Female-fronted mysteries in three keys. The downbeat “Under the Bridge,” based on the 1997 murder of a 14-year-old Indian-Canadian girl, stars Lily Gladstone as a dogged cop, Riley Keogh as a reporter back after a decade away from her hometown, and a talented cast of young actors, playing complex variations on the “Mean Girls” trope. (Read the review.) The romantic “Land of Women” finds Gala (Eva Longoria) and her mother, Julia, played by Pedro Almódovar muse Carmen Maura, hiding out in a small Spanish town from thugs — Longoria’s absent husband owes them money. There Gala gets involved in the struggling local wine business and with handsome Amat (Santiago Cabrera). (Read the review.) And in the “Columbo”-esque “Elsbeth,” Carrie Preston’s “The Good Wife” (and “The Good Fight”) titular character has been spun off into her own comic mystery as an NYPD detective in all but the badge, bringing each week’s guest star to justice. Wendell Pierce, who always brightens the room, co-stars as the exasperated chief. (Read the review.) tv echo December 12, 2024 Share December 12, 2024 (edited) Elsbeth Star Carrie Preston Was Thrilled To Introduce A Long-Awaited Character In Season 2 By Zak Wojnar Dec 12, 2024 https://screenrant.com/elsbeth-season-2-episode-7-carrie-preston-interview/ Quote Your real-life husband, Michael Emerson, looks like he'll be Elsbeth's nemesis this season, a crooked judge with a penchant for bludgeoning. You've co-starred several times in the past, so can you talk about having Michael as a scene partner and playing with your obvious real-life chemistry to have an adversarial relationship onscreen? Carrie Preston: We’ve worked together many times, and usually it’s a situation where we don’t actively spar or dislike each other, so this was new. We definitely put aside the husband/wife roles and went right into Judge Crawford/Elsbeth. The writers gave him a meaty role, and he dug right in, and I loved the idea of Elsbeth having a chess opponent and not being quite sure what her next move is. * * * The other new character this year is Elsbeth's son, Teddy. I got to interview Ben Levi Ross, who was absolutely lovely. We've been hearing about Teddy for years, so what spurred the decision to finally bring Teddy into the fray? Carrie Preston: Ben Levi Ross is such a delight, and I absolutely adore him and his talent. And it was a special, moving moment when we finally meet him - home for Christmas! Early on, the writers definitely did their research on all the years of Elsbeth, and Teddy had been mentioned on The Good Wife. So we knew he would be a part of her new life in New York. And Jonathan Tolins, our showrunner, knew that seeing Elsbeth with Teddy would shed new light on her character. We get to see her maternal side and that very specific bond between mother and child. Can you tease what we can expect from Elsbeth and Teddy as the season goes on? Might they get to work on a case together, perhaps? Carrie Preston: The relationship between Elsbeth and her son has love and respect at its core. Audiences are going to love getting to see the two of them together even though there may be a rough patch or two, just like with any mother and child. Teddy is a professional in his own right, but there is a part of Elsbeth that wants him to follow in her footsteps in the legal profession. But is that what he really wants? tv echo December 13, 2024 Share December 13, 2024 (edited) ELSBETH: Carrie Preston & Michael Emerson talk Crawford’s threat & working together | TV Insider TV Insider Dec 12, 2024 ‘Elsbeth’ Star Carrie Preston Says Lawyer Has ‘Met Her Match’ in Killer Judge Played by Husband Michael Emerson Sharon Knolle December 12, 2024 https://www.thewrap.com/elsbeth-season-2-episode-7-carrie-preston-michael-emerson-interview/ Quote How many episodes will you be in, Michael? Emerson: I have two big ones where I’m the guest lead, and you’ll see me two or three more times, just popping up every now and then to remind the audience that I’m still out there, and I’m still trying to take my revenge. Preston: Also his little smug mug is on my bulletin board in Elsbeth’s office. There’s a moment where I take a tack and stick it right in his face. I came home and I was like, “Michael, I had to hit your face over and over again with a push pin.” And at one point I said, “God, I hope I’m not doing any voodoo on my own.” And Wendell [Pierce], who is from New Orleans, he’s like, “Don’t worry. I’ll take the evil spell off.” So thankfully, he wiped the spell off. [Laughs] You’ve worked together many times before, but can you talk about facing off as these characters once they realize they’re enemies? Preston: We were working with a lovely director who was giving us really