I'm really getting a kick out of this show, although it feels very soap-opera.

I wonder, however, about this trend of casting people of color in period dramas (and I hope this isn't too heavy a topic to broach). It's becoming more and more common with shows like Sanditon and Bridgerton. I get the desire to cast with diversity. It's probably frowned upon to have an all-white cast on a show these days. And I do think the race issue is addressed better here than it was in Sanditon. But where I feel a bit uncomfortable is the notion of downplaying the significance of racism in the 1700s, pretending it wasn't THAT big of a deal. Which of course, it was. You don't make racism go away by pretending there was no racism.

I agree. I would draw a distinction between a Bridgerton, which I can accept as romantic fantasy, and adaptions of classic literature, which we often read and watch to reflect on mores and manners in earlier historical eras. Colorblind casting really distorts this.

Before someone says, “what about Hamilton?”, I’d also draw a distinction vs. stage productions and Shakespeare, which I think are more interpretive. I have no problem with Denzel Washington playing Macbeth, or an all female production of Julius Caesar, for example.

  2. I haven’t read the book, but oddly one thing that struck me in the first episode was “boy, they must have quite a clothing manufacturing industry in that silo for people to be wearing such a variety of clothing”. Jumpsuits would have made a lot more sense.

Richard Madden is great in everything he does.  I do wish he had been able to keep his natural Scottish accent, which I heard slip through at least once.  His American accent sounds off.  If Priyanka is allowed to keep her natural accent, why couldn't he keep his?  Isn't Citadel supposed to be a global network with agents from all over the world?  Why did his character necessarily have to be American?

My guess is that they thought a primarily American audience would relate better to an American lead character. This way, you get the Brits to watch because he’s Richard Madden and a lot of Americans watch because he’s playing an American.

Fun start. Is Sophia a daughter of a slave in the book? I found her manicure distracting, would those kind of nails been historically accurate?

In the book, I believe she is the daughter of a local squire.

  5. Sounds like there will be a third season…..

Stanley was interviewed at length in a segment this morning on NBC by Willie Geist. It covered his life and career and a bit about the success of Searching For Italy. Towards the end(maybe badly edited), Stanley mutters, “we’ll know more in a week or so, it’ll be somewhere”. Willie clarified back in the studio by saying, “stay tuned for news about an upcoming third season of Searching For Italy”. (Quotes are from the best of my recollection)

Here’s hoping it’s not going to be on a premium streaming channel, like Peacock. I’m a little suspicious with NBC promoting the show.

I turned the second episode on this morning. How in the world do some of people work as chefs? One woman didn't know how to use a KitchenAid stand mixer. She couldn't get her dough hook in, then was complaining the bowl was moving around. She didn't have the bowl locked into the base! Then another has her skillet catch on fire. Her solution - fan it with a kitchen towel. Yeah, giving a fire more oxygen is a good idea - not! You put a lid on it. Geez.

Yes, the problem with the Kitchenaid was a mystery. I only wondered if there really was something wrong with it, or if Euro models lock differently? I only say that because I think both teams had an issue with it. Otherwise, there’s no excuse.

Yes, I’m glad the patient with diabetes seemed to have improved health.  I do wish they had explained that he was Type II, not Type I.

Pretty sure Dr. Lee mentioned briefly that he was Type II at some point in the show.

Personally I think that the killer was using Percy to find the other orphans until Percy didn't become useful anymore.  The killer defiantly has to be the regular that would paint Lucy's nails.  I wonder if he kept her alive long enough till she had Will then he dumped her and dumped Will in the trashcan.

I also wonder if the killer now might think he might possibly be Will's father and this is a way to get Will's attention?

My question is the time gap. Weren’t the first killings in the 80’s? Has to be at least about 35 years ago. I guess it might work if the killer was in his teens or early twenties. Otherwise I think the 80’s killer would be too old today to be physically overpowering today’s victims.

  9. Yeah, episode 2 was an improvement over the first. I would have liked a little more clarity on why the second team was worse than the first, other than the lasagne, since they seemed to like the second group’s pasta more. I don’t know why someone would try to make lasagne in less than an hour.

Interesting to see how the leader of the first team, who runs a restaurant kitchen, took control and doled out tasks vs how the second team organized themselves.

  10. I thought episode three was an improvement on the first two, with a nice plot twist at the end to keep me watching. Apple phones sure get a workout on this show. My pet peeve is constantly having to rewind and freeze episodes in order to walk up to the screen to read texts (although there are worse shows than this). An aspect of modern life that TV doesn’t handle that well, IMO.

  11. I don’t know, we thought it dopey fun and not the type of movie that stands up to a lot of analysis. Forgettable, but definitely not the worst movie of the year.

There is way too much backstory in this show now. I don't need to dwell on how awful the patients' lives are. A bit of context is fine but an hour for only three patients is ridiculous.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but hasn’t the show always been three patients? I do think they’re showing more backstory with less time on the procedures than they used to.

We DVR it and skip at least half of the backstory for most patients.

    I wish it wasn't Alex.

I don’t watch a lot of FN anymore and have never seen her in a judging role, but I found her extremely annoying.

I thought the first elimination extremely bizarre. The guy who can’t finish his dish and serves pureed beans and some kale isn’t even in the bottom two? I was shocked they sent home the guy who overcooked his lamb a bit. Might have put me off watching the rest of the series.

I can see that.  But I supposed I was impressed that Alicia was playing keyboards and I do pay attention to tone and whether or not folks are hitting the notes.  I understand nerves but I like consistency and voices that seem to know/understand how to sing and even if someone is a good entertainer and can get the crowd into the performance, I'm still going to remember the technical aspects of it.

I know they brought up the keyboard playing on the show, but when I was watching, I was wondering, is this real or is it fake and is she just miming playing the keyboard? Since they perform to a backing track, I don’t know how we could tell.

  15. I saw this comment from someone somewhere else, so I can’t claim credit for the thought, but it applies to me too. It seems this season I get a lot more of the musical references than I did last season. I don’t know if I am just more familiar with 1970’s musicals, or whether the writers are making more of an effort to create those references. Season one for the most part seemed to be more generic 40’s-50’s musical, without a lot of specificity (to me, anyway).

  16. Article today in the Sports section of the NY Times confirms they are filming a second season of Welcome to Wrexham. The article largely focuses on the success of the Notts County, who Wrexham are competing with for promotion this season. The producers have been meeting with Notts County to see how much they want to be featured in the upcoming season.

  17. I think if Woods was in a position to finish in the top 10, say, he might have tried to grit it out. But to torture himself with the amount of golf to be played today when he was barely above the cut line made no sense, IMO. He kept his streak going of cuts made. I’m not surprised at all that he WD.
