  1. I found this Vulture article particularly interesting.

Shepherd's death instead felt like actual real life had crept too close to fiction. If behind-the-scenes drama motivated his death, as rumors suggest, does this constitute irresponsible storytelling? Did McDreamy — a beloved character on Grey's for 11 seasons — deserve to die like this for Dempsey's bad behavior?

  2. GoT doesn't kill characters this indiscriminately.

Don't they? I mean, if they don't have at least one per episode...it's not a GoT episode.

The mock GRRM tweet account congratulated her though.. So, maybe you're right.

The thing I hate is that lots of folks just love to say Shonda is a hack.  But she has revolutionized television in this era beginning with the early days of Grey's.  And now she owns a night in primetime, because her company and her people are that strong.  She has more shows in the works from her company, and quite frankly is one of the most successful producers in primetime in this era....and yet here we are, and someone compares her to freaking Donald Trump.

There is Empire because there was Shonda, Viola fucking Davis is on tv because of Shonda, Kerry Washington, Shonda.....all because of this woman who wrote characters you fell in love with (and have talked about for a decade and are crying about tonight) and she fucking built an empire where she took charge and ownership of her work..

So, sure, compare her to Trump, I assume you mean to dismiss her by this comparison, but I know she'll come out of this comparison on top every day. And the notion that she got "lucky", please, be better.

She's not a hack but she's not the most brilliant writer in TV history. Not even close to that. Do I respect her career? Sure but I'm not blindsided by believing that she changed TV all on her own. That's a selfish attitutde to take. Did she contributed to that? Sure but don't tell me that she is the godly woman that people pretend her to be.

My comparison to Donald Trump was to make the point that money and power doesn't make anyone the best thing ever. Many people have been able to accomplish that and they're not necessarily the center of creativity and inventions. Not that she is horrifying human that Donald Trump is.

I don't watch Empire, so good? Does she even write that show?

And yes, she got lucky. Many shows are greater than Grey's Anatomy and Scandal but they don't do as well as these two did. She was lucky in many ways. It factored in the equation. Maybe it's something people don't want to see but it does matter. You can try to condescend me with that but it's the truth. Entrepreneurs have admitted luck is a major factor. If you want, there's an HBR article on "The Luck Factor" about Bill Gates and Microsoft.

"So it is with any decision: the chain of events that brings you to a choice point will be shaped by luck, good or bad. Prior circumstances may determine whether you’re in a position of power or relative weakness. (For that matter, luck governs whether rain or sun that day will make your mood sour or buoyant.) And the same is equally true for everyone with whom you deal." - HBR "The Luck Factor", November 18th 2013.

    Did I do better now?

Don't worry McDreamy fans, he'll be back for the ghost sex.

No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. Once was enough. Not again.

  3. I recall something saying she wanted more time with her children. IIRC one or more of her children's has special needs. I don't recall any in depth interview though where she spoke openly about Grey's or her exit.

I recall the same explanation. I don't think there was any malice intent involved.

I was wrong. I'd hope most of them will not bother to read at all.

Hopefully. I do find the cast's silence a bit odd. KMK and Kelly did tweet about it but the rest were surprisingly quiet.

  4. Would that reporter follow up with a question about how her production company is a money-making machine (for her/ABC and every partner in syndication)  because she dominates in the ratings as CEO/owner of her production company?   Or do you only want to basically address her as a TV writer?

That still doesn't answer the question about creativity.

Also, if this is about power and money, even Donald Trump has money and power. Doesn't mean that that person is all that great or creative. Good for Shonda for hitting the lucky strike and milking it to what it is, but she's not GRRM & Co.

Are they now going to rename the hospital Grey Sloane Shepherd Whateverthefuck?

Oh I can see it coming: The Shepherd Neurosurgery Wing. Yeah.

Where did Derek’s wallet go?  Did the cops take it?  Usually they’ll at least give the health insurance card to the EMTs.  The EMTs would have kept trying to use his name to address him.  That’s pretty standard to help keep the person alert and check for reactions.  But non-trauma hospital of fuckery doesn’t reach out to the cops or EMTs to get a name for Derek.

THIS! I thought the same thing. If it wasn't in his pocket, shit, check the car. I'm guessing that's how they eventually found Meredith but damn, what a lousy job the writers do in these kind of situations.

  5. Fuck this show.

    Seriously.

I really liked Derek. I really did. What a shitty way to kill him. I did enjoy his hero moment during the first crash.

I guess I'm sort of done. Sigh.

