What kind of car is it? It was really cute. He'll probably get something else now that it's totaled.

I liked the show. The sister was cool.

I think the car was a Karmann Ghia, was made by Volkswagen as their sports car. Would check, but we deleted this off the DVR.

My girlfriend and I found the show sort of meh.

Let's talk body types for a minute or two.

So many of the exulted young ones look skinny.  The light weight doubtless helps them move fast through aerial stations.  Tall also helps and being a certain shortness is lethal (Bailey).

Too much muscle mass equals weight, and their finger muscles and wrists and elbow and shoulders get a hell of a workout.

Gil at least looks well muscles all over and is not skinny.  Nor was the winner.   I wonder if the young ones will bulk up in future years?

I’d guess that while the lack of muscle mass is an advantage in the regular competition and stages 1-3 in the Finals for the reasons you say,  Stage 4 is different. There you need more upper body muscle mass to haul yourself up the rope in 30 seconds. So it’s an interesting balancing act between the training and body type that gets you to stage 4 and where you have to focus to win $1 million.

  3. I rarely watch the US House Hunters, but tuned in last night since I am also somewhat familiar with the area and coincidentally commuted into NYC from Connecticut for about 5 years.

I agree there was no way they should have been looking at the west side of the Hudson that far north if they needed to get into the city daily. I checked the monthly fair pass on the train to Grand Central is almost $450 from Beacon. The other factor to keep in mind if you are commenting by rail is the need to build in a time cushion for delays, plus the time to get from Grand Central to wherever you work. If I were the teacher, I'd be looking for a local job immediately. The guy seemed to be involved in the theater, which if not a daily commute, I'd think would involve some late evenings in the city, which can be hard to manage with the commute as well.

I'm feeling a little sorry for Joe Moravsky.  He was such a prospect in his early years and now I wonder if he'll ever make it again.  The young'uns seem to be more likely to win everything.

Ninjas is really no different than sports like baseball, football, basketball, etc.  Athletes lose a step, get overtaken by younger competitors, and eventually have to retire.

The odd thing about the show is there seems to be a gap between the older competitors and the 15-18 year olds. Where are the competitors in their early to mid 20’s? I guess it has to do with a decision by production to change how they recruit contestants and stop open casting, among other things.

Yes, eventually entirely or mostly outdoor sports like golf and tennis are going to have to go with a mix of changing the season of certain tournaments when they don't want to change the location, and changing the location of certain tournaments when they don't want to change the season. But a summer golf tournament in Arizona, for example, will soon not be viable, and AZ will have to start hosting in winter instead.

PGA tournaments are not held in the summer in Arizona even now, they are held in the early spring. No one is playing in 100+ degrees.

A better golf comparison is something like the Fedex Championship, which was held in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago in ridiculous heat and humidity conditions, like this year’s US Open. Those Deep South tournaments may need to be relocated northwards.

  6. FWIW, confirmed by the NY Times, there is no AC when the roofs are closed at the Open. There is an air circulation system to keep moisture from accumulating on the courts, since closing the roof usually increases the humidity in the stadiums. There are openings in the walls for air flow from the outside, but you need breezes, and the last week has not been windy in NY. So the decision to close the roof due to heat is complicated. The other alternative would be to postpone the matches.

I like James Blake but his voice is annoying to my ears.  I'd love for Chris Eubanks to take his place.

And speaking of voices, Alexandra Stevenson just sounds ditzy.

Funny, I like Eubanks, but I prefer Blake.

I heard Stevenson and Shriver commenting on a women’s match together this week and the incessant chatting made me turn the sound off.

Did I miss where the top boss told Jessie that budgetary issues override everything else? I don't recall that being a major plot point in the last/Cassie seasons, but I could be wrong.

I don't really understand Sunny turning down the job, if he believed in the value of solving cold cases.

It might not be a budgetary issue, but people don’t usually get ahead by solving 40 year old cases. You get ahead by working on the priorities of your higher ups, which would usually be reducing current crime statistics.

Actually, I think it’s an awkward attempt to create tension in the show.

Too much domestic angst for me in this first episode, and I think after whatever the period of time since Cassie’s death (since there have already been two temporary DCIs, it must be a few months), Sunny should get over it, or get some counseling.

The lot where they usually film in Las Vegas was sold and is going to be turned into a baseball stadium.

