And they go back at least a few hundred years for most Western European and some Eastern European ancestors.

Well, yes, the show tends to root around for an historical moment they can talk about. So they go back as far as that happened to take place. But my point is they don't do a lot of backtracking once they've landed on that story. So if they find an ancestor who fought in the Boer War, for instance, they will launch into a whole story about the Boer War. They're not going to explore much more about that ancestor and trace his roots further and further back in history, especially if it's in another country.

I think that's why I liked this episode more than most of the celebrity ones. It didn't serve as another excuse for a history lesson we've heard over and over again.

  2. I don't think they've ever said how Mark died, have they?

Interesting when they were pointing out all the people in the photos to Beverly Rose they said "And that's your grandma Rose" - not "Roseanne." Nobody ever called her Rose.

Also - Darlene saying "great aunt Rebecca" was Becky's namesake - I believe it was established way back in the original show that Becky was not in fact short for Rebecca, it was just Becky.

Even the dumbest criminals don't do smash-and-grabs while the store is open and people are inside.

  3. Danny went to school in Santiago?  More info, please.

How did everyone know where to go to find the Thunderbird? Was that on the map? We needed more info on that too.

Why are there still stick shift cars? Those were brand new cars, not old ones. I get that some people still prefer manual transmission but they're not really better for gas mileage anymore so I don't get why they are still so abundant in foreign countries.

I missed how Danny and Angie fell behind after leaving the Roadblock in first place.

    Whose kid was that greeter?

Still no big placement shakeups. This is turning into a really anticlimactic season. Ricky and Cesar still 1st. Amber and Vinnie from 2nd to 3rd. Angie and Danny from 3rd to 4th. Rod and Leticia still 5th. Juan and Shane from 5th to 2nd, the only big jump in the leg. Derek and Shelisa from 6th to 8th. Yvonne and Melissa from 7th to 6th, Sunny and Bizzy from 8th to 7th.

The leaders keep leading, the laggards keep lagging.

I did kind of laugh at Ricky and Cesar saying they want all the prizes.

  4. I simply do not understand the point of merging the tribes only to split them in two. This is the second week in a row that they've done that. It does not make the game more interesting. It makes it less interesting. A group of 12 scrambling to assemble a dominant alliance results in all kinds of chaos. A group of 6 targeting one or two people is boring. Why on earth do they keep doing this? I'm sure they think it keeps the show "fresh" just to change things for the sake of changing them, but in doing so they are ruining what people like about the show.

Every week that goes by that Q does not get voted out makes me more and more worried he is going to win. Despite some players this week expressing exasperation with him, I'm worried about the amount of screen time he's getting. Of all the people left, he's really the only one I'd be really pissed off about winning. (And I do not believe for one minute he purposely threw the challenge. This guy's ego is incredible.)

90 minutes of filler and they still can't find time to explain how the new tribe got the name "NuiNui."

The guy she beat sure looked quietly pissed about it, though.

I can't believe he missed the March of Dimes question though. I mean, I didn't know FDR created the March of Dimes but the clue was right there in the question when she said his likeness appeared on the ten cent piece.

I hope they'd do this again.  I don't know how far they can trace back, but my last name at birth (i.e. my maiden name) has aristocratic roots.  I have a kinship book, but it doesn't go THAT far back.  Don't know if you can even trace back like 3,000 years.

This show doesn't really trace anything beyond American history though. They will go back to the first generation that came to America, and explore what conditions were like in the country of origin, but they seldom go back further than that.

  7. Sunday's (or Saturday's?) episode was The House in the Woods, which I'm sure is a repeat since it was only an hour long. The husband hired a co-worker to kill his wife while he was playing poker with friends nearby. There was another similar case where the husband himself was the killer, and used the poker game as his alibi but it turned out he left the poker game just long enough to drive home, kill his wife and drive back. That's what I thought this story was a repeat of, but different situation.

Something they mention almost in passing was that he was a former hockey player who was known for starting fights. That should have been a red flag right there.

I don't know what kind of monster can send someone to his house to murder his wife when both his children are in the house. This guy, I guess.

  8. I actually liked this one better than a lot of the celebrity episodes (especially when I've never heard of or have no interest in said celebrity). Coming to the table with a specific mystery to solve makes the show more interesting.

The first woman made up an entire novel about her ancestor.  Motives, plot, supporting characters, etc.

Yeah, I mean I understand wanting to give her ancestor the benefit of the doubt when it came to abandoning her child to start a new life elsewhere, but I kept thinking it's possible she was just a horrible person. And I'm not sure her great-grandfather would have preferred to know the truth after all. He might have been better off left in the dark about the whole thing.

I hope going forward if they do more of these they pick stories that can find more information about. Two of them were very similar, too.