Oh and Winnie is the best character in GA ever. I love that kid.

  6. Can you imagine being like a lower cast member, who is making a few thousand an episode being told you have to work around Patrick?

Yes. When I was new, I had to make accomodations like that in my job. PD had the capital to do so. Even so, Derek was so isolated in the SLs that the only person I could see having an issue was Ellen or Caterina. Not sure what that has to do with anything.

Actors with their own shows and a few supporting cast members don't make that much.

Perhaps those actors don't have the same circumstances that PD had. If ABC had an issue with this, they could've denied his requests or his salary negotiations. They didn't and now surprise! This excuse doesn't make much sense to me.

I will wait to read PD's interview to see how it all went down and what were the motives. I sense ABC & SR's comment will be slightly BS (but I'll also hold on judgment until that), to make the full comment but I find the whole thing very fishy.

  7. Creatively (believe me, I use that term loosely where Shonda's concerned), I've always thought Derek would die.

I agree. Had Derek been developed as a character, it'd made less sense but I also believe that him dying would bring up more of a story than if he was alive.

I'm sure the racing will be blamed for it

Of course it will. Although it may not be the actual reason (it had to influence, it seems SR is more of finding excuses than actually realizing that her story is the issue) but yes, it will be the reason used from ABC and Shondaland. So low. Not a warning?

What a shitty year for PD. I do hope that he is back on our screens soon.

    • Love 2
  8. I have to wonder if PD did not take anytime off this year if we would still think he was dying

IMO yes, as not many were that worried that he'd be, perhaps, killed off until the last scene of 11x20 and the way that ABC has promoted this particular episode. I think that the time off was more related to the "diva" article (where PD had a time out and I can't stop laughing at how maternal that sounds) but not about his potential death. At least IMO.

ABC tweeted this. The fact that dead George is included doesn't seem to bode well for Derek.

Perhaps Derek is in limbo? It has Cristina and Izzie but Izzie was in limbo for a while. George died until his organs were taken out. So perhaps Derek is not dead dead but kinda dead?

  9. According to Ellen it was true. She talked about it with the 200th interviews, here. I'm pretty sure she's said it before this too.

Thanks for the info, I completely missed that. Given the Nightline interview, I was led to believe it was mostly ABC-related, not that Ellen had mentioned that too.

  10. It was so obvious on screen that SR and TRK never recovered from that.

Frankly, how could they? SR didn't seem to make an effort to make the whole thing better. She seemed to want to save IW from the issue but not to aleviate the situation with TRK. Just terrible.

Can't remember where I read the story, and obviously it was years ago, but my understanding was that IW had originally auditioned for Derek and resented losing the role to PD. Once PD became the show's breakout star it only got worse. And if true, it was silly on IW's part because he got much better material.

I remember IW telling the story in the special Oprah episode while grabbing Ellen's hand and saying that she was grateful he didn't get it because her boyfriend (now husband) was also black (like that had anything to do with it). I also remember a Nightline special where he was an asshole through the whole interview saying how ABC did not approve of IW being McDreamy because of race and interracial relationships, clearly with some resentment. Now, I don't recall IW saying specifically he was resentful for that but I do recall those two instances where he made it sure for people to know why he isn't "McDreamy" and not being ok with that decision. Frankly, by attitude itself, PD certainly has a better one and obviously was going to get more attention for being a genuine nice person than a resentful one.

Exactly! Burke, as a character, was a hell of a lot more developed and rich than Derek ever was. Derek has more of the broken soul trying to get fixed but Burke was a better character. I'm not sure if IW would be able to convey the same way that PD did in many emotional scenes but dude, he had the better material.

I don't understand the firing of Brooke Smith in any way. She was a good character. I do remember the PD statement and how he changed it to make it look the ridiculous statement that it was for this stupid decision.

There's so many questions surrounding his exit (if he's going) that it makes it impossible to judge.

I agree. He never talked about it, ABC/SR never addressed it. They just assumed it was part of the SL, but given that the  SL started a while ago, I tend to believe it was negotiated from the start. I do wonder, if he leaves, what the terms were.

But I don't believe we will know anything soon.

  11. Great thought. They've been shoved aside and didn't get hardly any followup to their baby dying. It would be nice to see them end the season having them get some closure.

Ep. 22 does have an April/Jackson description, so could be. I still don't believe that Meredith would be one to visit the grave of anyone. (Lexie's? Ellis?)

From Caterina Scorcese interview posted today.

