Don Cheadle will star in the series, reprising the role of James “Rhodey” Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine. Yassir Lester was the head writer for another show that Don Cheadle was the lead actor for, “Black Monday” on Showtime.

Armor Wars tells the story of what Rhodey does when some of Tony Stark’s tech falls into the wrong hands.

When asked about Armor Wars and the most exciting part of playing Rhodey, Don Cheadle said that the most exciting part is "yet to come" (now that Rhodey is "untethered" from Tony Stark)...

I hope the bad guy is either Justin Hammer (who never officially died or even got arrested on screen) or (spoilers for Falcon and the Winter Soldier)

Spoiler

Sharon Carter aka the Power Broker. Because it seems to me like Stark tech is at least as worthy of being stolen for supervillain uses as the super soldier serum.

Come to think of it, Stark tech being stolen was the main plot driver in Iron Man 1-3 as well as arguably Avengers 2, so it’ll be interesting to see a fresh take on it. Hell, just doing Armor Wars with Rhodey at the core instead of Tony should make it different from the various Armor Wars stories in the comics.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Marvel Shakes Up ‘Armor Wars’: Don Cheadle Series Now Being Developed As a Movie

Marvel Studios has shaken up its Armor Wars project, and now what was to have been a series for Disney+ will be redeveloped as a feature film.

The move essentially pushes back the title further down the development slate.

Sources say the studio was committed in getting the story told the right way and in that process realized that a feature was better suited for the project. Like all Marvel movies, it is intended for a theatrical release.

Don Cheadle, who is reprising his longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes, AKA War Machine, remains on board to star. Yassir Lester, who was acting as head writer on the series, will remain as its feature scribe.

Marvel Explains Why Armor Wars Morphed From a Series to an MCU Film

Marvel Studios executive Nate Moore explained why the plan for Armor Wars to be a Disney+ television series was altered.

Marvel recently announced that the Don Cheadle-led Armor War would jump from being a streaming show to a theatrical movie, leaving some fans wondering about the reasons behind the choice. In an interview with The Town Podcast, Moore explained why a change was necessary, revealing that though Marvel initially envisioned Armor Wars as a television show, the project expanded past it. "There were some great ideas that were coming out for that show, but that, to be quite honest, felt too big for that show," said Moore.

According to Moore, budget also played a big part in the decision to make a movie. "Our Disney+ shows are awesome, and we love them, but the budgets are not the same as the features, that's not secret," he said. "And when you're talking about a show that wants to be about seeing all the cool armors, and Don Cheadle interacting with all these armors, and the legacy of Tony Stark, that became cost-prohibitive to do as a show."

By making the project a feature, Moore explained, the studio could get into "some of the beautiful imagery" from publishing and have "an Armor Wars run." Additionally, the team wanted to "leverage the ideas of that movie that affect other movies down the line," which became a determining factor in making Armor Wars into a film.

Don Cheadle acts with Samuel L. Jackson for the first time in Secret Invasion

He's also got another project in the works: Secret Invasion will help set up Armor Wars, a planned standalone film that's all about Rhodey. Cheadle is tight-lipped about what that project will entail — or when we might see it — but he says he's excited to uncover new sides of a character he's played for so long.

"The fun part about it is that we're going to continue to explore Rhodey and — in some ways for the first time — get to see what makes him tick," Cheadle explains. "We understand his physical challenges, but we haven't really yet dug into a lot of his emotional and psychological [challenges]."
