What I hate about the side-by-side is that I find myself in deep empathy with the racers. I would hate to be on any of those arm and finger strength things as seeing out of the corner of my eye someone doing the same or worse or better.  For me it would be the ultimate distraction.

Speaking of, how did they resolve the guys sbs who both fell on the last obstacle. Mr. Cats was talking and distracting...sort of fitting, that.

They gave to the guy who got to the last obstacle the fastest, I think.

I noticed that it looked like the two women who raced side by side had times of 5-6 seconds in the first round, which means they likely fell on the first obstacle. Seems wrong that one of them gets to the semis, although she did do a decent job on the side by side.

That mystery was more interesting than the first one and didn't go in the direction I thought it would, but I'm not sure it really earned its resolution.  It just felt kinda out of left field.  Oh well, at least I was able to fit the show into the time slot I had by fast-forwarding past the singing.

I found the singing much more tolerable in the latest episode, but…I’d prefer that they devote the time to developing the plot more. I agree the resolution wasn’t really well earned. I think we needed more time with the podcaster to get a better picture of his personality.

  3. I would agree there are a lot of dramatic flaws in the show, but for me, the whole concept of the the Silo - what it is, how does function, how does society operate, why are they in there in the first place- was enough to keep me interested.

  4. I always thought, from watching numerous hijacking movies 🙂, that there was a risk of depressurizing the plane if a gunshot went through a window or the fuselage. Which might explain the reluctance to use bullets.

I was also wondering if there were air marshals on international flights (maybe not on a Dubai to London flight though).

Where do you go story wise after a public assassination attempt on a CIA Deputy Director? We have a case of too much rank is held by those doing field work.  The season must not be grabbing me because I missed Ryan  being relieved of his commission to go rogue. And two commandos fighting through an alert security force had it much too easy. And jack doesn't seem to have anything lingering from his back injury.

Although this series should be in my wheelhouse, I have found the last two seasons really uninvolving. It seems to hit all the action points, but the rest of the plotting is connect-the-dots, and sometime even those don’t connect. I blame the writing, and maybe the editing.

  6. Just catching up on this show. I thought the first two episodes were terrific, the third one a bit less so. It seemed to me like Elba’s actions at the end of the episode were out of character for someone we’ve seen to be very calculating. He’s relying on a retired army officer and teenage girl to confirm that the bullets were blanks. Seems shaky to me (even if true).

With Rickie Fowler's win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, what was a four-year streak of winless results has come to an end.  I wasn't surprised that he fell out of the Top 160, only to return to within the Top 40 not too long ago.  It is surprising that he only has a half dozen wins on the PGA tour.  Not a shocker for the best player without a major title, but I though he'd have more (but not much more)

I can remember a gossipy article a couple of years ago which stated that a number of pros were upset at the media attention and especially endorsement opportunities that Rickie got, feeling his on course performance, after a decent start to his career, didn’t really merit them.

  8. It’s not clear to me whether the Founders banned all technology, or if at least some of the bans and restrictions were later responses to the rebellion that has been mentioned in the show.

  9. About the only thing I can figure is that the idea of a green landscape gives people hope for the future that someday they, or their children, will be able to return to the outside world when it’s safe. To constantly gaze at the bleak barren landscape might be terribly depressing and lead people to give up hope.

Was that on one of those "bonus scene" re-runs that they always label "NEw" on my cable guide?

If so, I missed it.  Care to clue me in on what business she was hawking?

The “real” new episode this week had only 2 cases (Wiccan cyst, personal trainer lipoma). The third slot was Dr. Lee’s friend testing some facial goop on her.

Good episode. I did not see that twist coming.

What was that tall stuff beyond the Silos? Mountains? The remains of buildings?

What happens when they run our of suits?

Hope next season we see some more Silos. Do some of the other Silos know about each other's existaece? Are there societies different?

Pretty sure the tall stuff was a city’s downtown, maybe Atlanta since we saw the Georgia book in an earlier episode.

