When brilliant video game maker Flynn (Jeff Bridges) hacks the mainframe of his ex-employer, he is beamed inside an astonishing digital world...and becomes part of the very game he is designing. In his mission through cyberspace, Flynn matches wits with a maniacal Master Control Program and teams up with Tron, a security measure created to bring balance to the digital environment.

The first Tron premiered 40 years ago (July 9, 1982).  While groundbreaking, with its extensive use of CGI, the film was perceived by Disney as a commercial disappointment due to its modest first-run box office take.  The film's gross may have been higher, had Disney not decided to move up Tron's release date from December 1982 to July 1982, where it ended up competing against the juggernaut that was E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.  However, the film went on to become something of a cult favorite and is now recognized as a pioneering classic. Disney+ "Unofficial" Trailer for Tron

It's been a while since I've watched the original Tron, so I don't have any detailed thoughts about the film, other than thinking that it was one of the most awe-inspiring films in terms of presenting a unique and immersive fantasy world, especially to a young kid.

Who wants Hedlund, Wilde, and Murphy back when you can have Jared Leto?  And who would want the director of Tron: Legacy to return, who's also been trying to get Tron 3 made for years?  It's not like Kosinski just directed one of the biggest movies ever, and has worked with Tom Cruise multiple times, and could have possibly gotten Cruise to cameo (especially with Cruise becoming primarily a sci-fi and action guy the last decade or so).  Best to go with the guy who did Pirates 5.

Disney was handed an easy W with a 3rd Tron, but they've apparently decided they want to go the massive L way.
