James by Percival Everett: Could not put it down. The hype is real. And for those that hated the climax of the original novel with Tom Sawyer’s stupid stunt, you’ll be happy know this version that it goes in a very different direction.

      Reveal spoiler

This isn’t the first retelling that had Huck be biracial/unwittingly passing, and it checks, but having Jim turn out to be his bio dad? Did not see that coming.

Dwight Garner gave it an excellent, well-written review in the Sunday NYT Book Review this past Sunday.

  2. It was no big deal, Whoopi stood up, walked over to Alyssa's side of the stage and asked him to stop filming.  It was less than thirty seconds.  I remember seeing Whoopi a million years ago introducing the Scottish comic Billy Connolly at a theater.  While she was introducing him an audience member put his feet up on the stage.  He was seated at the very end of the row, like seat #1A.  Whoopi continued her introduction, casually strolled over.  When she got to the end of the stage she kicked the feet off the stage and "That's my stage!". She got a standing O.

I thought she was very polite and have every right to ask him to turn it off as he was directly in her line of sight.

When I was in the audience of The View many years ago, it was clearly explained to audience members pre-show that pictures were definitely not allowed.

How are you going to blame your co-hosts and the royal family's PR for the fact that you're middle aged women that acted like teenagers?  I'm appalled.

    Perfectly said!

h well, I guess it's better watching them tear themselves apart rather than watching them easily murder/banish all the Faithful...

It's 100% better.  That was some good reality TV.

Where is everyone. ?   I usually watch a YouTube show after watching the show but have been  catching him first lately and he’s pissed ( and rightly so) about the discussion that Ana commented men are useless, and her gay men comments . Has she lost her mind? I’ll tune in to see Chelsea and hope she saves the show.

    Who's him?

Circling back around to strongly recommending the "Department Q" series by Jussi Adler-Olsen. This is an incredible set of murder mysteries that just gets better book by book (so start at the beginning if possible with The Keeper of Lost Causes), all set in Denmark. I'm halfway through book 7 (The Scarred Woman) presently. These are very adult and a little gruesome (not at all "cozy") and absolutely brilliant.

It took me a while, but I picked up The Keeper of Lost Causes at my local library, I'm halfway through, and I'm totally engrossed!

"Nolly" is taking place almost 15 years after "Sister George" so the movie would have been known to most of the "Cross Roads" cast and writers.

And known to some viewers of Nolly. 😉

I have a question about episode one. At the rehearsal Nolly was scoffing about Poppy’s having learned the whole script by heart. But then it seemed she was secretly doing just that at home. Did I understand correctly?  The real Nolly was apparently trained at RADA.

Nolly was commenting on Poppy learning the script before the run-through with the director (because that's when it gets heavily edited by Nolly).  After the run-through and blocking (and Nolly's edits), Nolly takes the script home, takes off the fur, turns on 16 lights and memorizes the script.

I address this a lot- but, I wish the cameras would stay off of Whoopi when she is uninterested. Quit giving her the oxygen. You can see it throws the rest of them off when she acts this way.

I get such a kick out of her reactions, probably because the same subjects that bore her, also bore me, we're on the same page.  I don't care if it throws the rest of them off.

  11. It's so interesting how people decide exactly what the characteristics of a traitor are.  Diane targets Anthony because he's not a team player, Ross targets Sonia because she's a pot stirrer.  While these aren't character traits I would look for in a best friend, they don't necessarily mean one is a traitor.  The traitor that isn't Ash, Harry or Miles looks like a young, tall, ginger Willem Dafoe.

Do the writers want us to like Nolly or not?  Her line about a coworker "may be late, I saw her at the bus stop when I went past in my car" sounded like a character we are expected to hate, but in some later scenes Nolly was more sympathetic.

Personally, I love a deeply flawed protagonist.  It will be interesting to see what transpires in the next two episodes.  I'm not familiar with the actor who plays Adams, but I'm developing a serious crush.

I think I prefer the US version because I don't feel so bad about celebrities being hoodwinked and backstabbed. The casts made up of regular people were more creative in their treachery, but I cared more about the folks who lost.

That's exactly why I preferred the UK series one version, the stakes were much higher.  $50K (or pounds) is a much bigger deal for a regular person rather than a reality show alum.
