S01.E01: Chapter One: Spirit Week

So I'm an OG Pretty Little Liars fan, and wasn't sure what to expect. But they had me at the Orgy version of Blue Monday. Am I dating myself? Maybe, but that song slapped at parties in '99. Do I love me a slasher horror? Most definitely. Am I absolutely horrified that they are implying people my age can have children in high school? You bet. I'll take being stalked by a homicidal and potentially supernatural being any day rather than admit I'm 40 any day of the week. Am I all in? Hell yes. 

A new Karen has risen. She is the boss level Karen. Craft stores and Trader Joe's in the future be warned - this bitch is ready to throw a category 10 tantrum in your store. Prepare your staff accordingly.  

So far I'm really liking where this is going. Clearly playing the role of the handsome statutory rapist is Tabby's boss at the movie theatre known hereafter as Popcorn Pedo. If nothing else, I don't see them doing that barf-y star-crossed lover thing they pulled on the OG show with Ezra and Aria. 

Was I the only one that didn't realize that Karen had a twin until the dinner scene with Bad Cop dad and In Denial (and possibly medicated) Mom? Did she even go the school or is this a split personality thing where only Karen can see her twin?

Her sister was cast as the white swan remember? That’s why she got mad she wasn’t cast as the black swan. Well that and she’s a racist b**ch 
 

I’m confused and kinda lost with the school having ballet taught. I mean that many kids in this small dying (from establishing shots) town just LOVE them some ballet that it’s a school program? And one that can help you get into Alvin Ailey??

First episode was giving me slight spoof. We'll see how the rest goes. I watched OG PLL from beginning to bitter end. So I can't help myself with this thing.

Yes! I loved that. I also really liked the shout out to The Shining twins when Imogen and Karen walked down the hall to find her mother in the bathtub (more Shining!)

Also I get the obvious black swan reference but is it also a Suspiria nod? I mean with the random dance class in this school

There are just so many little “nods” — the whole “leave the key” thing, the name of the real estate company, various people’s first names, etc. It’s giving me horror-nerd fun!

I am also trying to look at all the photos hanging on the wall of the pizza place, but they’re hard to see. I thought I saw David Naughton but maybe I tricked myself into thinking that!

It also made me think of IT, especially with the A being written in blood. They are really leaning into the horror in this one, I dig it.

I watched the OG PLL way back when I was in high school, from the beginning to the bitter end, chugging wine with my sorority sisters while hoping that the buzz would help the story make more sense, so of course I am here for this. Not a bad start to the show, the 90s gimmick with the new liars moms is an interesting hook, even though the complicated dynamics between the main girls in the original show was a lot more interesting, the dead alpha girl and her estranged clique. 

They actually just went and named their racist homophobic demanding rich blond bitch Karen. Oh PLL, this is why I cant ever quit you.

The guy at the movie theater hitting on Tabby is giving real Ezra vibes, it it seems like they are actually going to show him as the creep that he is, instead of trying to make a grown ass man hitting on a teenager romantic. 

The new intro isn't as instantly iconic as the original, but its good, especially with the show going for extra horror.