I felt so bad for Chef Anthony.  No one can win in a situation like that, where everyone has different dietary preferences and needs - and Jill Zarin.  I wanted to hug him when he said the whole event reminded him of a teacher calling him a loser and born a loser, die a loser.  He is not a loser.  He simply does not have a chief stew that knows how to accommodate him and help him.   And therein is another failure of Fraser's management style.  Instead of complaining to Xandi about Anthony, talk to Anthony and find a solution.  And yes, Fraser, you can help him because now you've got Paris.  #TeamCheffy

I felt bad for him too but I don't think we can blame this one on Fraser. A more experienced yacht chef like Ben or Rachel would have sat down with those preference sheets on Day 1 and worked up meal plans that were doable. And that's not Fraser's job, it's the chef's. Instead, Anthony seemed to be deciding on courses on the fly, and it was Fraser who had to keep reminding him about the various preferences.

Fraser may be 100% wrong about Barbie but he's not wrong when he says Anthony is disorganized (and not just messy). When you have all these different requirements, you work out maybe two things that will meet everyone's needs. Not seven or eight different things you're figuring out in the moment.

Anthony seems like a sweet guy and I'm sure his food is great but he's not cut out for this job.

Barbaric and sick, how are we still putting people to death?

Because there are a lot of people who favor the death penalty, precisely because they see it as justice. And they vote for politicians that campaign on the death penalty. And they don't really care whether people sentenced to death die in a painful way because they see that as justice too.

  11. I often wonder how much time the team gets to spend together before the game begins because sometimes it appears certain players are voting together to eliminate the biggest threats to win. That seemed to be the case here. And it's a feature of the game that could be overcome. When it was just down to four players, the two strong players on the left (Jennifer and Chris) should have voted together against either one of the two weak players on the right (Micah and Ashley) which would have forced a tie they would have controlled. Instead one voted for Micah and the other voted for Ashley, which gave Micah and Ashley the power to vote Chris off together and leave Jennifer by herself, who they could then pick off at the end.

In that respect, Micah and Ashley were better players than Jennifer and Chris even though they weren't as knowledgable when it came to answering questions. They let the more knowledgable players build the cash then voted them off. The other players should have focused more on eliminating weak players than players they considered threats at the end.

Fraser might be feeling like he is not doing a good job and needs to blame someone for his lack of skill, Barbie is good at her job and he is jealous, maybe?

I don't think he's jealous, but I'm getting the impression he's taking his cue from Captain Sandy, and is reading insubordination into whatever Barbie says. Considering the problems he had with Camille and Alissa I think he just automatically projected that onto Barbie the first time she ever said anything that could be interpreted as insubordination. Remember Sandy fired Alissa for saying "Sandy I mean Captain Sandy." Also Sandy tends to coddle the baby birds the same way Fraser coddled Cat. I wonder if after last season Sandy pulled him aside and instructed him on how to behave, because I'm getting serious Sandy vibes from him now.

On a different note, it's hilarious all the girls are in agreement that Dylan should keep his mouth shut because he's so cringe.

There is no philosophic reason why these people are ghosts other than it is a TV show and the writers created them as such.

There is one thing they all have in common, which is that none of them died from natural causes. Unless you consider dysentery a natural cause, in which case you could say none of them died from old age. Their lives were all cut short for one reason or another.

  14. Team Barbie, 100%. She is absolutely right, she cannot win with Fraser. If she complains, he shuts her down and criticizes her. If she keeps her mouth shut, he keeps commenting on her being quiet.

I don't know what Fraser's problem is, but between the way he coddled Cat and the way he took an instant disliking to Barbie I think he's a terrible judge of character. He's a shit manager, that much is certain. Unloading on Paris before she's even gotten onto the boat is so unprofessional.

When Ben, who's banging one of his deckhands, has to give you leadership advice, you know it's bad.

Exactly. Speaking of Ben, the optics are going to be terrible whether he promotes Dylan or Sunny to Lead. He should not be banging one of his deckhands.

The editing on this show is so random. The main story at the top was the dinner disaster, so why cut away to a random conversation between Ben and Dylan about how Dylan likes to pick up girls?

The chef just really isn't cut out for this line of work. He seems to be a very fine cook and would probably be OK in a restaurant with lots of help but being a lone chef on a luxury yacht with demanding guests is a special talent he just doesn't have. I think someone with more experience would have figured out something everyone could eat regardless of specific restrictions. He just tried to do too many things.

I still don't get why breakfast can't be a simple buffet with fresh fruit, pastries, etc. That's the way the "toffs" are served breakfast in their mansions. I know, I've seen Downton Abbey.

I wouldn't compare Carol and Elias. Carol was a loving mother and grandmother.

I didn't suggest Carol might "go down" because she's as bad as Elias. I suggested she might develop the hots for him and follow him down there, if he ever returns for any reason.