fun things to play, and kind of letting us find it ourselves. It was really fun. We got our creative juices flowing in those scenes. We have a lot of really meaty one-on-one scenes, which you just don’t get in television. They’re very theatrical. Our showrunner Jonathan Tolins is a playwright first and most of the writers have done theater along the way. In that homage to “Columbo,” we have these really great scenes where we play six, seven page scenes where we shoot more than we actually keep, but it does feel like we’re doing a little play together. Emerson: I love those highly compressed one-on-one scenes where there’s a sense where the threat level is high and the subtext is powerful. * * * We also meet Elsbeth’s son Teddy in this episode. Carrie, you previously told me that you weren’t sure if you wanted him to ever make an appearance or stay offscreen like Columbo’s wife. Preston: It’s so wonderful to finally have Teddy be a flesh-and-blood actor standing there, because we’ve talked about him all during Season 1 and we needed to make sure that we found the right actor. And we did, played by Ben wonderfully. I don’t usually have anything to do with casting, but I said, “Why don’t you let me come in and read with your top contenders?” So I did a couple days of readings, and we had so many wonderful choices, but there was just something about what Ben brought to it that felt right. We all agreed immediately after his audition. And then when he came on set, it just felt like he had been there forever. He’s such a great actor, and he’s a theater boy and he really knows his way around the text. 'He's The Moriarty To Her Sherlock': Carrie Preston Opens Up About Michael Emerson Playing Elsbeth's Nemesis, And I'm Sold By Laura Hurley Dec 12, 2024 https://www.cinemablend.com/interviews/hes-moriarty-to-her-sherlock-carrie-preston-opens-up-michael-emerson-playing-elsbeths-nemesis Quote Elsbeth may be an incredibly intuitive woman with a knack for making connections that everybody else missed, but there was no reason to suspect that the stuffy judge had anything to do with murder other than attempting to put Delia behind bars. That is, until he mentioned "disco" and tipped Elsbeth off that he knew more about what happened than he was letting on. Carrie Preston went on: "Then once she does see that the killer is still out there, she gets very tenacious about wanting to bring whoever that killer is to justice, and she's got to figure out how to do that. So he becomes her Moby Dick or he's the Moriarty to her Sherlock. It really gives her a quite a drive for the rest of the season." Will we see some variation on that this season? Her getting it wrong, or maybe others around her solving the crime instead of it always being Elsbeth? –Ingmar “The writers are playing around a bit with [the format],” says series star Carrie Preston. But Elsbeth getting into a situation where she’s not right “doesn’t happen that much. You know, she’s pretty on top of it.” That said, “there are some cases where she isn’t as sure right off the bat as she usually is, and sometimes she gets in situations with rather seductive adversaries, and it gets a little confusing sometimes about how she’s supposed to think or feel about that person. She might sympathize with them, why they did what they did. tv echo December 14, 2024 Share December 14, 2024 "The Past Can Catch Up With You, Often in Uncomfortable Ways": Carrie Preston on What the Future Holds for 'Elsbeth' Arezou Amin Dec 13, 2024 https://collider.com/elsbeth-season-2-carrie-preston/ Quote Episode 7 also sees you getting to work opposite Michael Emerson, your real-life husband. Tell me about that experience, and getting to play off each other in this sphere. PRESTON: We’ve worked together many times, including on each other’s TV shows, so this seemed natural. It was a pleasure to get to spend so much time with him, as we don’t see each other much during filming! The writers cooked up a meaty role for him, and of course he is going to really deliver. We put aside our husband/wife roles for a bit when we act together. We are interacting as Judge Crawford and Elsbeth. He’s an adversary. Elsbeth is on to him even when she doesn’t quite know what he’s done or why. And Michael is such a brilliant actor, so our scenes really crackle. * * * It looks like Judge Crawford is going to be around for a while. What can you tease about how he and Elsbeth will continue to go toe to toe? PRESTON: He flusters her, and she doesn’t “catch” him right away. But, she flusters him, too, and he can’t figure out how to keep her out of his hair. He’s a worthy opponent, and it’s going to be a little cat and mouse for a while. But don’t count her out. Even though she’s