X-Files Episode Elimination Game

Recommended Posts

With five votes, the full moon fear monster is next off the list, followed by Donnie Pfaster and John Lee Roche.  Those two are tied for the next slot, both having received four votes of the exact same weight.

We're down to the top ten:

Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)
The Eves (Eve)
Eugene Victor Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)
Duane Barry (Duane Barry and Ascension)
Mrs. Paddock (Die Hand Die Verletzt)
Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)
Eddie Van Blundht (Small Potatoes)
Leonard Betts (Leonard Betts)
Maurice and Lyda (How the Ghosts Stole Christmas)
Alfred Fellig (Tithonus)

Vote for your next three.

Yikes, this is really getting hard; these characters are all quite interesting to me in one way or another, whether they entertain me, make me think "Well, that's not something you see on TV every day," make me feel sorry for them or give me a nice case of the creeps.

This pains me, but they're in such good company that they wind up on the bottom of the top ten for me:

Alfred Fellig

Duane Barry

Leonard Betts

Mrs. Paddock (Die Hand Die Verletzt)
Alfred Fellig (Tithonus)

Duane Barry (Duane Barry and Ascension)

I screwed up my vote the first time.  Bastet, if you'd already marked it down, I hope you see it's changed.

I hadn't thought of it before but there's sad lack of female villains/MotW in the all stars round.

Yeah, it's a typically androcentric list; one of the many reasons the votes for Mrs. Paddock are killing me.

I screwed up my vote the first time.  Bastet, if you'd already marked it down, I hope you see it's changed.

Nope, I didn't see it until now, so you're all set.

Yeah, I haven't worked out all the specifics of my top five yet (or even my top ten), but she is definitely up there.  She's fantastic in her own right, and even more so for being a character not often seen on TV.

An “accidental” miscount is certainly tempting, as saying goodbye to Mrs. Paddock before the top five is far more disappointing than any game should be, but she got just enough votes to go out this round.

Out first with six votes is Duane Barry, followed by Leonard Betts with four.  Mrs. Paddock’s three votes were weighted just a hair higher than Alfred Fellig’s, so she’s first, but we’re going to kick him off as well in order to get down to six characters.

Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)
The Eves (Eve)
Eugene Victor Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)
Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)
Eddie Van Blundht (Small Potatoes)
Maurice and Lyda (How the Ghosts Stole Christmas)

Vote for three in order to determine our three finalists.

And all y'all are making me sad about Maurice and Lyda.  I retract my kumbaya.

Eddie Van Blundht (Small Potatoes)

Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)

Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)

I really struggled between Modell and Tooms, but Tooms wins out emotionally for me b/c he's our first MOTW.  Darn sentiment.

Three villains received five votes each, and with weighted voting they are out in this order:  Maurice and Lyda, Eddie Van Blundht, and Luther Lee Boggs.

Damn; I really wanted Maurice and Lyda to be in the top five.  Coming on the heels of Mrs. Paddock, I'm quite bummed.

Okay, time to vote your pick for the most-interesting villain of the week:

The Eves (Eve)
Eugene Victor Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)
Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)

Link to comment

Another vote for the Eves.

Modell is just about perfect as a villain, but so are they, and there's just a little something extra that puts them over the edge for me.

Tooms would probably be my sixth -- three through five are made up of Mrs. Paddock, Maurice and Lyda, and Boggs in some order.  But they're all tangled up really close together; they're all so interesting, it's hard to separate them into ranks.

Indeed, we have a three-way tie for first place, each of the top three having received two votes.  So, our final ranking of the villains of the week is as follows:

1. The Eves (Eve)
Eugene Victor Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)
    Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)
4. Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)
5. Eddie Van Blundht (Small Potatoes)
6. Maurice and Lyda (How the Ghosts Stole Christmas)
7. Alfred Fellig (Tithonus)
8. Mrs. Paddock (Die Hand Die Verletzt)
9. Leonard Betts (Leonard Betts)
10. Duane Barry (Duane Barry and Ascension)
11. Donnie Pfaster (Irresistible)
      John Lee Roche (Paper Hearts)
13. Full moon fear monster (X-Cops)
14. Terri and Margi (Syzygy)
      Ronnie Strickland (Bad Blood)
16. The mothman creature (Detour)
17. Jenn (Je Souhaite)
18. Morris Fletcher (Dreamland)
19. Puppet, the bellhop (Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose)
20. Henry Weems’ good luck (The Goldberg Variation)
21. Greg Pincus (Folie a Deux)
22. Soul eater (The Gift)
23. Tommy Conlon (Scary Monsters)
24. Jesus slug (Roadrunners)
25. Oliver Martin (Sunshine Days)
26. Erwin Lukesh (4-D)
27. Reptile creature Herman Stites (Alone)
28. Dr. Jack Preijers (Audrey Pauley)

