No, I may very well be interpreting it incorrectly as well.  But knowing that the killer was paying them, that there was something illegal that they were involved in, and that he's got a giant piece of land in the middle of nowhere, I can't get it to add up to anything but some kind of drug operation.

Yes, and the sheriff was deliberately vague, either because it's part of another ongoing investigation or because he doesn't want to prejudice people against the victims. Or he doesn't think there is enough evidence to say for sure they were involved (it was the other police department who originally had the case and didn't act quickly).  At the time her phone pinged the local police knew the general area but did not know whose property she was on. The sheriff's department did the eventual plane searches and narrowed it down. So there was no connection between them so far as the police knew back then. This is just what I have interpreted, there seem to be major pieces still missing to the puzzle.

I think if there were evidence of a grow operation or meth lab at the perp's property the police would have mentioned it by now. They are biohazards. Reporters would have seen clean up crews coming and going, too.

Anyone else think it's rather coincidental that Carver and Brown were both on a fetish site, and she ended up chained and confined, fed only once a day and allowed out when he permitted? Like a master/slave relationship, minus the consensual component? Hmmmm. Maybe that is the illegal activity the sheriff alluded to? That part of the country is not very progressive, they may think of kink as criminal.

  2. The way I took the Sheriff's words, I thought he was only referring to the victims as being involved in an illegal activity, not the killer as well. But I may have misinterpreted. What sort of activity would cause the police to not worry if you're reported missing? Drug mules? I have no idea. :(

auntjess, thanks for sharing that list.  I had no idea that The Room was based in part on an actual case.

I'm reading Ghettoside by Jill Leovy.  So far, the focus is on one of many hundreds of murders of young black men in Los Angeles -- the teenage son of a detective.  Leovy gives us a social/cultural history of "black on black" crime.  It's an eye-opener, very thoughtful, and a book that I wish those in charge of law enforcement policies would read and take to heart.

If you enjoyed Ghettoside, you may like No Matter How Loud I Shout by Edward Humes. This book won the PEN award in 1997. It is heartbreaking, infuriating... and I'm afraid not much has changed since the 90s. :(

In an age when violence and crime by young people is again on the rise, No Matter How Loud I Shout offers a rare look inside the juvenile court system that deals with these children and the impact decisions made in the courts had on the rest of their lives. Granted unprecedented access to the Los Angeles Juvenile Court, including the judges, the probation officers, and the children themselves, Edward Humes creates an unforgettable portrait of a chaotic system that is neither saving our children in danger nor protecting us from adolescent violence. Yet he shows us there is also hope in the handful of courageous individuals working tirelessly to triumph over seemingly insurmountable odds.

Had a bat once. It swooped into my ex-BF's big metal-band hair and then my dad McGyvered a contraption from a big funnel, duct tape, and vacuum pieces to trap the it against the ceiling and slide it along until it was out the front door.

Is it okay if I am in tears from laughing at the visual of this entire scenario? (But it's awesome you guys got it safely outside instead of killing it. Well done McGuyver Dad!)

I have no doubt he did it, and I would convict him in a heartbeat.  I watched the entire trial on the old CourtTV.  That blood in the stairwell was NOT from someone hitting their head on the staircase.

Having said that, I do not think the death of the first woman should have been allowed in the trial.

What did you make of Henry Lee saying there was too much blood for a beating? I still can't figure out wtf he meant. The scalp is highly vascular. If you break the skin it bleeds heavily and often looks worse than it is.

Did they specify what kind of owl supposedly murdered Kathleen? Because I have some opinions about wing span and the space involved, and the lack of feathers or other owl evidence at the scene. They are brilliant predators but this would not have been a precision strike while hunting rodents. The owl would have been in a fury. What did Michael tell the police that first night about how he got inside? Did he say that door was wide open?

Havent thought about this case in ages. Now I'm back to owls and blowpokes! LOL

I should probably be embarrassed by this, but I actually do find the owl theory halfway plausible.

Halfway, I agree. But IMO a bird would have left more evidence, and probably wouldn't have flown right back out the way it came in. Ever had a bird in the house? They tend to panic and flap around.

It was only a single microscopic piece of feather found. Maybe it was a ghost bird.

I watched as well. She needs a lot of help and I don't know what Phil thought he was going to accomplish taking her across the country. She will be much better off getting help closer to home. I would like to see her boyfriend as well. I feel terrible for her and I hope she can get some real help. It sounded like she has struggled with her mental health for years, didn't she mention that some director wanted to have her see a psychiatrist during filming?

Unfortunately the "help" she's getting in Texas is alternative treatment because she refused to take meds. Best case scenario is this was a publicity stunt because otherwise...

I really hope her boyfriend is on the up and up.

Well, not currently, but I put the new Stephen King book on hold at the library yesterday secure in the knowledge that it wouldn't become available for weeks or months and got a notice this morning that it's already waiting for me!  That never happens!

Wow. That is like a gift from book heaven! Hope you enjoy it.

I just picked up Everybody's Fool by Richard Russo, one of my mostest favorite contemporary authors. It's a follow-up to Nobody's Fool, which I heartily recommend along with his other works. Everybody's Fool is off to a wonderful start on page 2 with a cemetery that everyone drives through because the markers are flat. lol

  8. Hope your massage did the trick! Yesterday was a scheduled day off so I took my poor tired feet for a reflexology treatment and he really got into the calves, which was awesome. Back to abusing them today though. *sigh* I did have banana chips last night and am a bit mad about that today but dammit I'm trying. These carb cravings are brutal.

They're airing the show with all the latest updates on Friday. I can't wait to see how they talk about Pam bringing Dateline into all of this.

