I was absolutely shocked by this comment, because it is totally factually incorrect. The crystals in parmigiano and indeed in many cheeses are one of two substances, tyrosine (a protein) crystals or calcium lactate. I mean, calcium lactate is *A* salt, but it is not culinary/table salt (sodium chloride) (and I do not believe he was being Mr. Chemistry and pointing out A salt had formed). Tyrosine crystals are the interior crunchy white crystals, and the calcium lactate can be exterior or interior.  The only "salt" salt would be on the exterior of a washed-rind cheese. Thank you for coming to my Cheese Ted Talk.

Thank you for explaining this.  But I think his point still stands (at least in my experience).  I absolutely love buying very aged cheeses (Parmigiano and Gouda mostly) and those amazing crystals are a big part of the reason.  It's like a burst of flavor and texture having a party in my mouth.

I love Bryan.  But foaming the cheese did really take away from some of it's "soul".

But I personally didn't find the lacking love and passion or soul comment(s) to be at all helpful (because it's such a subjective thing).   And I thought it interesting that I recently read an article regarding Bryan that mentioned he has a macaroni and cheese with a foam on the menu and the Voltaggio Brothers Steakhouse which he owns and runs with Michael.

It's obviously something he put some heart and soul into and wasn't just an afterthought and the few comments I found were very positive.

I am also a straight cisgender ally. My question was about the word "lifestyle" not "queer," as I thought was clear in my comment. She didn't say he was ok with her being queer, she said he was ok with her queer lifestyle.

I get what you're saying, just trying to figure out what she meant by "lifestyle."

I kind of figured that he was 'okay' with her being queer/lesbian but not okay with her openly living that lifestyle.

I've known several conservative parents with LGBTQ offspring who felt this way and verbalized it very strongly.  I love you and I'm okay with you being you, but you don't have to "give in to it" and live in sin. That type of thing.

Perhaps he has finally come around to accepting ALL of what it means to be queer whereas he made that distinction before.

  3. Unfortunately, I have had recurring cold sores/fever blisters since I was a child.  They are caused by the herpes simplex virus 1 and once you have it, you never lose it.  I've also had shingles and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) (cause by herpes zoster virus) and both are exacerbated by suppressed immune system and stress.

I get a cold sore/fever blister almost every time I have a fever or a PHN bout and have to take Acyclovir (anti-viral) in order to help it go away faster and not scar.  But I have NEVER in my life had any scar that looks even remotely like Janell's growth!

Two years ago, I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from the top of my head (baseball games with no hat!).  I had it frozen off 3 times but it kept growing back and bigger than before.  I had to have stitches and it left a dent in my head about the size of a dime.  lol

Hate to say it, but she's an idiot for not having that thing checked much, much sooner.  I couldn't even see the one on my head at first but having a bump wasn't normal, so I went to my doctor within a month of the first growth.

She definitely needs her "health" coach pass revoked. Stat.

Well I'm on Team Brock.  I know he's a background team member with only a couple of throw-away lines, but I dig his broody quietness.  Oh, and the dog helps too!

Sonny's personality turns me off too much to find any physical appeal to him.  I may be outnumbered, but I fist pumped when Lindell ripped him a new one and sent him back to Texas for training.  I'm constantly tired of his cutesy, kitschy names for everything - it was funny in the beginning, but now it's just annoying.  He's a loose cannon, too emotional and doesn't like being told that he's wrong.  He just needs to shut up and do his job

No, no, 1,000 times no!   Ever since she broke up with Clay ON THE DAY he was taking off on a mission I had loathed her.  That was such piss poor timing to tell your boyfriend - who needs his head on straight with nothing messing with him so, you know, people won't die - that things aren't working out.  And now she comes crawling back.  Please - other than Ray, these guys really need to stay single because they suck at relationships - with Jason leading the pack

Give me a man with a dog (or cat) any day.  But Brock is good looking in his own right.

Just FYI, you're not really quoting me...you somehow quoted my name, but the post dialog is not mine...  I only responded to the quoted dialog stating that I don't like either Jason's or Clay's new girlfriends very much.

Sigh.  Yeah I think I am done here.  I mean, I like Freddie Highmore but I was enjoying the ensemble and Melendez' team dynamic with the Residents.  I was upset when they decided to get of Jared's character and wasn't really on board with Morgan.  But I was ok with the group.

And even though I am a Claire/Melendez shipper I would have been 100% ok if they had never gone there.

