Mermaid Under February 12 Share February 12 Both Natalie Morales and Ruben Blades were congenial and pleasant, so the fact that Gates is off the charts annoying became that much more apparent. His party trick of skipping over a couple of generations just to get to the only story that he thinks needs to be told; "your ancestor owned slaves" and "your ancestor was a slave" and by the way, how does that make you feel? Occasionally he prefaced "how does that make you feel?" with "you haven't had time to process this yet". No kidding, Henry. And worse, why are they so inconsistent in how they handle telling people that DNA shows they aren't a member of the family that they thought they were? He apparently surprised Ruben Blades with the information that he wasn't a Blades, and Sammy Hagar with the fact that he wasn't a Hagar. But with LL Cool J and Joe Madison, he sensitively broke the news to them off camera. 2 1 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151537-s11e6-latin-roots/#findComment-8578575
Yeah No February 13 Author Share February 13 Yeah, I have to say that Henry is getting more annoying lately and zeros in on slavery a lot. I enjoyed this episode in spite of him, though. I really liked Ruben and both of their ancestries were fascinating. I had forgotten that he broke the news to some people off camera. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151537-s11e6-latin-roots/#findComment-8579654
Driad February 13 Share February 13 Wondering if they generally break bad news with the camera running, but if the guest gets upset and asks them not to air that part, they don't. I wish Prof. Gates would stop the "Mm-hmm" and just nod. 2 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151537-s11e6-latin-roots/#findComment-8579672
A.Ham Tuesday at 01:07 AM Share Tuesday at 01:07 AM (edited) I watched this one in particular becuase of Maestro Rubén Blades. I have always really enjoyed his music in addition to admiring him as a human being. Watching him discover that he was the grandson of Ricardo Miró was something else. I am not Panamanian, but when they mentioned that one of Ricardo's most famous poems was Patria (homeland)... absolute Goosebumps. Rubén also wrote a famous song named Patria that I love. Had to go listen to it right away, heart swollen. Representation matters. I think it's up to the guest. For example, one guest suspected they might discover her father wasn't her biological father (I think it was Eva Longoria) and asked beforehand to be told off camera if they discovered that. I don't know if the show asks every guest if there's anything they don't want revealed on camera or if certain guests just come in with stipulations. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/151537-s11e6-latin-roots/#findComment-8584483