    Thanks! Getting the popcorn ready...

I'm still mad about the health insurance fraud. Yeah, I know she did way worse but seeing that broad run in high heels really chapped me. Considering how many others with real disabilities have to fight for their benefits. She's garbage.

As a person who reads/watches a lot of true crime, I actually think that you can feel sorry for a criminal, even a murderer, in the context of what went on with that person to make him or her into a monster. By no means do I think that doing that absolves the person for a crime, or makes that person into a martyr; it shows that we are not monsters and have the ability to consider more than just the terrible actions.

I have compassion for people as fellow humans, even the "bad" ones. But for me that's different than feeling sorry for someone who, let's say, deliberately covered up a murder and misled law enforcement, wasting millions of taxpayer dollars and courted the spotlight in the process. Actions have consequences. My sympathies are with the victim and the people working to solve the crime. Of course Patsy might be completely innocent in all of this. I really have no idea.

Poor Linda - she was probably writing this while trying to duck the bus that Patsy was trying to throw her under.  (Yes, I ended the sentence with a preposition.  Deal with it.)

Ladies and gents, I believe we've found the killer! Only a savage would end their sentence with a preposition. :D

  12. ClareWalks: Exactly! Shelley Duvall has always been a bit... off-center. It's true that mental illness can escalate but really this just seems like a publicity stunt to me. I can hear Dr. Phil's producers in the pre-interviews. "Come on, Shelley, more nutty! MORE NUTTY! Play to the back rows! What about the Illuminati? Can you work them in?"

I hope she gets whatever it is she wants out of this. And I sincerely hope what she wants is not mental health help from Dr. Phil. That's like going to Jerry Springer for marriage counselling.

The show hasn't aired here, in SoCal, yet so haven't seen it except for the Coming Up  excerpts.   I'm sure Shelly Duvall had people representing her on her behalf, and that Dr. Phil has a team of attorneys, mental health experts......etc. who looked into this from a legal standpoint.

My go-to opinion is that Shelly has no money left and is not doing well on her own

Okay, I'll be the cynic. My go-to opinion is that she's a washed up actress who is trying to revive her career. I guess pretending to be crazy on Dr Phil is one path to getting roles in Lifetime movies. The sheriff of Nottingham, shapeshifters, Illuminati AND an implant? Come on.

Very sorry to hear about your niece. I hope she gets well.

i THINK adrienne said later she was let go due to her gaining weight...she was taking steroids for something and that caused the weight gain.  personally, i thought she looked great even if she did..she at least looked healthy and not like she was on the verge of passing out from starvation..

Even though Tracey's main characteristic is that she's unabashedly plus size. Can't have more than one on the show I guess. If Tracey returns Mariah will have to take up whatever diet Victoria's on. :(

That's what I'm saying. This family is like an onion with the layers of weirdness. Also, what in the hell with this pinning-a-scarf business? If it's that important to you, send someone out to buy a hat with a veil then, haha!

The rigged up scarf just sort of encapsulates Patsy for me. Her "showcase" house was a dirty mess. Her "star daughter" was in tacky pageants. Her "Jackie Kennedy mourning veil" was a scarf pinned to a hat. She wanted so badly to be in the social elite but just couldn't hide her inner bumpkin, like a piece of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of her shoe. The other day I read that people in Boulder used to laugh at how she went out in big hats, like someone off the set of Dynasty. I feel sorry for her (assuming she didn't kill her daughter or lie about it).

I'm only 15 minutes in and this mom is so delusional, I came right here to post. Well,he didn't know what to do so he chained her up! WTF? That is not a rational response and mama is all well he kept her comfortable. Wasn't that nice of him? She's batshit crazy. In regards to them searching, they said they were acting on a tip regarding a missing person. I found that to be weird phrasing. Was the missing person Kayla? Or someone else. Who gave the tip?

My understanding is it was the Spartanburg County Sheriff's office (not the local PD who took the original missing person report) who got the search warrant, based on combing through phone records after they got involved. The local PD already knew where Kala's phone had last pinged but did not act immediately because they had no indication of foul play (I think this is where the alleged illegal activity comes into it).

So maybe the phone records were the tip?

This ep did not do a very good job of explaining things. They wasted too much air time on the damn mother imo.

  17. So Jon's version of the alleged kidnapping is that Hannah refused to get out of his car when he took her back to Kate's house. He claims  Hannah was anxious and stressed out. And after a while he gave up and texted Kate and told her to come get Hannah from his place. Kate called the cops and claimed it was kidnapping.

They're both playing terrible mind games IMO. And I hope when the kids are of age they tell both parents to fuck right off, publically, since Jon and Kate love to be in the tabloids so much.

  18. Oh no!! Are you okay?  :(

So today was better. I did a decent 65 minute workout (cardio and conditioning intervals) and ate like a sane healthy adult. Also my fave  jeans won't do up so that is making me mad enough not to have treats. Thanks Preverts your advice is helping!!!!

  19. All she had to say was that she wore a veil for privacy in her grief. By adding in the reference to Jackie Kennedy she sounds like a pretentious drama queen. But it was nice of her friend to rig the scarf. The snarky, uncharitable side of me suspects that funeral was Patsy's Big Moment. Narcissists are like that.

  20. Yes he needed help, but according to his mother he should not have gone to jail for raping that poor girl at gunpoint because he walked her home so obviously he is not a bad person. It's in her letter to the court. I cannot with this woman. She left out the part where he actually fired the weapon at the girl but it misfired. Oh yes, you delusional dingbat, he was such a good boy.