Thanks for playing, everyone.  What’s next?  Taryn had suggested a ranking of the mytharc villains, so if she’d like to take that on it would be a fairly quick game.  We also talked about favorite quotes and favorite M/S moments.  Those would probably best be done by season, but would need to be based on nominations.

In the interim, feel free to post your own personal top ten ranking for comparison.

Here’s what I came up with for my top ten.  It’s subject to change at whim, really.

The Eves (Eve)
Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)
Mrs. Paddock (Die Hand Die Verletzt)
Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)
Maurice and Lyda (How the Ghosts Stole Christmas)
Eugene Victor Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)
Eddie Van Blundht (Small Potatoes)
Leonard Betts (Leonard Betts)
Donnie Pfaster (Irresistible)
Ronnie Strickland (Bad Blood)

Then I took a stab at ranking the rest:

Duane Barry (Duane Barry and Ascension)
John Lee Roche (Paper Hearts)
Terri and Margi (Syzygy)
Alfred Fellig (Tithonus)
Henry Weems’ good luck (The Goldberg Variation)
The mothman creature (Detour)
Morris Fletcher (Dreamland)
Puppet, the bellhop (Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose)
Jenn (Je Souhaite)
Full moon fear monster (X-Cops)
Greg Pincus (Folie a Deux)

But that’s where I cut off, as I don’t know any of the other characters on the list.

I compiled mine from all the files rather than just our all stars, though those outside the game ended up in the bottom cheating zone anyway.

1. Mrs. Paddock (Die Hand Die Verletzt)

2. Tooms (Squeeze and Tooms)

3. Donnie Pfaster (Irresistible)

4. The Eves (Eve)

5. Leonard Betts (Leonard Betts)

6. Eddie Van Blundth (Small Potatoes)

7. Robert Patrick Modell (Pusher)

8. Luther Lee Boggs (Beyond the Sea)

9. Terri and Margi (Syzygy)

10. Virgil Incanto (2Shy)

10. Gerry Schnauz (Unruhe)

10. Cecil L'Ively (Fire)

Honorable mentions: Alfred Fellig (Tithonus), phosphorescent bugs (Darkness Falls), underground fungus (Field Trip), Greg Pincus (Folie a Deux), paraplegic Indian beggar butt genie man (Badlaa)

None of those who didn’t make the top three of their season would crack my top ten, but they’d definitely replace some from this list in my top twenty.  Opening it up to all VOTW, the second half of my top 20 would look like this instead:

Duane Barry (Duane Barry and Ascension)
John Lee Roche (Paper Hearts)
Terri and Margi (Syzygy)
Alfred Fellig (Tithonus)
Henry Weems’ good luck (The Goldberg Variation)
Gerry Schnauz (Unruhe)
Bettie the talking tattoo through Ed Jerse (Never Again)
Virgil Incanto (2Shy)
Flukeworm (The Host)
Phosphorescent bugs (Darkness Falls)

What if rather than just mytharc villains, we list out supporting cast/regulars?   That could include both the bad (CSM, Krycek), the good (Skinner, Doggett, Reyes, Lone Gunmen), the questionable (all the informants).

So many characters, so few baddies! Good thing we're doing general supporting and not just mythology villains. Nice job, queequeg. No one else springs to mind. The first few rounds could be five eliminations so we get some out of the way.

Link to comment

Should I organize them in any specific way you think?  Alphabetical by first name?  last name?   I don't mind posting the rounds and keeping tabs unless someone else wants to do it.

Anyone else have any names they want added?   Suggestions?

Link to comment

Alphabetical would be great, so people are easy to find (and there's no implication that those nearer the top of the list are better than those below them).

So what will we be voting on -- most interesting again?

Is the Syndicate guy who kind of mumbles and has bad teeth on here?  I don't know his name.