not a blue-blood, good old boy network member like Judge Crawford, she has the smarts and savvy to stay on his trail. * * * We know Teddy is sticking around for a while, Judge Crawford will continue to pose a problem, and then, of course, the Van Ness divorce case is haunting Elsbeth. What can you tease about what the rest of the season will hold for her? PRESTON: We’ve said this season is a lot about how the past can catch up with you, often in uncomfortable ways. She’s going to continue to have to deal with these issues and also navigate new personalities with the NYPD and the challenges of parenting an adult child. She’s going to see lots more of the city, too, including some of the inequalities and issues New York struggles with. But all the while, she’s going to fall deeper in love with NYC, her job, her apartment, and her friends. And there’s always Gonzo to cheer everyone up! Yeah No December 14, 2024 Share December 14, 2024 I just love this quote of Carrie's from that interview: Quote PRESTON: I would say that the writers are well aware that women are often underestimated in the workplace and in the world. And what I love is that Elsbeth is aware of that, too. And she sometimes uses that as a weapon to disarm people in order to get the respect and power she needs and deserves. There is so much injustice in the world, but in the world of Elsbeth, justice is served. It may seem tidy, but I think it’s aspirational. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/143840-media-thread-for-elsbeth/page/3/#findComment-8532598

Do not trust Google AI summaries. Always go to an actual source because AI misses nuance. Elsbeth was renewed for the 2024-2025 season but that's the current season so it is pulling information about the second season renewal. There has been no news about Season 3. And this is a great example to demonstrate the failings of Google AI. That said, I was an academic librarian when Wikipedia began, and we used to caution students about its unreliability. But then, within about a year, Wikipedia was comparable to Britannica, and is now a generally good source. So, yes, Google AI is currently terrible. But stay tuned? My last job before Elsbeth was on East New York, which was a CBS police procedural shot in New York. And that’s why when we shot this episode, and we’re casting it, I thought to ask Billy Finkelstein, who was the showrunner of East New York, to play the showrunner of Father Crime. Billy was a writer/producer on The Good Fight, which I also worked on, we knew each other from that. We worked together for five years on that.” “So it was another thing that just made it all feel so real for us because we actually had a showrunner playing the showrunner,” he continued. “And the production team went crazy. There were Father Crime hats and pens and, coffee mugs, and posters from 20 different seasons of the show. We created this whole alternate universe that some of us, we started to forget that Father Crime isn’t a real show.” * * * As previously mentioned, The Connors star Laurie Metcalf will be playing Father Crime star Regina, and she is the latest big guest star on Elsbeth. Jonathan Tolins praised Metcalf, saying she is “one of the greatest actresses of all time.” He shared, “And so we knew she would just have a field day playing an actress who considers herself and wants to be considered a very serious trained actress, but who has had the good fortune and bad luck to be trapped in one role for 20 years. She is desperate to prove herself, especially because everyone in her acting class, when she was a young person or a younger person, has gone on to huge awards and important careers, and she still feels the stigma of being on a TV procedural. And so she has an opportunity now to play Lady Em in the Scottish play in the West End, and she won’t let anything keep her from doing that.” Edited December 19, 2024 by tv echo 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/143840-media-thread-for-elsbeth/page/3/#findComment-8536699

