  1. I'm going to go out on a limb here:  Yes, Owen shoots about as well as the average Stormtrooper, but given Beru's right hook, she's the badass of the family anyway.

I guess if the Captain is demonstrating this relaxedness in the banter, the crew feels 'at ease' to do the same.  It does seem like it would lessen productivity, esp if one had to ask what someone meant by what they said.

Even when he was on Discovery, his approach was always something to the effect of "Call me Chris.  'Captain Pike' was my father."

I mean, I kind of get it. He's got a different style than anyone we've seen before, but then none of our prior captains have been carbon copies of each other.  But also, this is a guy who's already been through Talos IV, and who knows his fate.  I can see that leading to not caring about formality.

  3. S6.  I'm convinced that if Laurence had been played by anyone other than Alan Alda, the story would have come across as mawkish, but there's something about him that makes the whole thing just wonderful.  If you were asking me to pick a favorite Brand Name actor who came in for a short arc, he's at the top of my list.

Score one for the absent-minded professor.

  4. I've been home a week after an extended stay in the hospital, where I had a life-altering illness.  While I wasn't attacked by a patient and didn't lose a kidney, like Carter after Sobricki's attack, my colon was removed, with plans to hook up what's left after I heal for a few months.

Anyway, I'm still at home recovering and getting wound care, and instead of gravitating towards edgier stuff, I've been finding myself going toward comfort food TV, with ER near the top of the list.  I skipped around a bit in the earlier seasons, but really started to watch in earnest in Season 5 (although, like the list, S4 remains my favorite).  And I have an extremely unpopular opinion:

I...like Lucy.  Having been through medical school now, I actually really related to some of her struggles, and to how she took to psychiatry like a duck to water (guess my specialty).  While I know it was just personalities not meshing, I thought Carter was not great at teaching her early on, and even my memories of watching it when it first aired always served as a guide as how not to treat med students.

I think her story at County was about finished even if she hadn't gotten killed.  But at the same, I think she deserved better, as phenomenal as the episodes were.

  5. There's something in me that really liked the Sybok reveal.  I never really cared for Trek's occasional desire to ignore its own. canon (the sidelining of TAS for so many years, as a start), because you should love something warts and all.  TFF is a terrible movie, but the concept of Sybok isn't.

Although it surprises me that someone as rigid as Sarek would have a physical relationship outside of a marriage/bonding.

  6. After a bunch of fun, celebratory stories in the Pride anthology, closing with Conroy's own story about his struggles as a gay actor who had to wear a mask, and how that helped him relate to Batman, was heartbreaking.

    Amazingly strong dude.

Maybe they seem more sincere and more genuine in their real connections, or genuine in hoping to be connecting in ways they weren't before.

It helps that, again, excepting Julie, all of them seem to be there for the right reason.  Matt, Jamie, and to a lesser extent Melissa all seem to want to check out where life has taken everyone, Danny of course wants to put the trauma behind him (clearly with the experience, not just with Julie), Kelley is being a supportive friend, and Tokyo I think is looking for redemption--and earning the hell out of it.

Spock's hair and sideburns are driving me nuts. I am not feeling this Spock at all.

I'm having the opposite reaction.  During his talks with Uhura, I was gobsmacked by how much Ethan Peck sounds like Leonard Nimoy.  It was ridiculously impressive.

One more question:. Is Number One, nka Una, not an android?

    She is not.

In fact, going back to the rampant sexism of "The Cage," the Talosians offer her up to Pike as a potential mate, specifically talking about her being good breeding stock.

I love TOS but, let's just say that when it comes to gender issues, it has some problems.

  10. Yeah, it's a Mother's Day thing.  They said it was a livestream, but the episode was just available.

I am trying to parse where they're getting the last name "Connor" from.  Maybe I'm just too stupid, but "Robinson" is from Lost in Space, "Nelson" is I Dream of Jeanie, "Heston" is Planet of the Apes, but the best I can do is Sarah Connor, and she wasn't an astronaut.  I guess "Emily Ripley" would have been too on the nose?

And his diary monologues just felt like a knockoff of Rorschach’s journal in Watchman.

Since I have yet to spend three of the precious hours I have been allotted on this Earth to watch The Batman, I will refrain from those comments, however...

Whatever successes Watchmen has comes from the fact that Snyder just essentially adapted a great deal of it from the graphic novel, completely unaltered, down to shots that are 1:1 with Dave Gibbons' panels.  He also completely missed the point that Rorschach is NOT the hero of the story, and we are not supposed to be rooting for him.
