Getting the Verdict Early: Spoiler (and book) talk

Here's a spoiler thread because I guess we'll need one.

You can talk about:

  • Things mentioned in reviews (because they've seen pretty much of all of the episodes) that have yet to be addressed on the screen.
  • The books in case the show overlaps with the books.
  • Other versions of Perry if you think the show is hinting they might go down a similar path as other adaptations have taken.

About that last one, if you want to talk about the Raymond Burr series specifically and it has nothing to do with this show, you can take it to the Perry Mason thread for that show.

It's not so hard to guess what happened. The wife knew her husband's father was rich and gave him some money to start a business. The wife has an affair with some guy who works at an alligator farm. She says her baby likes turtles so she has a reason to go there and see the guy. The wife wanted her husband's father to give them more money so she and the alligator guy stage the kidnapping. The alligator guy, wife, and baby plan to run off together a little while after they get their share of the ransom. The people who help him plan the kidnapping screw it up and accidentally kill the baby. If the baby hadn't died, this wouldn't have been made public and the police would have never been involved. The police officer who helped in the kidnapping kills everybody involved. The wife, husband, and husband's father are members of a radio megachurch who refuse to let the tragedy of the kidnapping quietly die out until justice has been served. Alligator guy was the one who fell off the building head first and the crooked police kidnapper tried to cover that up with a shotgun blast and suicide note.

Perry meets with the cat lady who says Emily talks on the phone all the time - and was currently talking on the phone when Perry was with her - but to who?  George, her lover was already dead, correct?  Or do I have this wrong somehow?

Also, the two goons refer to George as the "killer" as if the death of the child was not an accident at all.

I think the church or perhaps Baggerly senior's wife were involved somehow.

Della doesn't think Emily killed Charlie and Mason doesn't think Matthew killed Charlie.  I feel the show wouldn't present these two characters as having poor instincts.

When he was alive Emily was talking to George. Her poor husband slaving away at the grocery store all day while his wife spends all day yacking on the phone with another man. After George died, Emily had been calling George's number, but nobody has been answering.

So the short answer is Emily is just listening to the phone ring and ring and ring.

I think Emily told George her husband was rich and George did it on his own (Emily was not in on it) with those 2 cops who he in some way knew. The cops screwed it up and they are now framing Emily and her husband for the whole thing.