Does she take on any of the colors or textures that she sees? And the answer was, no, she does not. That she is steadfast, and I really love that.” ... “We wanted, in Elsbeth, for New York to be this sleek, cool, interesting town, where everybody's in sleek, cool colors,” Lawson told me. “Blues, grays, metallics, we wanted Elsbeth to always be looking up at everybody, both figuratively and literally. Especially in the first season, we would have background actors around her who were super tall, or background actors playing cops who were super tall, so that she was always looking up.” This is an elegant solution, a way to force perspective and make the audience see the world through Elsbeth’s eyes. Eyes which I must point out, are much more observant than anyone around her seems to comprehend. Tascioni is an exuberant person by nature, which many antagonists mistake for naivete. Oh, but they are wrong. And as she goes about taking down bad guys, Tascioni gets to wear some truly beautiful clothes. It is so much fun to see interesting story ideas, and happy clothes on people who obviously know what they are doing and love their work is definitely not something we are used to. * * * “I think Elsbeth is very confident in her style and in the way she conducts herself and carries herself,” Lawson told me. “We wanted there to be a sense of wonder and awe on Elsbeth's part, and this desire on her part to not be one of these New Yorkers, but to admire them. There's definitely a midwestern quality, a good, wholesome honesty that comes with her to New York. And New York is perhaps a little more jaded, global and all knowing.” * * * The crash and clash of colors and patterns on screen could easily become chaotic or overwhelming. But Lawson is a master of his craft and he knows exactly how far he can push something, he sees the line where personal style threatens to become camp. He plays with the boundaries, and it is so much fun to watch. “We wanted to always have her stand out,” Lawson explained, “not like a sore thumb, because that has a negative connotation. The writers have been putting in every so often people who are truly taken with her style, and then we have a few characters this season who remark on the way she looks, the way she dresses, and you know, so that just sort of reinforces her own sense of style and self. She definitely doesn't lose herself. She comes around the corner and the first thing you see is the pattern, or the color or her hair, and it's like that little piece of sand in your bathing suit that just annoys you. And the other thing, I think, New Yorkers being that sort of jaded, cool people that they are, find it annoying to have somebody always effervescent and positive.” * * * As I have argued many times before, costumes are filled with clues, with information that just can’t be spelled out in dialogue. The multiple tote bags Elsbeth drags around are a great example of this. “I usually do 3,” Lawson told me. “I like odd numbers, so it's 2 on one arm and one on the other. I have been having such a good time looking for these bags. First of all, I love bags that are organic to our story. For example, in the first episode of this season we were at the opera, and there was a logo at the opera. Then, the next time we see Elsbeth, she's carrying a tote bag with the opera logo on it, like she got it at the gift shop. And she would. I do go to the souvenir stores in New York, especially in midtown, there are all these like giant souvenir stores, and I love getting the bags from there that say New York, or, you know, have taxicabs on them, or whatever. The other thing I try to do is try to balance. If there's a bag that has lots of small patterns or whatever, then I'll have a bag, maybe with a bigger pattern, and then I'll have a more solid bag, so that they all balance each other out nicely.” There are times when Tascioni uses her wardrobe as a distraction, “there are times where we do want those clownish moments. You know, like the mittens hanging off the coat, and she's doing a lot of gesturing, and the mittens are flying around. She’s a smart cookie, he knows what she's doing. It can be very mesmerizing, and sort of throws a person off a bit. If there's a lot of action and a lot of things going on that being said I always walk the line of ‘is this ridiculous?’ I know it's outlandish, and I know it's exaggerated. But is it ridiculous or are we keeping it real in her world? That's always the line we walk. You'll notice Elsbeth doesn't carry all of her bags when the crime is solved,” Lawson told me. “She’s saying, this is how it happened. Her bags are her walking, filing cabinet, and she doesn't need them. It's solved, she doesn't need the filing cabinet at that point.” I promise, lovely reader, the costumes always have stories of their own to tell. tv echo January 29 Share January 29 ‘Elsbeth’ Finally Reveals What Happened in Chicago in ‘Most Emotional Scene We’ve Ever Done’ — What to Expect Kelli Boyle January 28, 2025 https://www.tvinsider.com/1172802/when-is-elsbeth-on-carrie-preston-eric-mccormack/ Spoiler Tom’s wellness center helps Elsbeth more than she expected. She arrived to investigate a murder, but she’ll leave having investigated her feelings more deeply. As revealed in the December midseason finale, Elsbeth was roped into a high-profile divorce case in Chicago during which documents that would’ve helped a struggling woman were