Sonny, Em, Will and Laka race to the beach to find missing paragliders that plummeted into the ocean by a violent down draft. Kainalu invites Hina to a party with his ex-girlfriend and pretentious high school friends. Jenn doesn’t think Laka is serious enough for her, and Em and Will face temptation of rekindling their past romance. Meanwhile, Sonny secretly puts in his notice to retire and recommends Em as his replacement.

This was the best episode of the season from a scenery/cinematography perspective.  The underwater camera work in the caves was just amazing.  I can't believe that Em and Will just free dove those caves.  Why wouldn't they at least have taken scuba tanks or some kind of rebreather?

I liked Sonny recommending Em for captain.  I liked Will and Em acknowledging that their breakup was a mistake.  It's very obvious that Julie and her rich lifestyle just isn't Will.  I still don't see how Julie's family approves of Will, he doesn't fit in with them at all.

I liked Hina telling off Kainulu's ex-girlfriend's fiance.  And stealing two bottles of their expensive liquor.

Boo to Jen not giving Laka a chance, he was turning down that beach bunny for her.

I noticed a lot of episodes have the women characters making snippy remarks at the expense of the men characters. I like seeing strong women but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of the male characters especially since the guys on the show seem pretty nice overall. I also hope Sonny doesn’t retire, he is a complicated character and I enjoy his character arc.

It seems that as he's slowly getting better after his nephew's death, the catalyst to make him fully recover and stay will be the higher-ups telling him that Em won't be his replacement.  My guess is that they'd all want him to stay over getting a strange new captain.

I agree. Hina is rude, Em is angry, Jenn is dismissive, and Julia is entitled and selfish. It's like the writers don't think it's possible for a woman to be capable and agreeable at the same time.

I don't really blame Em, though.  She's trying to make a career in a male dominated field and got dumped for not wanting to be a baby-making factory.  I'd have a chip on my shoulder too.

I guess I don't really blame Jenn either.  Laka has a reputation as a player, he has seemingly slept with all of Oahu and every available tourist.  He's trying to turn a new leaf but she stood there and watched him taking that lady's number and doesn't believe him.  He could have told her he was being nice and had no intention of calling that lady, but whatever reason (probably for script reasons so they can prolong the drama) he just stood there and stammered.

Em isn't wrong to be angry; she's wrong to let her anger and frustration allow her to act in an unprofessional way. When your boss is wrong, you tell him so respectfully, you don't dress him down in the office. She and Sonny are both terrible managers and a bad team. They need to watch a few episodes of Star Trek:NG to let Picard and Riker show them how it's done.

It makes sense that Jenn is suspicious of Laka. He needs to earn her trust. But she pretended to bring a friend on their first date. He's been decent to her: there was no need for her to make a dick move like that.
