The Legend Of Vox Machina - General Discussion
PurpleTentacle replied to AnimeMania's topic in The Legend Of Vox Machina
Just wanted to note that this is a PR-Announcement. There was no actual renewal, since no renewal was necessary. It's been pretty clear that season 4 was/is produced back to back with season 3 for a long time. There were even SAG-AFTRA listings in May that made it abundantly clear that production was well under way. -

The matron is the godess of death, not the godess of the afterlife. Think Thanatos and the Keres combined with Charon, not Hades. She transports the souls to the appropriate god's domain. That can be the god you worshiped in life or, if you weren't religious, the god your life was most closely aligned with. She also makes no difference between primes and betrayers in that regard. If you followed Asmodeus, you are going to the hells. Also Kash's wife clearly wasn't really a god, even though she was warshipped as such (the Wiki even spells it out). That doesn't fit in the exandrian pantheon. There are powerfull beings that will pose as gods from time to time. One of the Nein warshiped such a being for a while. And yeah, I don't think that aspect of his character is even a thing in the show. Yeah, they are retreading that arc, which makes it extra annoying. I don't remember her saying anything about her blood. I guess we'll see where it goes. As said, Ashley hinted there is more to come and I think the show foreshadowed it as well. I'm not very optimistic for this storyline, but we shall see. -

Oh, they were/are both in the clasp, which is a thieves guild. That Vax was in there came up in an earlier season. I didn't even remember it from critical role, as that was pretty much done with before they started streaming, so mostly confined to their home game. Gods can have more than one champion, but then the power will be split up between them, making each champion weaker than a single one would be and it might lead to infighting, which is why the primes tend to only have one and the betrayers tend to have multiple. It's reasonable to assume the things you did. I don't think they established super well what the matron (raven queen) does, or if they did it was long ago. But yeah, if you know a bit about the background it's pretty clear that Kash is dead and she just sheparded him over to the afterlife. -

The Raven Queen is the godess of death. She farries all souls to their appropriate afterlifes. She only has one champion and that is Vax. So she didn't capture Kashaw so much, as escorted him to the afterlife. There were quite a few changes. But I think most were necessary. It just got more combat-heavy with ever bigger combats and you can't really go "Yeah we are all HP-sponges!" in an animated show and still keep it exciting. So they had to come up with something that would be believable. Interestingly as a result Draconia wasn't destroyed. Another point towards them knowing that the change won't matter in the future. I think the Mighty Nein will be easier to adapt. Well, they had to combine their trips to the hell and the fire plane, because otherwise that would have been repetative. Then they needed an interesting advesary in the hells and so why not Zerxus? It's not like they set up that Rakshasa from the campaign. Might as well use Zerxus, maybe set up for a Calamity movie that may or may not happen. (I personally really hope it will. Calamity is my favourite thing they've ever done.) Most of these can be chalked up to better flow. Although I agree that Ripley got away one too many times. Really could have tightened that up. Basically they want to give Pike a storyline. She didn't have one in the original campaign, since Ashley was constantly in New York, filming Blindspot. So they went for the most generic one you could think of for a cleric. The crisis of faith. It is yawn-inducing, I agree. Agreed. It was always nice that it wasn't the vomit-inducing Vax/Kiki romance. Also agreed. That was so flimsy and clearly just Sam trying to get out of having to play Scanlan any longer. Some fans are pissed though, let me tell you. And their explainations of why the Bard's lament was the greatest thing ever are just as flimsy as the lament itself... -
I am, thanks for noticing! So far this was set in the real world with slightly over the top, cooky characters, who would sometimes murder because their fries didn't have enough salt. But you are saying the premise is now that reality is completely out the window? Next episode Elsbeth is going to kill somebody with her mind powers, because they annoyed her too much and after she gets caught beam out of the prison cell onto the a romulan warbird, where she will be revealed as a Sith? While you might love that, that's not the show I signed up for. You seem to care a lot.

Is it me or was that motive a little weak? I know how annoying people can wear on you, but that ticket subscription must have run out eventually, right? If it was the same as the plastic surgeons it would have been 11 times. And it's unlikely that finance bro would have renewed the subscription on his own dime, as he clearly hated it and had probably other ways to impress women. Other than that, it was an enjoyable start to the new season.
-
Elsbeth has more self control than I. If he'd flirted with me, I would have climbed that... well despite how he looked in comparison to elbeth, he probably would need to climb me (6'8"), but no matter, climbing would be happening!

This episode made all kinds of no sense. First an NMC battery that small wouldn't do that much damage, yes you'd get your foot burned real bad, if you can't take the boot off fast enough, but that's about it. Second such a battery wouldn't just spontanously combust because of a few G-forces. Otherwise electric cars wouldn't be a thing. Those things accelerate like crazy. Third, there is no way these batteries are interchangeable between those completely different devices. Fourth, I have never heard of a hoverboard that had a swapable battery in the first place. Fifth, a hoverboard would have a much bigger battery, otherwise it would go two meters and then just stop. I still love Elsbeth but the writing this episode was real rough... It's not like murder mystery shows are usually the height of realism, but usually they at least try to keep it somewhat plausible...