I don't know if they will be able to continue filming there during the off season (are baseball games are still going on in June?), or if they have to find a new location. Even if they can secure the property for 4 days of filming a year, it will most likely be under construction next year making it necessary to get in 2 years worth of episodes now,

Baseball season runs April through October, if you make the playoffs. The Oakland A’s are trying to move to Vegas, but it hasn’t gotten final approval yet.

Interesting idea on why they are filming two seasons at once, but I don’t think it would be that hard to film somewhere else in Vegas or a different city.

Loretta calling Ben a fucking pig is sort of weird.  That's generally an insult to use if someone is being sexist, not just a general asshole.  What was their argument about?

If I closed my eyes, the language in this show sometimes could make me think I’m watching an episode of The Sopranos.

I've noticed it too.  She's been off this week too.  First Hoda said she was "enjoying a day off" and then said "she is on vacation." It does seem odd that she has a LOT of time off.

Right. Another day she was "under the weather". A week long vacation at the time of year is not unusual though.

Also, one aspect that's bothering me is the absence of any police in this season so far.  If this is a murder why don't we see evidence of a police investigation?  They included that in the first two seasons.  We did not even see the penthouse or theater taped off for a crime scene investigation.  Even if our crew are not suspects they usually have some interaction with the person or people working on the case.  And given how things went down in the first two seasons and how they are known by the police, one would think they would have some kind of contact with them.  Or they could just show us the police asking questions of anyone involved with the play.  So far the episodes seem to be veering too far away from the actual crime solving into other plots including aspects of our crew's lives and while some of that is OK I feel like so far the show is sidetracking itself too much from the investigation aspect.  Hopefully as the season goes on it will get back on track.

While I am enjoying the foray into musical theater and especially Martin Short this season, I do agree the balance is off and it doesn't seem very concerned with the mystery at all. The lack of any apparent police investigation is one aspect of this and is just weird. The musical rehearsals seem to have been going on for a while, so the case must have been investigated. Even if the conclusion was that it was accidental, it would be nice to know that, and the details of why.

One visit to the white room was more than enough.

Antigonish is a Mi’kmaq name meaning place where branches are torn off by bears seeking beechnuts or meeting place of five forked rivers.

It is also the title of a poem by Hughes Mearns that begins:

The other day upon the stair

    I met a man who wasn’t there

The poem is said to be about ghosts and dealing with one’s past.

Antigonish is also slang for a sex act that you don’t want to know about.

Thanks! I only knew it as a town and county in Nova Scotia, and couldn’t figure out what connection it might have to New Mexico or the show. Must be the poem.

  14. Not that I'm stalking the show or anything, but as a regular viewer, I've noticed that Savannah has been off for one mid-week day, seems like every week this summer. This morning is an example. Strikes me as odd, since it's not like having a long weekend.

  15. This show nails my sense of humor and 2 episodes in, I’m really liking it, although having lost my mother not so long ago, the bit with the ashes made me a little queasy.

I had been thinking, “boy, is this a low budget show with such a small cast”, then I read because it was filmed during the pandemic, groupings of actors, etc. were purposely kept small and distant.

Glad to hear there is a season 2.

Okay, so hear me out, but as a theatre person, I was annoyed at the scene where Loretta was doing all the silly accents for the Nanny at the first table read.

It just felt like a cheap laugh at the expense of the character, who had been established as someone terrific, talented, but overlooked, and of course as someone we could root for. Her introduction was just lovely.

I've worked in the theatre for almost 30 years on and off, and for her to immediately be THAT tone-deaf and unprofessional, right off the bat, earning the immediate hatred of the leading man, really bothered me.

There is no way someone in their first big Broadway break would do any of that. And I did not believe Loretta would do that, based on her intro.

I mean, yes, it's cute and we got to see Streep do her wonderful Streepy accent thing, but I just think it's bad writing in terms of the character and show.

    (Sorry. I overthink things.)

    Here's another possibility, just speculating.

At Loretta's audition, Oliver is the only person in the room. Maybe we are seeing her audition from his perspective, not objectively? Maybe he finds her attractive, maybe he's not the best judge of talent. Maybe that colors the way he sees her.

At the table read in front of a whole cast maybe we are seeing her the way she really is and why she hasn't gotten a lot of parts.

Or maybe it's just bad/cheap writing.

I wondered that too considering on the last show the patient was in the clinic without a mask (for a while the state still required them to wear a mask inside).

I thought I heard her say at the beginning of the season that masks were still required indoors in the clinic in California, so they would continue using the parking lot. I have no idea about current rules in CA or when the shows were filmed. Could have been filmed last year.
