'This Is Kingpin': Original Daredevil Series Showrunner Recalls Fighting for Vincent D'Onofrio Casting

Vincent D'Onofrio in the role of Wilson Fisk is a casting choice that was immediately embraced by Daredevil fans. For Steven S. DeKnight, who served as the showrunner for the first season of Daredevil, he knew from the star that D'Onofrio was perfect for the part, but the fantasy casting almost fell through.

"We wanted to make sure the casting was right," DeKnight said. "I had sleepless nights over trying to cast Wilson Fisk, Kingpin, and my feeling was, there was only one person that could do it, and that was Vincent D'Onfrio. And I remember telling [executive producer] Jeph Loeb, I sent him a picture of Vincent with a shaved head on the internet, and I said, 'Come on. There's nobody else that can do this. This is Kingpin.' And Jeph said, 'Yeah, yeah, we love him, but he's way too expensive. He was on Law & Order, he makes like a million dollars an episode. We'll never get him.'"

He continued, "But, it turns out, a couple of months later, our casting director, Laray Mayfield, was personal friends with him. And she said, 'Well, let me just check and see if there's any interest.' And it turns out Vincent was a huge Daredevil fan, a huge comic book fan of Daredevil, and he said, 'Yeah, I'd love to do it. Look, we'll work something out on the price.'"

"Charlie Cox was Joe Quesada's brain child," he explained. "He had seen him years ago in a movie and said, 'That's Matt Murdock.' And he was right. Charlie came in and just killed it."

I always do that, I basically regard The Defenders as Daredevil season 2.5, makes for a pretty coherent storyline (except for the retconning of The Hand/The Chaste/Madam Gau that started in Iron Fist

My first time through the Defenders saga I concluded that season 3 of Daredevil was the finest story run Marvel had. Doing a partial re-watch now as I await Born Again at 13 hours it really dragged in places and I can't see how beyond over excitement anyone binged the 13 hours. But it ended o very well

Watching an episode a week wouldn't work either. I think the Andor format where they released the story arcs in packs of three, or two in  Daredevil's case might be the best way to watch at least the past Netflix releases.

Since they have canonized Netflix they have a lot to clear up in the coming episodes of Born Again. 

At the end we have Kingpin getting arrested again for multiple murders and all seems good, but by the time of Hawkeye he is out and maybe not as big as a threat but still a gangster. Echo suggest that he was out during the Blip, as was Daredevil but both men had decided on limited but not total war on each other. And I doubt he is still taking 25% from all organized crime

Meanwhile Bullseye was being treated with an Iron Fist comics super medal and not the Black Panther super medal. All evidence points to a different super medal from The Eternals coming for the mutant introduction to the MCU.

I feel in the confusion of the blip kingpin might be able start his rise to Mayor.

Kingpin you mean. Bullseye is getting a 6 million dollar spine. Perhaps the murder cases fell apart due to witnesses blipping away. But what we have seen of the two from other shows there seems to be a ceasefire in Matt's war.

Yes I did mean Kingpin. i changed it.

I imagine there would be a lot of confusion, but also lots of work for cops, lawyers, lots of looting and reorganizing. I’m guessing things will be different.

Right now everything is pointing to that after the fanatics base failures of Secret Invasion, She-Hulk and The Marvels K.E.V.I.N sacked the showrunners,  ordered hard right rudder for the franchise and put the Netflix Defenders saga veterans in charge of the half completed Daredevil

I assume they originally gave DD 18 episodes so it could be an anthology show for the street level heroes during the Blip and then figured out that was not what people wanted, particularly as Foggy and Karen would be blipped. But that is a guess.