I mean not that wrong. She was dressed as Glinda the good witch. Glinda has a few lines in defying gravity where she thinks about doing just that together with Alphaba. "Just you and I defying gravity!" Before she chickens out. Interesting. We'll see if somebody dances with Rio next episode.

I really thought it would be Pike's journey that would lead to the resurrection. Especially since Ashley Johnson hinted that there was a lot more to come for her character and then there was nothing. Although they are already well under way with the production of season 4 and I think they were even written together, so maybe she meant that. Speaking of, I think they should be able to wrap this up in one season and then it's off to the Mighty Nein. Or do you guys think they'll take two more seasons? So Kashaw is most sincerely dead? That's a wild thing to do. It might lend credence to my theory, that Bells Hells is the last campaign in Exandria. They basically know that he won't play a bigger role in the future, since they are almost at the end. Speculation that could be a slight spoiler: Great season. Can't wait for more. We should be getting the next one sometime next year. So not such a big break this time. -
Man they really made a meal out of what could have been a simple scry in the game. Also in the end they gave some extra flavour to the message spell. Hope that doesn't mean they'll tone down the antics of a certain blue tiefling down the line.

This show makes me happy. It's consistently the funniest thing on TV. Maybe ever? Sad that this is the final season. I feel they could have gone for ten seasons and a movie. Nadja really thrives in human office culture. Laszlo's concerns very obviously unfounded and he should really apologise. I like the guide's and Jerry's dynamic. Finally somebody who shares her ambitions to take over north america. But I don't think we'll see a lot of them, with only this season left. Though maybe that will be the ultimate end of the show, them actually succeeding? I doubt it, but it would be funny. Will Nandor and Guillermo finally bone and get it out of their systems and/or get together? They can't keep blueballing me till the end, can they? It's certainly complicated after we established that Guillermo isn't suited to be a Vampire, although I still think that was a bit of stretch. We saw again in one of these episodes how very much not effected he is by humans around him being murdered. I think he would have gotten over doing the murdering himself pretty quickly... Speaking of Nandor, Kayvan Novak shirtless is always a treat. Funny that the only thing keeping Laszlo from creating life was him being too impatient and abandoning the project at the first sign of problems, but that very much tracks. I wonder if Vampires have some inherent magic, apart from hypnosis, transforming and flying, that they just don't know about. That would explain how that monster, that is most certainly not inspired by the work of Victor Frankenstein, ever came to life in the first place. Because it certainly wasn't the "science" Laszlo was using. I'm excited for the rest of the season!

Also half of them very Disney interpretations of the characters. What else on Disney+? :D I'm a bit sad that I was spoiled for Billy as Maleficent by the mid season trailer, Marvel released on Youtube a week or two ago. Because that would have been a banger reveal. He's right, "if the cheekbones fit". Not hearing Patti LuPone as a lead vocalist in one of the versions of the witches road has to be some kind of crime. Hopefully we'll at least get an out of universe version of that at some point. I think she is more there for the souls. They couldn't say that before because it would have made it too obvious. So they used "I get my bodies" as euphemism. Notice that she never really said she'd take the bodies. Just that she'd get bodies and what she does to them afterwards is a bit of interpretation. I'd assume "sever the souls from them and leave the bodies behind". Also I think she isn't just there for the bodies, but also for Agatha. Otherwise she would have never shown herself. The green witch trial is still coming up, right? I don't think Billy is a green witch, so Rio would have to do it. Will she, or will they have to find another way through it? With her being the real Jolene, I'm inclined to believe that the wicked witch of the west was actually based on her. I actually think she doesn't lie that much. She is just very prolific. Only thing I'm unclear about is if she has really been on the road before. But I'm leaning towards that she was, but was being carried by the rest of her coven. Well we only have two episodes left, so I assume yes. They have served their purpose. That's the only thing I would criticise about this show, some things could be fleshed out a bit more. But I assume after most previous Marvel shows doing horrendously, they got a pretty limited budget. So they have to be economical with what they do. I think he wants to be William. But knows deep down he is (at least mostly) Billy. Earlier in the episode he told Agatha "She [Wanda Maximoff] is not my mom. I have a mom [Rebecca Kaplan].", but in a way where you might say "The lady doth protest too much, methinks.". Wasn't that part of the "Alice, don't try to save Agatha!" that got cut off, or was there a seperate instance?
-
I love this show. It's a bit disheartening that some parts of the internet are down on it just because they got into a groove of hating Marvel. But I guess you just have to ignore that. This episode was very sweet. With Lilia finding a fitting end to her journey and resolving all her issues, I now very much doubt that anybody will come back at the end of the road. Which really sucks for Alice. She had just broken the family curse and in the end might as well not have bothered, for all the good it did her. Unless she has an alternate resurection condition by Agatha giving her power back. But that seems unlikely. Rio being Death probably would have had a big impact if it hadn't been spoiled. I wonder if we had figured it out otherwise. Collectively, probably. There were quite a few hints along the way.
-
A lot of people died in the last few episodes. Wondering if it will stick and/or if it will stick with some and not others. yup. They really shouldn't have let Raishan out of their sights.
-
Considering how averse they are to resurection magic in this show I have to ask myself if Percy is really dead. At the moment I assume this is part of Pike's arc this season. That at the end of her journey she will unlock therefore unkown powers within herself and resurrect Percy.
-
I think he meant of the life William Kaplan lived. He seems to remember that he was Billy Maximoff and the events of Wandavision after he was born. At least vaguely. That is sad. On the other hand I really can't blame a 10 year old in the body of a teenager for not coming clean. He must have been so scared. And while it's cruel in a way, his parents don't know any better, so they are happy. Maybe ignorance is bliss?

