  1. I don't understand why they don't switch to direct deposit for the cheques. Have you asked recently?
  2. I gave up handing out treats years ago when it became too hard to lure kids for treats. (I had no children in school and the block beyond me was dark) I just asked to cat if she would like to go out trick and treating (she is a tortie so wears the perfect Halloween colours year round) She responded no, but dinner would be good 😁
  3. Happy Birthday Squeaky. I hope you are getting a special treat for dinner tonight!
  4. I just came in from taking out the garbage bins and noticed the neighbour across the street has a goulish man something parked on the front porch for Halloween. The thing is, the previous owner of the house died by suicide so it is very creepy for me. Maybe the new owners know, or not. Anyway someone walked by and I said excuse me for venting, but. She was very sympathetic and even commented on my moccasins which even though several years old, do have nice beading work, grins I am happy to have supported a Canadian Indigenous company
  5. @Netfoot please take some happiness in your new Honourary membership. If financial things change, you can always contribute. While it is sad that Mo could not be there, Dotty and Buddy were. And the efforts made by your friends to make sure you were at the AGM, from offering you a drive to a spare tire are remarkable!
  6. Dimity - you live in Canada, right? From what I have heard/read heat pumps do not work well at very cold temps. And electricity is more expensive than natural gas, plus I have experienced long outages at very cold temperatures. While the furnace won't work, I am grateful for my gas fireplace and gas stove. I have never had a natural gas outage. So stick with the gas furnace is my thought!
  7. Might I recommend you find a free ad blocker? I use AdBlock but not sure what will work for you. While I appreciate this site and understand they need to make money some how the ads just slowed down my computer and were nothing that appeals to me. Maybe they could instead run a campaign asking for donations.
  8. Hey @Netfoot please walk to the mall and provide updates so we know you are OK Hugs
  9. Thank you @Bastet I admit I am one who had never heard of the marine rescues. But I do remember that day clearly (and I live in Canada) I had left for work before the first plane struck and upon arriving at the office the manager was sitting at the reception desk and informed me the Pentagon had just been hit as well as informing me of other things that had happened while I was on public transit. Not much work was done in the office that day - we were clued to the TVs. Internet was spotty. And lunch was ordered in (sandwiches) But I did talk with someone who became a future client. There was a real fear that we would be attacked next. Going home that evening, on the subway platform I heard someone remark, think of all the pets that are not going to have their owners return. That evening I had to go to a church meeting. I remember thinking while driving how could people in those office buildings survive? Details were still very limited. When I got home, I remember tuning in to Peter Jennings and his campfire chat (as I recall he called it) in an effort to calm us all. Like @chitowngirl I have a 9/11 tradition - it is to watch the documentary done by two French film makers which focuses on a fire department located close to the twin towers.
  10. . Actually I like Brian Stelter and he was on CNN in Aug so I am glad he is back permanently
  11. Well, the remnants of Beryl have now made their way to Ontario, Canada. Heavy rain, t-stoms and risk of a tornado in some areas.
  12. I read somewhere that the entire water system was shut down last night, before the storm (7pm I think). That you were able to take a shower was due to residual water in the lines.
  13. This might be too late, but while you still have power, you could make ice blocks (I just use a loaf pan filled with water) and then place in a cooler if the power goes off. You can salvage the frozen meat that way. As I recall items in a fridge are good for 24 hours and freezer 48 as long as you don't open the doors much. Hoping the worst doesn't strike, hugs
  14. Thank you for the updates - it's nice to hear what is happening on the ground. In addition to wheely bin and covering tools - are you prepared for a lengthy power outage? With forecast wind speeds that is what I would worry about most.
  15. I love potato Caesar salad. Begin by steaming small potatoes until partially cooked. Then prick and transfer to a bowl with olive oil and crushed garlic and toss. Let marinate for several hours. Just before you are ready to cook the steaks, cook bacon strips and place the potatoes on the grill to char lightly. Remove potatoes from the grill and cube. Place in a bowl with crumbled bacon, Caesar dressing and chopped green onions. Toss. Sprinkle freshly grated parmesan on top. I always use jarred Caesar dressing since it is thicker. The salad is delicious when warm/room temp, or even the next day when any leftovers have been refrigerated.