Also? I don't think we ever saw enough of Carol's life to judge how good a mother and grandmother she was. She was a terrible wife. Yes, she was at least present for her daughter and grandson, but let's not start handing out gold stars just yet. Even in death she has already cheated on Pete with Thor, after letting Pete think they were back together. I think she's kind of horrible.

I can see I'm in the minority here, but it's 1969.  Trixie has a job with long, odd hours.   She's not working 1 or 2 days a week.  She has a young baby and husband.  Apparently, he's under a lot stress.   She needs to spend more time at home.

Surely they discussed whether Trixie would continue to work before they got married? It just seems so odd to me that she's working full time. I agree, that in 1969, Matthew would automatically expect Trixie to prioritize their home and child. Even with a nanny.

I'm surprised more people weren't watching the launch. Everyone was gathered for the landing but only two people were watching the launch.

I never think about the cut scenes; I don't notice them until I read about them here.

I felt like there had to be something missing with Fred and Violet when he was complaining to Sister Monica Joan. Also totally missed that Nancy was raised in an orphanage. Didn't remember any backstory for her at all.

So, Norelle and Joyce appear to be the only two regular pupil midwives. Because when they showed four of them at the beginning of the episode, the other two were different than the ones last week. Weird. Why not just have those two?

They're easily the two weakest teams left, while Ricky & Cesar, Amber & Vinny, Angie & Danny, Rod & Leticia, Juan & Shane, Derek & Shelisa, and Yvonne & Melissa just seem so much better-suited for the race.

I would argue Angie is not long for this race. They got a lucky break this leg because Danny was able to breeze through both the puzzle detour and the roadblock, which was another sort of puzzle.

I think Amber and Vinny might be in trouble too, she just doesn't seem to have the right attitude for the race.

I think it has more to do with the ghost's willingness to change. Elias stated he was not going to change and would never change. Carol does not act like a person who wants to change; she is just as unkind and selfish as she was when she was living when she married Pete. Granted, she just arrived, but she has that pompousness and conniving that Elias had.

I've been saying since she died that Carol and Elias might make a good couple. Maybe that's how she'll exit - not as a form of punishment or banishment, but because she develops the hots for Elias and follows him down, after he returns for some reason.

Now, to be fair, when I pulled up the information description on my tv guide it said that the killer's plastic surgeon was going to be interviewed this time which would have been some new content to add to the original episode but it wasn't enough to get me to tune in.

Oh, was that the "new" information? I wondered. And it was probably something that wound up on the cutting room floor the first time they aired the episode, having been deemed irrelevant.

  20. "The night time stopped" was not a new episode, despite what my DVR thinks. It wasn't even a particularly interesting episode, as it became obvious very early on who murdered Moriah Wilson and why. The bulk of the episode was spent on the manhunt for her killer.

The only thing I found sort of interesting is that the friend with the podcast and the boyfriend whose girlfriend killed her had the same last name - Strickland. And the friend who found her body was named Caitlin and the girl who killed her was named Kaitlin.

I think Thor has talked about a lot of other acts of killing that he enjoyed for reasons that had no redeeming value. I just can't think of anything specific at the moment.

Cutting off the head of a Dane, filling the skull with something I can't remember and sending it to the Dane's wife. "Very funny." Yes - Thor was a stone-cold murderer. He talks about killing all the time and it's mostly played for laughs. Meanwhile, the worst thing Pete ever did was build a deck without a proper permit. So I don't think their actions in life determine whether they become "stuck" as ghosts or not. In fact it seems more like it might have something to do with the property, like maybe it's cursed or something. The only person to die there who didn't become a ghost was Great Aunt Sophie who died in the pilot. It might be that if you die there from anything other than old age, you're stuck. All of the ghosts died of unnatural causes, so far as we know.

The scene where Pete was sucking on the candy in Carol's finger was just . . . so wrong.

Was Pedestrianism an actual sport at one time? This is the second time Hetty has brought it up.

When Thor started to get specific about sex with Carol he said "First we start off with backwards ram . . . " I don't even want to know.

No, he doesn't write it, but if he tells TPTB that he's not 100% up to doing the more difficult scenes that require stuntwork, then they'll probably write him less strenuous scenes.

Did he tell the writers he's not up to talking? Because that was my point. All he did was stare and glare suspiciously at whoever was explaining something.

  23. I see they have tweaked the format a bit. They now spend the entire first segment on Group Chat, then do Hashtag Wars after the first commercial break and after the talk show portion. That means one less game overall, which is probably for the best, since some of them don't really work very well.

That said, they spent FAR too much time on the talk show portion in the last episode. The comics were just sucking all the oxygen out of the room, especially London. She needed to dial it down from 11 to about 9.
