S02.E06: Ghost Pointe Blank

Recommended Posts

First of all, the ghosts all doing a dance routine to Let's Dance is going to be my favorite scene in the show, no matter what happens next. That was adorable, I guess that's what you spend your time doing when your stuck in high school for all eternity, Breakfast Club style dances! And Quinn picked up on those moves real fast, good for her.

I like that this episode dealt more with the ghosts relationships with each other, with Maddy busy with plot stuff we could look more into those dynamics, like with Wally and Charlie. I can see Wally being a more classic 80s jock back when he was alive, given that he's a massive people pleaser we can probably guess that he wasn't an instigator but didn't do anything to stop his buddies, even though he's a sweet cinnamon roll now. The scene with them outside was really sweet, this episode really leaned into the Breakfast Club stuff and I love it. There are many crappy things about dying as a teenager, but it must be extra rough never getting the chance to learn what kind of person you could have been outside of high school nonsense and insecurities. At least the ghosts kids have each other, Mr. Martin's sessions have clearly not helped them with passing on to the next life, but it has at least helped them grow as much as they can, stuck in high school forever.

Poor Sandra, the living kids could have just told her that Maddie was hanging out with them without having to mention the whole "possessed by a 50s teenage ghost" thing.

Kudos again to Peyton and the guy playing Mr. Anderson, they are doing a great job at playing the two different characters. Mr. Anderson was just nailing those very distinctive voice patterns and gestures, the bit where he cut himself shaving and turned into Mr. Martin while doing that creepy eyebrow thing gave me chills.

It just hit me that the name of the school, Split River, might be a reference to the River Styx, the river in the afterlife in Greek mythology that separates the world of the living and the world of the dead. Between that, the schools high mortality rate, and the devil mascot, I feel like my Hellmouth theory has legs. Do the ghosts need to work their way through their scars to move on? Is that why Mr. Martin kept their items and kept them away from their scars so that they could never move on? What is the motive? What are these experiments?

I liked the subtle differences in how the choreography was performed based on when the ghost lived.  Rhonda had a beatnik vibe, Wally had a 80’s feel like the dancing in Dancing in the Dark video or breakfast club and Charley had the relaxed moving in to the hip hop era of the 90’s.

also the “Damn it, Janet” tickled my Rocky Horror Picture Show loving heart

That risks her asking to speak with Maddie, showing up, or insisting that Maddie immediately come home.

I do find the ghost relationships more interesting than the living ones.

That would be my guess.  Maybe that's also why Maddie found the exit, because she's not really a ghost and doesn't have scars like the other ones do.

I wish I could see a screen grab of the scars chart...I would like to do a count of the locations and see if it encompasses the three-four bit-part ghosts who were the other regulars at Mr. Martin's sessions, and/or the non-Quinn band members.

If there's a pattern that they have to follow, what happens when Dawn's scar becomes a heaven-like portal instead?  Can they not get through it to the next scar?  It's all too much for me, heh.

LOL at ghost-Anderson and his golf balls.
