SoMuchTV August 21, 2023 Share August 21, 2023 Can you tell us any more about this show? Where is it airing/streaming? Who's in it? IMDB and theTVdb are not very helpful. I see it's in dramas. Apparently it's a remake or reboot of something (based on the topics here) but all I can see with a similar name is a comedy from the early 2000's. AnimeMania December 7, 2024 Share December 7, 2024 (edited) Doc is a Medical Drama TV Series airing on January 7, 2025 on FOX at 9pm. Doc is based on an ongoing Italian TV Series, currently in it's 3rd Season, "Doc — Nelle tue mani (Doc – In your hands)", which was inspired by a true story where a Chief of ER forgot the last 12 years of his life after being in a car accident. The hard-charging, brilliant Dr. Amy Larsen, Chief of Internal and Family Medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After being in a car crash, the resulting brain injury erases the last eight years of her life. Amy must navigate an unfamiliar world where she has no recollection of the patients she's treated, colleagues she's crossed, the soulmate she divorced, the man she now loves or the tragedy that caused her to push everyone away. Amy can rely only on her estranged 17-year-old daughter, whom she remembers as a 9-year-old child, and a handful of devoted friends, as she struggles to continue practicing medicine, despite having lost nearly a decade of valuable knowledge and experience. Amy must start her medical career over as an intern and somehow rebuild her life from the fractured pieces which remain. Molly Parker as Dr. Amy Larsen, the hard-charging and brilliant Chief of Internal and Family Medicine at Westside Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who receives a traumatic brain injury that erased her memories from the last eight years of her life. She must resume her medical career as a 1st-year resident. Omar Metwally as Dr. Michael Hamda, the new Westside Hospital Chief Medical Officer (CMO), who possesses a natural authority and obvious intelligence. Michael works hard to bring humanity back to the business of medicine. He trained as an MD, but realized early on that he could do more good behind the scenes, so he got an MBA and followed the administrative path. While driven in his career, Michael has always put his family first. And even though his marriage to Dr. Amy Larsen fell apart, he's still an excellent Dad and does his best to manage the complicated relationship he has with his ex-wife, despite the fact that they now work together. Amirah Vann as Dr. Gina Walker, a neuropsychiatrist and Amy's best friend for two decades, Gina is witty, warm and dedicated. Post-accident, she's also Amy's doctor. It's not easy for her to balance the two competing and colliding roles she plays in Amy's life – being both her doctor and her friend – but she walks that fine line with grace, good humor and a lot of love. Where she sometimes has more trouble is with navigating her own personal life. Jon Ecker as Dr. Jake Heller, the dedicated and charming Chief Resident, who loves Amy, professionally and personally. And though, painfully, she now has no recollection that she was in love with him, Jake continues to defend and champion Amy's work in the hospital. While Jake is warm and fun to be around, he keeps a lot close to the vest – including his troubled upbringing and his strained relationship with his ex-wife, Rachel. They share custody of their 5-year-old daughter, Mia, who is the most important thing in the world to Jake. Anya Banerjee as Dr. Sonya Maitra, a 3rd year resident, she's self-deprecating and funny – or snarky, depending who she's talking to. She hates the way Amy has treated her and others at the hospital. But it's complicated, because Jake, who adores Amy, is Sonya's closest friend. Sonya comes from a close-knit family: her parents have been married 30 years, and she is the "last single sibling". Sonya acutely feels the pressure to hurry up and tie the knot, since her biological clock is ticking. But sadly, Mr. Right has been elusive. Tasked with taking care of Amy after her accident, she starts to see another side to the boss she detests. Scott Wolf as Dr. Richard Miller, an attending physician, Richard is uptight, ambitious, and afraid to admit mistakes. However, he's extremely kind to his subordinates and completely devoted to his family. He adores his lawyer wife, Victoria, and their kids. Unfortunately, recent family drama has caused upheaval at home and is distracting him at work. Richard and Amy were once friends, until she "stole" the coveted position of Chief of Internal and Family Medicine from him. Which is currently his position, after Amy had her accident. Richard is enjoying the top position, where he is sure he belongs, at least for now... Patrick Walker as Theodore "TJ" Coleman, a 1st-year resident, TJ is wickedly smart, kind, and strong. TJ is charismatic with an infectious smile, a veteran who is the son of two cops. TJ and Amy go back a long way – in fact, she was his inspiration to become a physician. TJ keeps this a secret, not wanting it to appear that he received any preferential treatment from the Chief of Internal Medicine. When Amy returns to work after her accident, TJ, now basically her equal, will have her back and prove fiercely dedicated to helping his role model navigate the challenges of her new reality. tv echo January 12 Share January 12 (edited) Review: ‘The Pitt’ offers hyperrealism, whereas ‘Doc’ leans into melodrama By Robert Lloyd Jan 9, 2025 https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2025-01-09/the-pitt-max-doc-fox-review Quote “Doc” is a soap opera with medical elements; “The Pitt” is a hyper-realistic medical drama with soap opera elements. Both offer a critique of bedside manner; patients that, seemingly fine, suddenly lose consciousness; red herrings, dead ends and wrong trees to bark up. * * * Adapted by Barbie Kligman from an Italian series, “Doc” begins in the aftermath of the crash; we get to see something going on inside an open skull, and then we meet Amy, whose misadventure has left her with no more than a bandage on her head, a