow too.  Woot!

The Affair is a slower paced series, that's for sure. But I liked it enough to stick with it.

Yahoo for more work KPC! That pretty pic of you on FB,is that a work dress?

SO glad the guy from whiplash won.

Yes, JK Simmons! Really want to see that movie.  He'll be taking home the Oscar too.

And now the CW has it's first golden globe winner.

And I'm very happy it is the delightfully deserving Gina Rodriguez.  Seeing her interviewed prior to the show starting is the whole reason I gave Jane the Virgin a shot and I have not regretted it.  She is adorable and excellent as Jane.

Congrats on booking some work KPC.  Hope it is indoors this time .

In a different type of reveal, am I the only one who didn't know Danny Strong is the co-creator (with Lee Butler) of that new show *Empire*? It's not my cup of tea, but you have to be impressed with his "Superstar"-like post-*Buffy* career.

Mine included AnnieF's return address, so the jig is up. I wore my "Kick this day in its sunshiny ass" socks today, and I have another pair with a drill on them that say "Delightfully screwy." I also received yummy lotion and soap, and this gift shows Annie's thoughtfulness and reflects that she knows me well.

Many thanks! I have been super busy at work (loving the new job still btw) so I have dropped the ball with pictures and posting, but Santa made my year a little brighter.

That must be true. I would never have guessed how much you love eating both lotion and soap. Do you have them as individual snacks or a combo meal?

I always enjoy reading about the Secret Santa goings on. I don't participate because I'm not really into gift giving or receiving, but I like seeing how creative everyone here is. It really shows how supportive this little corner of the internet is since we really have taken the time to get to know each other.

I have no clue who my SS is :o( Looking forward to finding out :0)

In other news, I've been catching up with Arrow. In the middle of the 309. I do enjoy it, and am glad I finally bit the bullet and watched. Can't stand Laurel (but I knew that long ago), and her continued existence does not augur well for the show. I'm going to try not to get too invested though - as a Chloiser, I know that way lies only disappointment. I will say that I'm a little annoyed with those guys for always making me root against my heroes

John effing Crighton, Simon and River Tam, Gunn, Captain Jack Harkness, Helo!!!

Gah.

I don't know who my Secret Santa is- I was virtuous and didn't look at the amazon receipt.

But I'm going to take a shot in the dark and guess it was Cko or AnnieF

I went to see a show in Red Bank nj last night.  When I went to take the train home (the last one), I waited in the cold for almost an hour before they canceled the train.  So I googled a hotel nearby (there are only 3), hailed a local taxi and spent the night at a marriot (thank god for credit cards).  Thank the gods I had my Hamlet lip balm (thank you SS!)  NJtransit is going to get a tart phone call from me on tuesday.  It's like they don't WANT me to visit their state!

The play, however, was very very good.

Did I guess right for my secret santa??

You were pretty close to where I'm at, KPC. It was bitter cold last night. I'm glad the show was good at least. Which one was it?

I'm a few eps behind you on Arrow, romantic idiot, so I'm not going to look at the spoiler. I'm right there with you on Laurel though. I think I'll be caught up by next week.

My SS gift had a Portland return address, so my SS didn't even try to hide his identity. Didn't need to. :) Thanks so much for my awesome gifts, Darkpool! Bonus: The When is the Doctor? book has the girlies interested in watching, so it may be a good excuse to rewatch from Nine on.

Erratic THANK YOU for being a Super Secret Santa!  My gifts were way fun and saved my lips Friday night in the cold.

The play was Alan Ackbourne's Absurd Person Singular.  It's very brittish, very funny, but the last act is (purposefully) uncomfortable.  I like the first two acts the best.  It was very very well done.  I'd recommend it.   When it's not super cold, where you live is probably very beautiful.

Who was Erratic's secret santa?
