I might not have been watching closely -- why did the terrorist couple kill the woman in Racine?

I think the woman in Racine had the nanny cam video of the VP yelling at his daughter. I thought it was funny how the trip to Racine from Washington and back seemed to take a couple of hours in show time.

I watched the first episode.  I think Eva Longoria is beautiful but she is a little over the top sometimes.  I feel like she's "acting" at times for the camera's sake, not being completely genuine, and putting the focus on herself more than the people she's talking to.  I hope that she works all that out as the episodes progress.  Also, neither my husband nor I heard her formally explain what a "Chilango" is, so I'm wondering if she ever did.  I sort-of figured it out in context but for several minutes we were scratching our heads.  I eventually had to Google it.

That said, I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would.  I don't know much about Mexico and I love its food so I'm finding this so far informative and interesting.   I'm still bummed that CNN chose to cancel "Searching for Italy".  It feels like this show was its replacement.  I hope Stanley turns up with a new season soon on another network.

I’m pretty sure she explained Chilango as a term for someone from Mexico City.

I’m sort of torn on this, based on the first episode. Eva is less serious and lacks some gravitas that Stanley had. Stanley seemed to have some expertise in Italian food where Eva seems more of a fan. While I know quite a bit about Italian food, I know a lot less about Mexico and Mexican food and while I’m learning stuff in this show, I’d appreciate a deeper dive than we’re getting.

  3. We semi binged this in three nights, finished last night. Lots to nitpick in the plot, including the whole crazy rationale for the original Metro bombing. Really disliked the female terrorist and the Chief of Staff, although not sure how much was the acting and how much the writing. Didn’t understand why “fuck” needed to be inserted in every other sentence for certain characters, other than you can’t do that on broadcast TV.

Still, the plot hooked us and it looks like they’ve left room for a sequel.

    Agree! She’s unwatchable.

Count me in too. She’s terrible and the show gives too much airtime to her relationship with the other assassin. Also not sure the Chief of Staff is believable. Otherwise, we’re enjoying the show, trying to ignore that the woods around DC suspiciously look like pine forests in Canada.

  5. Seems really odd to film two seasons back to back. I know it saves money, but I almost have to believe there’s something else going on. One justification would be that they want to broadcast a season during the winter, I guess. Otherwise, I don’t know.

I like the head to head idea.

I am not surprised. McHale isn't that likeable and in a comedy your leading person needs to be likeable to some degree.

The cast is good, but without many real name actors/actresses you have McHale and a cast of no names. Sadly you need some casting firepower to push a show.

I think the show is basically okay to watch but there doesn't seem to be much chemistry with the cast in the show.

The other alternative is to have excellent writing. A lot of comedies got their starts with casts of relative unknowns but took off due to the writing. However if you don’t have a good script, then you’ve got to have a cast people want to watch.

I guess they couldn't find any farmers to participate. These men are ranchers and cattle breeders. They are not farmers.

I can't wait to see how these women deal with being in the middle of nowhere with no malls, coffee shops, or nail salons.

My guess is that the producers thought dealing with cows and horses would make for better TV than viewers watching farmers planting soybeans and corn.

Unpopular opinion I guess but I thought this episode was horrible. It felt like it was written by a completely different writing team. A bunch of high schoolers trying to do a movie of the week. I actually cringed at some of the dialogue and acting. . If this schlock keeps up I’m out.

    Boring, predictable and preachy episode

  9. I found the real estate angle pretty ludicrous. It takes more than a couple of unsubstantiated crime reports to depress property values significantly. And even if they do, it takes a long time to recover from the effect. Its more like years, not months.

I’m hoping her cancer hasn’t come back.  Hopefully all will be well.

I saw somewhere that in the third hour, Jenna said Hoda was fine and dealing with a family medical issue, so it doesn’t sound like Hoda’s health. Probably mom, maybe a kid.

  11. I watched the LIV coverage on Saturday for about an hour. Some embarrassing glitches. The coverage started with no sound for the announcers on screen and ran for a couple of minutes before they cut to commercial. The picture froze during a tracking shot of a ball in flight and they had to cut to commercial.

It’s pretty much the same as their streaming coverage last year with better announcers. Still confusing and hard to follow, distracting graphics on the screen. You really can’t get into the “competition”. Maybe they’re aiming for the Tik-Tok generation.

I hope the Honda (or whatever it will be called) gets a better field next year, but I still found the playoff hole pretty exciting.

They advertise the Battle Royale choice as the one the judges will decide on. As for why there are no ties, we are to assume that the majority of the deliberations are hidden by the commercial break they do, so the decision is made off camera. (In reality, the producers/schedulers have probably got it all decided and tell who is supposed to win each night anyways so there is no real choice). As there are no prizes for this show beyond token trophies, it doesn't need to be as robust as true competition shows.

Just want to point out that despite the way it's edited to look like a live show, it's not a live show. They could be taking an hour to sort out the judging after a performance.

My guess is that Alfred Molina doesn't speak French.

While this is most likely the case, I also think they were trying to give us some flavor of a Quebecois culture while making the show accessible to audiences who did not want to spend the whole show reading subtitles.

I just borrowed one of the books from the library and am finding it a lot more enjoyable than the show.

The producers seem to pick the songs.  There's an interview on EW where she makes it clear they chose it.  "And "Fernando" came up as the song for me to sing, literally, I was on a plane heading from New York to Vegas, where I live, the day before."

Seemed really unfair, Medusa gets a very well known, upbeat song that is a fan favourite.  Debbie gets a slower song.  Even though there was the battle royale, when it comes to voting (assuming there even is audience voting and it's not rigged), the audience will remember being more entertained by the more upbeat song.

Not only is it a slower song, but it seemed to be taken at an unusually slow tempo. But any discussion of Debbie’s performances has to be tempered by the fact she was a last minute replacement. If she had more time to rehearse, she might have come across differently.

This French mystery crime show just started showing at our local PBS.  Astrid, an autistic woman who works in the library of the judicial police has an incredible memory, & assists the local police force in analyzing the files for ongoing investigations. She & the female commander, Raphaëlle have a special camaraderie that is quite wonderful (although the coroner, Fournier is my fave). A fascinating & very well done show - thankful for the subtitles. Apparently in its 4th season as it is quite popular.

Thanks for the tip about this show! I had never heard of it. We watched the first half of the 2 part “The Haunting” on our PBS station last night and really enjoyed it. Going to Amazon Prime for the first pilot episode, which we missed, but is apparently free there (other episodes require a PBS Masterpiece membership).
