Twilight Man October 7, 2023 Share October 7, 2023 I put this under TV Dramas originally because there was talk of this being a TV miniseries, but, apparently, Costner wants to showcase this in theaters first. and now, the reason why Costner left "Yellowstone" Horizon is a “beautiful story” that spans 15 years in the American west, focusing on the white settlers moving across the country and the indigenous groups living there. ............ and it's going to "FEEL" like fifteen years after you get done watching all ELEVEN hours of it. Parts One and Two are already "in the can" and will be premiering in theaters in June and August of 2024. Parts Three and Four are on indefinite hiatus due to the actors strike. Link to comment

Frost February 26 Share February 26 The trailer looks good. I'm very curious how Costner addresses the competing narratives of white settlers bravely pushing West and the indigenous peoples they're displacing. Link to comment
Snazzy Daisy February 27 Share February 27 Kevin Costner's son Hayes makes acting debut in Horizon: An American Saga Quote The elder Costner, 69, clarified that he and his son play the same lead character in the film. "Hayes plays the namesake character that I actually play in the movie. He's 13 years old and the screenplay's been around longer than that," the actor and filmmaker told PEOPLE. He also joked that he cast his son in order to spend some quality time with him. "I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me," he said. "I'm like any other parent, I'm trying to figure out, like, 'This is really neat. You should come be with me.'" Link to comment

Costner spoke at length about the inspirations behind the film, what motivated him to tell the story in this way, and why he chose to play the character. The film has been a longtime passion project for Costner, who has tried to get it off the ground since as far back as 1988. Chapter 1 of the story is slated to release in theaters on June 28, 2024, and Chapter 2 will open on August 16, 2024. At the end of the presentation, Costner also received the CinemaCon Visionary Award. Warner Bros. 2024 CinemaCon Panel Live Blog By Sean O'Connell April 9, 2024 https://www.cinemablend.com/news/live/warner-bros-2024-cinemacon-panel-live-blog Quote Up next, it's time for Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Story, and Costner is coming on stage! * * * Costner talks about why he needed to go back to the Western. Says that going to the movie speaks to him, and he always sought stories that would bring an audience entertainment. He said he always found that inspiration in the story of America. * * * Costner says he prefers "Journey Movies" over "Plot Movies." He'd prefer audiences taking a ride. Horizon covers 12 years of time, starting before the Civil War and through it. He talks about how the war had an effect on The West, that he will explore. He started working on this movie in 1988. And he says that he has written four movies in this saga. Tells audiences: * * * Horizon part one arrives in June. Part two arrives in August. We'll see if Costner gets to keep going, and delivering all four movies he has mapped out. It's funny that Sam Worthington is in Horizon, given that he's also in Avatar, which has an endless number of chapters to it... Edited April 10 by tv echo Link to comment

tv echo July 1 Share July 1 (edited) Horizon 1 debuted in third place this past weekend... Box Office: ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ Scores Franchise-Best $53 Million Debut, Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Misfires With $11 Million By Rebecca Rubin June 30, 2024 https://variety.com/2024/film/box-office/box-office-a-quiet-place-day-scores-kevin-costner-horizon-misfires-1236057461/ Quote Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for this weekend’s other newcomer, Kevin Costner’s epic gamble “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1.” The $100 million-budgeted film about the expanding Western frontier has collected a disastrous $11 million from 3,334 theaters. It landed in a distant third place on domestic box office charts. Costner and distributor Warner Bros. were counting on fans of the actor’s hit TV show “Yellowstone” to help the film to break out in America’s heartland. But dismal reviews and negative word-of-mouth from moviegoers — the three-hour film notched a 39% Rotten Tomato score and B- CinemaScore — likely won’t inspire a rebound in ticket sales. That’s problematic because a sequel, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2,” is scheduled to hit the big screen in two months, on Aug. 16. Costner, who reportedly spent more than $38 million of his own money to fund the movie series (which he wants to expand to four parts), has more to lose than Warners. The studio is only on the hook to pay for distribution. One theory behind the dismal turnout is that “Horizon” felt more like a mini-series than a feature film. “Kevin Costner has had a lot of exposure in ‘Yellowstone’ on Paramount+. In this market, a theatrical production that looks like television has a disadvantage,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. He added that “good ancillary income will mitigate some of the red ink, but not all of it.” Costner’s Costly ‘Horizon’ Bites Box Office Dust By Brooks Barnes June 30, 2024 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/30/business/kevin-costner-horizon-box-office.html Quote But ticket buyers largely rebuffed Kevin Costner’s three-hour vanity project, “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1,” the supposed start of an Old West movie series that was once headed straight to a streaming service before managing to get bumped up to the big screen. * * * Mr. Costner’s heavily publicized “Horizon,” which cost an estimated $100 million to make and another $30 million to market, arrived as a distant third. It was on pace to earn $11 million, analysts said. (Theaters and studios split ticket sales roughly 50-50.) Mr. Costner had been holding out hope that fans of the hit contemporary Western series “Yellowstone,” particularly those in the middle of the country, would flock to theaters. It proved to be a pipe dream. Could “Horizon” gain its footing in the coming weeks? Box office experts were not optimistic, citing weak reviews. In addition, ticket buyers gave “Horizon” a grade of B-minus in CinemaScore exit polls, which means that word of mouth will be soft. Warner Bros. will release the second chapter on Aug. 16. Mr. Costner has already started to make Part 3 and has also announced a fourth installment. Warner Bros. is only serving as a distributor for hire, meaning that the studio has invested nothing in the films and, therefore, has no financial exposure. (The company will receive a cut of ticket sales — about 8 percent — as a fee for its services.) To finance the project, Mr. Costner mortgaged real estate in Santa Barbara, Calif., and lined up support from private investors. He left “Yellowstone” to focus on “Horizon.” Costner’s Costly ‘Horizon’ Bites Box Office Dust By Brooks Barnes June 30, 2024 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/30/business/kevin-costner-horizon-box-office.html Quote Here are the demographics, with a strong 47% of the audience in the 55+ age bracket… 73% Caucasian 16% Hispanic 6% African-American 5% Asian/Native-American * * * The marketing campaign for Horizon focused on an older audience that was perhaps turned away by poor reviews (40% critical/70% audience on RT) and a lengthy 3-hour runtime. Costner himself has not been a headlining draw in about two decades. Whether this bodes ill for the planned theatrical bow of Horizon Chapter 2 on August 16 or the financing of the yet-to-be-produced next two installments of Costner’s Western saga remains to be seen. Grassroots promotion could keep the film alive, but with this kind of word-of-mouth (“B-” CinemaScore, 69% positive/3 stars on PostTrak), it’s difficult to imagine. Severin August 30 Share August 30 Ok, so I just watched this on Max, and I'm a sucker for westerns. Having said that, I found the beginning a bit confusing, as it seemed to jump randomly in time and setting. Also, I was kinda bored for the first hour or so. However, as the movie went on it got more suspenseful and interesting. Overall I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the sequels. My main issue is that this doesn't really work as a movie. A movie, even with planned sequels, needs a beginning, middle, and end. This had 3 beginnings. I think it would have worked much better as a mini-series and garnered more positive reviews.
