‘Agatha All Along’ Submits as Comedy Series for Awards Season, Hinting That More Seasons Could Come (EXCLUSIVE)

Under the banner of Marvel Television Studios, the hit new spin-off series “Agatha All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn, will be submitted in the comedy categories for the upcoming awards season, including the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and next year’s Emmy race, Variety has learned exclusively. The move aligns “Agatha” in a competitive lineup, as it will face acclaimed comedies like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” FX’s “The Bear” and HBO/Max’s “Hacks.”

This decision places Hahn in the running against heavyweights such as Jean Smart, Quinta Brunson, and Ayo Edebiri — who have each won the TV comedy actress race for their respective shows over the past three years. For Hahn, who’s never been nominated for a Globe, a mention could be pivotal as she seeks to make a mark at next year’s Emmys ceremony.

I'm not sure why it's on YouTube and not Disney+

This is definitely odd. It popped up in my YouTube feed and I immediately checked Disney+ to find it there because I'd rather watch without ads, but it was nowhere to be found on D+. I went back to YT to watch, annoyed that I'd have to watch with ads, but there weren't any. 😲

It's a great episode of Assembled, BTW. The segment about set construction and decoration is very interesting. The absolute joy of the actors being able to work on a fully practical set is very apparent. You can see how it made an impact on their performances.

Yeah the making off was great.

I was reminded of the breakdown Ian McKellen had during the filming of the Hobbit, when he couldn't take solely acting against a green screen anymore, never even seeing his co-stars. (This is the best video I can find, there used to be better ones, but they seem to be lost.)

But I was reminded of it, because here it seems to have been the complete opposite. All the actors actually became so close, they called themselves a coven and I thuroughly believe that wasn't just some marketing spiel. Because shortly after wrapping, Aubrey Plaza moved in with Patti LuPone and Patti made her soup every day. Also most of the effects were practical. I noticed during the show, but a lot of them I didn't even think about, because they were just so well done. I only thought about them when they were pointed out during the making off. That also must help the actors a lot to get into the spirit of things.

The parts about the balad were very interesting. I still can't get it out of my head. Those two composers are pure evil. But I guess we knew that since the time they wrote "let it go". Love them and what they do.

Why Kathryn Hahn was so game to play a witchy woman in ‘Agatha All Along’
By Max Gao   Nov. 26, 2024

In the summer of 2021, a few months after “WandaVision” premiered to acclaim, Hahn learned that Schaeffer was developing a continuation of Agatha’s story. In their earliest conversations, Hahn and Schaeffer knew they wanted to maintain the character’s “acerbic, sarcastic, self-involved” demeanor while placing her in a position where she begrudgingly needs to form a coven to travel the fabled “Witches’ Road” and reclaim the power that Wanda had stripped of her at the end of “WandaVision.”
*  *  *
In the process, “Agatha” serves as an origin story of sorts for the wicked witch. The show reveals that Agatha’s nihilistic malevolence stems from her tortured relationship with her mother, who told her she was inherently and irredeemably evil and tried to kill her with her own coven. She also feels tremendous shame and guilt over being unable to save her son, Nicky, whose life she had attempted to extend by killing other witches. A master of communicating inner turmoil with a single freighted look, Hahn is able to offer gripping, albeit fleeting, windows into Agatha’s vulnerability.

Speaking again by phone a few days after the “Agatha” finale — which ends with Agatha sacrificing her life and agreeing to act as a kind of spiritual guide to Wanda’s son, Billy a.k.a. Wiccan (Joe Locke), as he searches for his missing twin brother — Hahn insists that she has yet to have any conversations about her future in the MCU.

“Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky. I think they do make a great team. Of course, I love this part and I love Joe Locke madly, and we’ll see what the future holds,” Hahn says. “In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play.”

15 Agatha All Along (Disney+)
...
The words “Kathryn Hahn in a leading role” are enough to get us watching just about anything — and Hahn, in her second turn as witch Agatha Harkness, surpassed even our highest expectations with her relentlessly funny, yet surprisingly tender, portrayal. But Disney+’s WandaVision spinoff also made room for a compelling new coven (played by one of the year’s most stacked ensembles), a promising addition to the Marvel universe (via Joe Locke’s Teen), a bittersweet love story, and more of the inventive, format-breaking storytelling that EP Jac Schaeffer first gave us in WandaVision. Should the opportunity arise, we’d gladly take another trip down, down, down the Witches’ Road. — Rebecca Iannucci