hidden. The Van Ness divorce scandal was leaked to the press with the help of Judge Crawford (Michael Emerson, Preston’s husband) as part of their ongoing bitter feud. The scandal has shocked Elsbeth’s work colleagues, who are now questioning the morals of a woman known among the bureau for her morality. “She checks into the wellness center partly to get away from the scandal because it just gives her a chance to not be in people’s faces at the precinct,” Tolins tells TV Insider about Elsbeth‘s return. “And also, she ends up paired with a journey partner, played by Marcia Debonis, who is one of my favorite actresses, and who is so open and emotionally available that she becomes the perfect person for Elsbeth to talk to and unburden herself and really reveal what happened in Chicago. I think people are going to really like that.” * * * Expect emotions to run deep in a scene by a campfire at the retreat. “Carrie and Marcia have a scene by a campfire. It’s beautifully written by Leah Nanako Winkler and directed by Nancy Hower, and it is one of the most emotional scenes we’ve ever done, if not the most emotional scene we’ve ever done. It is so beautiful. I can’t wait for people to see it,” says Tolins. What makes it pack such a punch? “Well, we get to hear the pain and the anger that Elsbeth had about what happened in Chicago,” Tolins reveals, “which is the reason she left her whole life, she left the law and decided to move to New York and take this job working with the police.” Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/143840-media-thread-for-elsbeth/page/3/#findComment-8566658

tv echo Friday at 01:58 PM Share Friday at 01:58 PM (edited) "People Will Be Surprised by How Dark and Moving the Show Can Be": 'Elsbeth' Showrunner on What That Bombshell Revelation Means By Arezou Amin Jan 30, 2025 https://collider.com/elsbeth-season-2-episode-9-showrunner-jonathan-tolins/ Quote COLLIDER: Now that Elsbeth is back from hiatus, we’re kicking things off with that bombshell move from Judge Crawford exposing Elsbeth’s role in the Van Ness divorce. Can you tease how Elsbeth is going to retaliate in the back half of the season? JONATHAN TOLINS: Elsbeth now has two challenges. First, she needs to clear her name of wrongdoing in the Van Ness divorce case. And second, she needs to go up against Judge Crawford, whom she suspects is a murderer. Both of these matters will require creative thinking and help from her friends and colleagues. * * * The fallout from this revelation leads to this new tension between Elsbeth and Kaya. Can you talk about rocking the foundations of one of the show’s most stable friendships? TOLINS: Elsbeth and Kaya have become very close friends despite their different generations, backgrounds, and financial status. Kaya is younger and still pretty idealistic, whereas Elsbeth spent a lot of time working in the gray areas of the law in Chicago. We thought it would be interesting if something from Elsbeth’s past legal career, something difficult to explain, created a wedge between them. They’re both sensitive, intelligent women with strong moral convictions, so it’s interesting for them to work through the issue, without forgetting what they’ve come to mean to each other. By the end of the episode, the whole team is in on Elsbeth’s quest to bring Crawford down. How has it been crafting this season-long mission, this time with Wagner and Blanke along for the ride as opposed to Elsbeth riding solo? TOLINS: We started without having everything figured out, just a basic map of where we wanted to go. I think it’s important to leave room for surprises in the writing process, otherwise, things could feel too pat. We originally saw the Van Ness divorce and the Judge Crawford story as completely separate, but then they merged, with one taking over the other. That was very exciting to us because it seemed to happen organically. We also found natural ways for our other characters to be pulled into the story, because they care about Elsbeth and about right and wrong. * * * With the back half of the season starting now, is there anything you can tease about the episodes coming up? Maybe something that you’ve been excited to see on-screen? TOLINS: As we’ve worked on the show over more episodes, we’ve discovered more emotional places for Elsbeth and the series to go to, which has been very exciting. I think people will be surprised by how dark and moving the show can be, without ever losing the sense of fun that has defined the character and the series. I hope people will keep watching and go on the ride. tv echo 4 minutes ago Share 4 minutes ago (edited) Carrie Preston Can't Get Enough of Elsbeth's Feel-Good Attitude Either By Radhika Menon Feb 6, 2025 