Shower thoughts: The original ballad of the witches road doesn't say anything about "I'll see you at the end.", like Lorna Wu's version does, it says "Follow me my friend, to glory at the end." instead. But the road changes for the coven. All these people were familiar with Lorna's version, probably more familiar than with the original. Billy probably only ever knew the Lorna Wu version. So what if when Agatha walked the road there really was just "glory at the end", but now, with this new coven and their changed expectations, lost loved ones will wait for them at the end of the road? Like the rest of the coven and Billy's brother. To be fair, that was a bit of a dick move. Bringing in the actor who plays Wanda's brother in the X-Men movies and outright saying that it's Wanda's brother in the show, only to tell fans "don't be stupid, why would you believe us?". Personally I didn't care, but I can see why fans would have been pissed. Maria Dizzia You know her possibly from Orange is the new black? Here's a list of stuff she's been in: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1978694/ Agatha said the body was empty. So yeah, he was dead. If there is still some of William Kaplan in there, I don't know. Actually I don't think so. People I've heard talking about it said yes, but I think that is comic-lore. The show has given no indication that there is anybody but Billy Maximoff in there. He also audibly said it. We heard it in the flashback. I think it's just other witches can't hear or see it. Otherwise that would have been a very awkward 3 years, since "William Kaplan" was also blocked by the sigil. Imagine trying to say your name in class or at the doctors and suddenly there is a sigil over your mouth.
-
She didn't black out. I thought so too for a second but then I remembered. Agatha explained that that's how sigils work. Even the witch who cast it doesn't remember. So she gave him the sigil intentionally and then immediatly forgot. Agreed, especially since 5 was so short. I guess they really wanted that cliffhanger to get people talking. But I think it would have worked just as well to generate hype if they had released both episodes back to back. Streaming services don't have airtime, that's the nice thing about them. So they could have absolutely done that. Same. Well let's hope we are wrong and they pick it up next episode. Rio still being back there might indicate that it isn't done yet. I think she saw exactly what would happen to him. Which is why she told him to enjoy the present. She knew he wasn't going to be alive for much longer. Why exactly she gave him the sigil? That's an interesting question. Maybe she saw multiple possible futures and the ones where they all knew who Billy was from the beginning didn't work out? I think we'll find out in the future.
-
So Billy was actually the black heart all along! It was neither Rio, nor Sharon (Mrs. Hart). Did not see that one coming. It was really interesting to see how Agatha's police fantasy really played out. Especially that chase, half the internet complained about. Of course it wasn't actually as dramatic or unrealistic. That was all just in Agatha's head. Nice seeing how everybody was connected. Also nice seeing Billy kiss his boyfriend. Marvel has had a tendency of teasing some queer relationships and then chickening out at the last second. Now it would be nice if they also had the balls to do it in the movies... Agatha's speech at Billy about how witches survive was so clearly about herself and her trying to convince herself. Okay, Alice, Jen and Lilia can't all be dead. It's not going to be the Agatha and Wiccan show for the rest of the season. Also where is Rio? She wasn't swamped. I guess she stayed behind for now, for... reasons. But shouldn't Agatha and Billy ask themselves where she is and wait for her?

I don't think this performance has much to do with April Ludgate. It is really close to Lenny Busker though, I'll give you that. But so far I'm enjoying it. She is over the top at times, but last episode we got some genuine emotion and imo good acting from Plaza. If you want a completely different performance from her, I recommand The White Lotus. She does have range. She's just often cast in the same ballpark. -

I loved that they incorporated Zerxus into this show. Calamity is still the best actual play I've ever seen on the internet. Still holding out hope, that they might make a movie out of it for Prime. Maybe this could be a bit of a setup for that? A boy can dream.

I think she just put it together. Teen said the name Nicholas Scratch, confirming once and for all that he can't be her son, since if he was, the sigil would have prevented him from saying the name. So who else could he be? The houses are on theme. Probably drawn from their collective subconscious. Jen's house was a house where one of her bougie wine-mom clients would live and the trial was also themed accordingly. Alice's house was a recording studio from the time when her mother recorded that protection song. Agatha's house was from an 80s horror film, because of the ghost summoning. This one might seem the most far fetched. I think it comes from what most of them associate with séances and summoning ghost, or at least it's the one association that all of them have in common and so the road made it. Also it's probably not over, so we'll see where it goes. -

Oh forgot to mention: Another clue that this wasn't Agatha's real trial yet is that for all the other trials the aspect ratio of the video changed. For this it didn't.
