Scarlett45 April 11, 2020 Share April 11, 2020 Quote So.... I went ahead and watched the series since I requested this, and my urge to talk about it has waned. So unless someone else is interested, Isuppose there's no reason to create the topic. @Jane Tuesday I am watching and enjoying the show quite a bit. Currently on episode 5, and I have to say Cartwright gave Martha the short end of the stick. I 100% understand he wasn’t going to leave his wife and it was just a thing (as did Martha) and I understand why she didn’t want to be be under his thumb and his mistress on a more permanent basis, but he should’ve been sending her a decent amount of money for Jenie as well as getting her that job. It was socially expected that if your mistress or “fling” became pregnant, as a “gentleman” you supported the child. Yes the child’s social status had more to do with whom the mother was but sending the mother money for the child’s basic upkeep was the bare minimum in this time period for a man of means. And Martha is a smart woman she should’ve taken the cash. I don’t think Mrs Cartwright had ill intentions towards Martha or Jenie (I do think she would’ve treated the girl well) but I also understand why Martha wanted to keep her child. A job at the home for unwed mothers would be an easier job for Martha than cleaning/serving at the club where she would likely to be sexually harassed by patrons and then get blamed for it. 1 Link to comment
Scarlett45 April 11, 2020 Author Share April 11, 2020 Quote The story of the invention of football and how it quickly rose to become the world's most popular game by crossing class divides. I needed something uplifting after Tiger King and I am enjoying some actors I know from other period pieces like Charlotte Hope (Game of Thrones, The Spanish Princess) and Niamh Walsh (Jamestown). Aliferously April 12, 2020 Share April 12, 2020 It's an okay series. Sort of a no hill climb storywise but entertaining enough. Everyone and everything is very clean looking for Victorian England. They even have electricity and nightlights. On episode two, and while it's weird now to see people crowding together (it's been a month and yet it seems like a very distant past) to watch/play soccer. Link to comment
OtterMommy April 13, 2020 Share April 13, 2020 I'm slowly working through this with my husband. It's kind of the perfect show for us--it's the history of his favorite sport for him and a period drama for me. I will admit it isn't the most exciting thing I've seen, which is probably why we're watching one episode a week instead of 1-2 episodes a night. Link to comment

Well we are almost to the Edwardian period, the wealthy were starting to get electricity in their homes during this time. As far as cleanliness that’s a design choice, I doubt our eyes (the general audience) would like to see dirty faces and hands of the actors. Looking at the beginning of professional soccer (in a period drama), just woah.... the most played sport in the world. 1 Link to comment