Good reveal of the other Silos. I don’t understand the point of the fake green trees/blue sky visuals. You’d think they would make people more prone to unrest rather than being satisfied with their situation. It seems like the visuals on the hard drive were just a misinterpretation  of what was going on outside.

Yay, I was right about Zoe!  [Pats self on back. Ow.]

I need to pat myself too. When they said she had been home schooled and hadn’t gotten her vaccinations last week, the light went on. As a result, I guess I found the plot a little too simplistic, and was hoping for some additional twist. Didn’t need the singing at the end, either.

Hopefully since we got some backstory out of the way, the next episodes will be more case focused.

Highlight of the night, which you might have missed if you blinked

Flex LeBrek's husband was running and she was at home cheering for him.  The film showed a brief view of their rather new baby. A lovely picture of Momma and baby.  Husband didn't make it to the wall but was good enough to go forward.

Two things: Obstacle 2 was not the killer tonight as they watched last weeks and learned how to move to dismount it.

Once again the three girls shown at then end came from when I dozed off or somewhere and two competed in the run. You know, I used to hate calling young women "girls".  But the noun seems to fit here.

In my recollection, they showed the runs of the first two female qualifiers. We didn’t see the third, or the two who were in the run-off.

  14. It's interesting that the CT course had been redone in the 80's to PGA TPC specifications yet it seems more outmoded that many older courses.

I am personally in favor of limiting equipment and I think the balls would be the easiest to tinker with.

  15. I think the first time we’ve seen a gun.

My random thought last night was what do Silo-ers do in their spare time. No video, TV, films. Books seem unlikely.

  16. It's weird, because it destroys the illusion, on almost all these types of shows, that the only people in the room are the patient and the doctors and nurses. Of course we know better, but you would think they would edit the question out. Almost seems like sloppiness in editing.

and Late to the party once again.

I started watching The Bear.  up through episode 4.

it seems to me that there are way too many people in this "small" sandwich shop.  there's the veggie lady, the meat guy, the baker, the sous chef, obviously Carmy and loud mouth Richie (why is he there?) and who are the others????  its not like i'm seeing anyone washing dishes.

why in the world are they making their own bread?  every sandwich shop i know buys their rolls from an outside baker.  well, same with the deserts too.

hearing about how long it took to make that one plum desert in Carmy's prior restaurant, i sortof understand why those restaurants charge so damn much.

Is there a real need to berate the sous chef and staff like that one guy (head chef i presume) was doing to Carmy in the 5 star restaurant?  what is the point?

omg the xanax in the ecto punch was hilarious.  how the hell did the entire bottle fall in?

Even later to the party and about half way through the first season, I don’t get the set up either. The place seems to be a takeout Italian beef place, yet we have the staff in the back organized and working as if this is a fine dining establishment. Veal stock for sandwich gravy? Making their bread? I don’t get it.

  18. I wonder if these changes are financially driven. We're now down to one location instead of the traveling roadshow, less resources devoted to filming of background stories (although most of the teens don't have much of a backstory worth filming), and filming two seasons at once.

I don't think it has, which is a shame.  IIRC, there also used to be a USA vs. The World or something like that, but I don't remember seeing it this year.

LOL, yes, that's a great point.  I think I've just started tuning them out when they start yelling like that (which is pretty much all of the time).  This show has become something I have on in the background, rather than something I sit and watch.

One advantage of the shorter format is that we have far fewer of the backstories, which I appreciate.  OTOH, the last "ninja vs. ninja" race this time featured people I hadn't seen before, so it was hard to be invested in the outcome.

It's odd that such a successful show (or so it seems) keeps tinkering with its format year over year like this.

I think the USA vs. the World might have been pre COVID.

While I was a person who complained about too much backstory/sobstory in the past, I’m finding this season’s format disorienting and uninvolving. Just faceless people running the course. It’s exacerbated by the youth movement, where we have little or no history with the competitor. How do you know who to root for? There was almost a family sense about the Ninjas that seems to be disappearing.