When was it done? She talks about the 11x18 and this is three episodes later. Perhaps there was something she doesn't know? (Although I loved her answer and would like to see more of those Shepherd siblings, not the petty childish ones).

ETA: Sarah posted an instagram pic of her getting her hair done saying she's on location with Caterina, Kelly and Ellen.

    So many location shoots. Huh.

  12. You can bet that Ellen, Justin, Camilla, Jessica, Sara, Jesse, Sarah etc will ALL be getting angry, crazy tweets for the foreseeable future if he dies.

I can see Ellen being crazy attacked but not sure if the rest will. Camilla seems like she is a fangirl like many and constantly tweets about her #TeamMerDer love. I think it'll be mostly Shonda, Patrick & the Grey's account being overloaded by hatred. The rest may get some but not as bad.

And if he lives, we'll all be like...."huh, didn't see that coming".

Or perhaps we will go "Oh for fuck's sake! He's fine?! This is bullshit!" There is no win-win in this scenario.

If PD did request an early release from his contract, I'm sure it will be made public and he will catch plenty of heat over it. (Fortunately, I don't think he ever reads his mentions, and I'll bet he's very glad to be out of the country at the moment.)

Agreed. No need for that shitstorm over him to top off the non-fantastic year he's been having. I'm guessing, like the KH case, that most blame will be placed on him and unfortunately, ABC & SR do have the "we did everything to make his racing schedule comfortable" card to play, making him look worse (despite the fact that more reasonable people could see this in a more rational way). Surely when PD goes public on this decision, which I don't think it would be in the near future, maybe things will change but assuming this is his swan song, I wonder how both will handle his (alleged) exit.

Also, the whole "diva" article would grant some validity and that infuriates me because it's Page Six and these dudes can be nasty on many things.

  13. I don't doubt the reporters have their stories all ready to go for tomorrow night...just curious how it works.

GA-wise, I haven't seen any major leaks in huge stories by the press. Perhaps the reporters that were there were specifically chosen for being careful and not leaking any report beforehand.

I still think it was odd none reported interviewing PD but perhaps that was a sign of something.

  14. That would explain her lack of actual storyline even with all the screen time.

Did Stephanie ever had a storyline? I know I can't expect miracles from these writers but she was purposeless since the beginning.

I would much rather Owen and Amelia find another hospital someplace. If it is Richard then my interest in Maggie will be gone so I hope she goes too.

Maggie can stay. She is decent. Owen can burn in the zombie apocalypse. He's another one that's purposeless. He's just there and not in a good way.

  15. I am a relative newbie to Twitter and some other forms of social media and I admit to being fascinated/horrified by some of the stuff that people put out there, so sometimes I just randomly search out stuff to be repulsed by lol!

NOOOOOO! Bad idea. Find a good group and stick to it. Searching stuff on Twitter is the worst. Just by checking the replies to the actors' tweets, you want to hide under your bed and never leave knowing that humanity allows this to happen. Facebook & YouTube comments, just no.

My morbid curiosity has led me to some stuff that gets tweeted to the actors and other fans and wow. I've noticed that some actors don't tweet as much and I can't blame them.

Agreed. When the virginity tweets come out, time to hide. I just can imagine how WTF must they feel when they read these kind of idiotic stuff. Not to mention those who can't differentiate the character from the actor/actress. Those are a gem.

You think the network meddles in Scandal at all?

They have to in some way. I've only read about HBO having a  "no meddling" policy (in most cases) for the shows but given that network shows are different, I assume that they get involved in some way. Surely the execs know they can't take advantage of SR & Co. but I don't believe that if Shonda made a decision that the network believes that could affect them in any way, that they wouldn't get invovled.

I don't think its at all odd for a showrunner with multiple shows to hand off the longest running and well established show.

Me neither, especially when the show is given to people who have been a part of the show forever. Their ideas may not all be great but at least they know what show they're working on and aren't newbies who may not know how the system is.

I have never wanted to see an E! True Hollywood Story more than this one. It might have to be a mini-series.

Word. I'll bring the popcorn. This would be an amazing story.

  16. Wouldn't Bailey mention that to Mer while she was stressing?

Maybe this won't make sense but I'll give it a shot:

The second SP should be of the day he left. He has the same shirt but without the jacket, where his phone was. Amelia is already in the OR, so I assume Meredith also was but not sure how that can make sense as Derek is still on the road and Amelia already is on the hospital, despite leaving after him. Unless he's driving to Canada but whatever.

Telling Meredith that Bailey spoke to Derek hours later that Meredith did, probably wouldn't have made a difference as both had seen/spoken to him with hours of difference on the same day. The scene where Bailey tells Meredith to not freak out, is the following day.