possibly permanent case of partial retrograde amnesia and the cognitive dissonance that, as a virtual time traveler, assails her at every turn. She will encounter the husband to whom she finds she’s no longer married, now running the hospital (Omar Metwally as Dr. Michael Hamda) where she worked, and her suddenly teenage daughter, Katie (Charlotte Fountain-Jardim); neither know quite what to make of her. And she’ll learn that her son is dead, a trauma that turned her cold and made her unpopular at work and with patients, though no less super powerful a diagnostician — which she remains. Confused? So is everyone. Neither does she recall the secret affair she’d been carrying on with the hunky chief resident, Dr. Jake Heller (Jon-Michael Ecker), who isn’t about to remind her; or know why Dr. Sonya Maitra (Anya Banerjee), who has completely escaped her memory, doesn’t seem to like her at all; or why the nurses mock her behind her back; or that Dr. Richard Miller (Scott Wolf), now in her old post as chief of medicine, is worried about something she used to know and hopes she won’t remember. Offering support are best friend Dr. Gina Walker (Amirah Vann), the hospital psychiatrist, and young Dr. TJ Coleman (Patrick Walker), inspired by Amy to practice medicine. In no time at all, Amy is wandering the halls, peeking in on patients, getting underfoot. Bumped down to a sort of a shadow doctor, trailing her colleagues like an intern — she has to retake her medical boards — she will nevertheless discover most of what needs to be discovered. But she stays humble about it. “Never saw you deferring to anyone before,” observes Dr. Miller. “Fresh start, new rules,” says Amy. “That sounds like the tag line for a really bad sitcom.” It’s not a comedy, but in a way it is — second chances and all. And Parker, who shines a light all over the show, is particularly delightful and moving in her reborn persona. “Doc” can be a little corny, a little too obviously like television, when it comes to the cases, but is all in all quite entertaining. tv echo January 13 Share January 13 (edited) ‘Doc’ Comes to Life for Fox: How Showrunner Hank Steinberg Adapted an Italian Melodrama for a U.S. Audience By Cynthia Littleton Jan 10, 2025 https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/doc-hank-steinberg-molly-parker-fox-drama-1236271895/ Quote How did the Italian rendition of “Doc” come on your radar? [Showrunner Hank Steinberg:] Sony had acquired the rights and they sent it to me. I watched all of Season 1 pretty quickly. The first thing I thought is, how to adapt it for an American audience, how to make it different. In the Italian version, the lead was male and the time difference was 12 years. And the daughter, for example, was already in college. And some of the other things were similar. But as I digested it, I thought the first thing we should do is flip the genders. I thought we could make that more interesting in the American version. And I liked the idea of the character has become walled up and guarded and really, really tough on people. And I thought that reaction to grief is something we’ve seen in men quite a lot on television, but I feel like we haven’t seen that in a woman who was warm and soulful and empathetic who because of a terrible thing that happened to her really changed and became so difficult to reach. I immediately thought that was something that would make the American show feel a little fresher and just different. It is jarring in one of the early scenes with a pregnant woman who is her patient to hear her say ‘You don’t have to like me now, you can like me after I save your life.” She’s a very brusque doctor. And that felt more interesting to me, and I thought we could really find a great actress to play all the complexities of this role. And then I also thought that 12 years [of memory loss] is a bit too long of a time. And I thought that dichotomy between 2016 and 2024 would be really powerful. And then, of course, I went looking for a female writer to collaborate with. I’ve known Barbie Kligman I’ve known over the years. We just rolled up our sleeves and got to work. It was an enormously fruitful collaboration. And Molly is incredible. She has such depth and complexity, and she really can play all sides of the character. And not only can she play all sides of the character — the arrogance, the roughness, the warmth, the empathy – she has a way of metabolizing all those facets. And you see as the series progresses, where we use flashbacks to show her before and after and you see her in the present struggling with how to understand who she became in the past. She metabolizes all the aspects of the best version of who this woman can be and the worst version of who the woman can be. * * * This show must be a puzzle to produce with the shifting time frames and the slow reveal of how Amy fills in her memory gap. In the pilot, the flashbacks are her memories, and then occasionally the memories of her lover, in quick hits. But as we go through the series, we use omniscient flashbacks to show the missing years of what she doesn’t remember, so that the audience can be informed about the gaps. And then in some episodes, we use subjective flashbacks from other from other characters’ points of view. * * * Spoiler alert — regarding the accident that causes her memory loss. In all sincerity, have you thought about including a “Don’t text and drive” PSA at the end of the first episode? It is literally the most dangerous thing you can do. I think they’ve proven that it’s way more dangerous than drunk driving. In the Italian version, the character gets shot in the head by an angry patient, and it’s pretty melodramatic. So I wanted to ground her injury in her character. She’s getting off work late at night. She’s a workaholic. She’s too tired, distracted, and she can’t resist checking her phone for the incoming message. … I don’t think we need a PSA, because you see the scene and you go, “I don’t want that to happen to me.” Edited January 13 by tv echo 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/140736-in-the-media-whats-up-doc/#findComment-8553552
