The lack of the tat is bullshit.  It helped peg him as a sailor, because the hat by itself arguably isn't enough.

The 3d animation I am ok with, mostly because a cartoon like Popeye used all different types of animation back in the day. Getting rid of the Tattoo seems weird. As for the pipe, I am sort of ok, other than the fact that the Popeye song always ended with a "toot-toot" and the sound would come out of his pipe. Although I guess the toot-toot can just as easily be the horn on a ship.

I actually thought Robin Williams doing Popeye was dead on.  And yes Shelley Duvall was perfect.  I heard Gilda Radner was originally in talks to do that role and while that would have been great too, but oh well.