Then in the car, you see the dash clock says it is 7:45 pm

It also says the date (March 26th), which if you check his Twitter TL, he posted that pic that day too, so the whole thing just seems that that is date that he shot the scene and the clock in the car was wrong (he posted the pic in the early afternoon). It's impossible to have it be 7:45 PM that bright and have shown in the episode that 5:00 PM was incredibly dark.

    • Love 1
  17. Why would Mere be smiling and looking happy and unworried in the pics and promos as she enters the hospital if she knows that Derek was in an accident and injured enough for the cops to have to come get her?

I thought that was a BTW pic, as EP was smiling to someone on her side (there was a wall on the window) and Zola looked still. I didn't think it was a promo pic.

I'm a proud feminist, but I will never understand Shonda's ideas about women and the men in their lives.

    Does anyone?

  18. I'm struggling to imagine someone bingewatching all 11 seasons on whatever platform and then bothering to watch the show live.

I was the same a few years back until I realize I was doing a similar thing with other shows, so I stopped really finding this unbelievable and just letting it be. Could someone with free time, binge watch 11 seasons? Sure. There are people with not much to do and they will watch it. I find the same problem as Tuleh2 does of finding a bunch of, what I assume to be teenagers because adults don't write or spell like that, who I doubt have watched live for long. I don't believe this is a large quantity of people that could sustain or improve the ratings of the show (especially with the fact that you can watch in non Nielsen ways) but it's not far from the new reality of TV viewing.

Hell, for Christmas break I rewatched most of The Good Wife. I stay quiet now.

Shocking exits are not always (and in fact are almost never) good. In this era where audiences are eroding and fanbase loyalty is important, fans don't like surprises.

This is not necessarily true. The element of surprise can always cause a bust in ratings or curious people that dropped the show, check in again to see how they'll deal with x's death (probably Derek's could cause such an action) and maybe stick to the show again. Others might dropped out completely at the top of the announcement. My personal opinion is what you said: I am no good with surprises and would like to know beforehand (hell, I'm a total spoiler whore) but many aren't like that. It's quite a personal choice.

(They squee over EP and PD and wish they were THEIR PARENTS... Ha! that's gotta make the actors feel good, huh?)

I cannot count the levels of nauseous I get when I read this. No clue what the purpose of writing DAD and MOM is. Disturbing.

The fact that she hasn't said a single peep has added to my thinking that Derek isn't long for the world.

To be fair to Shonda (shocking), she rarely says much about Derek. This isn't new and frankly, there isn't an official chatter about it, other than Twitter and forums like this one. I do find it odd as well but considering how she is, I'm not finding this that surprising.

  19. Also, didn't Kevin McKidd say they were going to have a quiet finale?

He said the show should have a quiet finale, not that it was going to have one. It was a speculation, since the EW article also speculated kidnappings and whatever else. If Derek does die, there might be a quiet finale but IDK. Last season was a quiet finale.

I think one of those things was ABC requesting 2 additional episodes. It sounds as though PD was contracted through what would have been the end of filming for S11, but then ABC added 2 episodes.

Oh right! Good catch. So in original terms, GA was set to end next week. Makes sense to now have the catastrophe episode. I found it odd that they hadn't ordered the 24 as usual. Wonder why they added the extra two.

Except its been being discussed all over the internet for a couple of weeks so not really all that shocking, nothing like The Good Wife. I'm sure you are right and Shonda will get applauded as usual.

Exactly. No one had any clue about Will's death (which I'm still not over) until it actually happened. In this case, everyone is sort of expecting it.

I also think Jesse getting hurt at that celebrity basketball game sidelined him on the show.

I am a horrible and forgetful human as for four seconds I had no idea who Jesse was and now find that I didn't even noticed he hasn't been that much on the show anymore. Oh well.

I think GA - perhaps more than any other network show - has benefited from the introduction of Netflix, Hulu, etc. which allows it to keep attracting new viewers after the old ones drop away.

True. However, this new batch of fans are more technological, which means that many of the speculation online of Derek's pending fate maybe coming from them as well. So, they may be very aware of how this will end and may not give it a shot at the end or already have given it. It can go both ways.

Also, don't they have new boots-on-the-ground showrunners/producers this year?

Many new writers started last season and the showrunners are people that have been for a long time on the show (it's Stacy McKee). I think the sloppiness may just be that: sloppiness and not new writers with no idea of how the show is/works.
