On an unrelated but much funnier (at least to me) note was the place names used in the news sketch as they were Maryland locations (Reisterstown Road, Hunt Valley, Harford County).  Earlier this season, Towson (where I grew up) was used in a sketch so that caught my attention.  The Maryland Easter Eggs were definitely the best part of this episode.

This was the best part of the show for me - my sister lived just off Reisterstown Road and most of my family is in that area.

They also did a sketch earlier this season using Dundalk as a place (but didn't use the accent unfortunately...)

I might be in the minority here but I don't mind Gillis that much. Granted, I FF'd the DVR through his monologue, but I do that with Chapplle and Mulaney too.

I thought the show was okay. And I'm being totally shallow here but I love to see Devon..not just because he's funny, but also because he has the cutest smile in late night TV. Forgive this old woman of 64 for liking her eye candy.

Gillis' whole shtick appears to be that he gets to say terrible things because he is playing at being a terrible person. I don't think the writers forced anything on him or tried to make him look bad. He went for the loser characters because that's where he sees the jokes.

I haven't seen that as his schtick. It's pretty basic bro humor, which is more about insisting certain things are funny because you think they are and not recognizing that other people aren't interested. Plus, the very low brow "beer and cooler" stuff. He's a tailgate comedian.

I don't know a lot about how SNL works, but I had always read that the writers write skits and the host can choose whether to do them (and make changes). If Gillis "chose" the loser characters, it's because the skits he was presented with featured loser characters, i.e. that's the path the writers' chose.

Agreed, I noted in my original post that IRL Gillis was fine (i.e. in his own sets). And his monologue was horrid. The skits were OK, but they almost all presented the same kind of humor.