https://www.marieclaire.com/culture/tv-shows/carrie-preston-elsbeth-season-2-interview/ Quote MC: Speaking of network television, these formats are becoming more popular. What do you think about the current chatter in the industry about network TV’s so-called comeback? CP: I love it. When streaming started happening, I remember thinking, how is this going to sustain itself? Like, what is the business model? You know what a great business model is? Network TV. We had the major streaming boom and now we're seeing that the network business model continues to thrive and that these stories are what young people are craving. People like to say that network is for older people, but I have a very young fan base watching Elsbeth and they want those procedurals. I think it has something to do with people wanting a beginning, middle, and end, and a cathartic, joyful, intelligent experience, and then they can go to sleep and not have nightmares. In our show, you know the murderer. So you don't have the stress of figuring it out, and you get the delight of watching this woman who approaches things in such an unconventional way piece it together. It's a throwback to another time: Colombo, Murder, She Wrote, Agatha Christie. Things from a different time period that have a familiar structure, but with a fresh breath of air. * * * MC: Let’s talk fashion. Between the hats, the tote bags, and the bright colors, Elsbeth has a signature look. How would you describe her style? CP: I always say that she is expressing her emotions, joy, curiosity, and singularity through her clothes. She dresses to please herself. It makes her feel good to put on a shirt with a pink bow and pair it with a jacket that has polka dots or plaid, and carry three totes that have everything she might need for her day in them. Putting those different colors together brings her joy. But she also does know that it throws people off. In a way, it's a tool because people will think that she's not as smart or think that she's silly by the way she dresses, and then she will end up using that as a bit of a weapon to solve her case or to throw one of her adversaries off their game. * * * MC: One of the most exciting developments in this season is Elsbeth facing off with the corrupt judge, played by your husband Michael Emerson. You two have worked together quite a bit over the years. What’s it like to work with your partner? CP: We feel fortunate whenever something like that comes along where we get to play together. The writers wanted to find a way to get Michael on Elsbeth. They tailor-made this role for him, and you can certainly tell. He was ready to dive into it with relish. People ask, “Did you work on it at home together? Did you rehearse together?” And the answer is, no, we don’t. We didn't even really talk about it. He's a consummate professional and this is the show that I'm playing the lead on, so I feel like I know the character pretty well. We just showed up and worked on it together like we would with any other guest actor, and that makes it fresh and fun. He and I already have a history together, obviously, so there's that level of trust that we didn't need to talk much. We just let each other do what they do best and then play together like we were playing in a jazz group or something. * * * MC: I love the running gag of firemen falling in love with Elsbeth because of her hair color. Is a love interest something you’d be interested in exploring for the character? CP: You might want to tune into the Valentine's Day episode. * * * MC: Relatedly, have you seen the fans online shipping Kaya and Elsbeth? You even have a ship name: #KayaBeth. How would you feel about a storyline there? CP: I haven’t seen anything about #KayaBeth, but I’ve heard about it. The way Elsbeth has been written with her past and everything, I don't know if she would do that. But she's very open to things and I find that we're in a very fluid world. I like that people would think this in the same way that they thought about it with Glinda and Elphaba [in Wicked]. It's a friendship and that's the love story there, and I really treasure that. I'm glad that the fans are picking up on the love between them, and then I'll leave any of the other fantasizing to them. But I am grateful that people are responding so much to our characters and our affection and respect for each other. MC: Is there anything else that you'd want to explore as the character of Elsbeth in future seasons? CP: People keep saying, when's Elsbeth: The Musical coming? I mean, wouldn't that be hilarious? We have nothing but a parade of Broadway stars coming through our show, so I think an original musical could be really fun as one of those bottle episodes. Maybe it's a dream!