But this season started to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

First the relentless torture for Claire.  She's already lost mother after having already been pretty much abandoned by her for years and now she is confronted with yet another devastating loss?  And this already after having lost her best friend to cancer last year.  Also her depressing spiral.  Just too much.

Second, the loss of Melendez in his own right.  He is a good character who actually had relevance.  I enjoyed his evolution in the show and was looking forward to how they'd deal with -- good or bad -- his relationship with Claire and also Lim.

Third, Shaun seems to have regressed in development (as a character and on a social scale) rather than progressed.  I wasn't liking Shaun very much this season.

Fourth, the elevation of Leah and her artificial importance to the show.  In hindsight it feels like so much of Shaun was written in this season service to making her relevant.  But honestly, I find her a character utterly typical and utterly useless.

And Fifth, the treatment of Carly as nothing but a disposable body for Shaun to learn sex on and who isn't even given a second thought after she's served her purpose.  Also,  in hindsight a character whose existence was for no other reason than to help with the elevation of Leah.  Her romance with Shaun wasn't even about her and Shaun at all.  Since nothing she did or said (except assuring Shaun he was in love with Leah) seemed to be deemed of any value to Shaun.  I mean, everything he learned about being a person is all because of Leah, amirite?  What a disservice the to character and the actress.

I have no confidence anything will get better.  So yeah I am dunzo.

Such a great post.  Thanks for putting into words exactly how I feel.  Hearts x 1000.

Well that's not manipulative on the writers' part at all.

That's Shore's go-to line, that they ran out of storylines for the character. (When Jennifer Morrison said in an interview during season 5 that she didn't understand why Cameron was replaced since 13 was being given was exactly the same role on the team as Cameron, Cameron disappeared from the show entirely for 3 episodes.)

If Shore really didn't know what to do with Melendez, he could have talked to Gonsalves. In his post-show interviews, Gonsalves talks about he would have liked the show to explore the relationship between Melendez and Lim more, and to have Melendez deal with what he's feeling about Claire and get past it, re-visiting it years later when she's no longer his resident.

But no, let's have Shaun and Lea instead. And probably bring on a new male attending who, if history repeats itself, will be very much like Melendez.

I also got the feeling that Nick Gonzalez wasn't really all that happy with the direction the show was going. One of his comments in the TVLine article was that he was really proud of the "small" feeling of the show and, even though it was on ABC, it was more of a procedural than the soap opera type dramas. And how so many people identified with the message regarding autism.

So for them to go the entire route of shitting on Claire repeatedly, forcing Shaun and Lea together (when IMO, it didn't show either character growing/learning) in such a soap opera way, Melendez jumping from Lim to Claire - it seems like the show is very much going in a Grey's Anatomy direction rather than being about the growth of an autistic doctor and those who support his journey to becoming a GOOD DOCTOR!

    Not a GOOD BOYFRIEND.

    I'm still so bitter.

And they killed off the only hispanic character.  AND he's one of the FEW characters who has completely learned and grown since episode 1.  And they shit on Carly (black woman) and Claire (black woman).  And they totally gave Melendez and Lim the short shrift on the ending of their romance.  It deserved more; how they dealt with it at the hospital and at least got back to their solid competitive friendship would have made for great storytelling.

And we are stuck with two of the most unlikeable characters in Resnick (white) and Lea (white) who have really not shown any growth or interesting/desirable traits.

I know I'm rambling.  Sorry!  I'm so bitter!

That episode felt like a series finale. I realize it almost certainly isn't, but it had such a "done and done and DONE!!!" feeling to it.

It's starting to feel like masochism to watch this show. The best and most interesting characters get booted off the show, and they double down on the most irritating and dysfunctional ones. I still like Claire and Lim, but Lim gets nothing to do and Claire is the show's punching bag.

It's disappointing, because they DO know how to create people to like and find interesting, but it's like the show just hates them and sets them up only to throw them away.

I wish I could like this post 1000 times.

So I've been having a quarantine marathon of this series thanks to random YouTube recommendations, and there's one thing that's bugging me....

Why on earth do they say "go to heck?" I would get it if it happened occasionally, habit of saying heck when you're using it as an expression and not saying "hell" as a cuss, but it's come up a lot from multiple people from multiple groups and it's bothering me. Like, you're talking about literal hell, why is the word not used.

I grew up regular Mormon (LDS) and saying any type of curse word is a no go.  My mom always said "heck".  My dad cursed but we got in big trouble if we said hell instead of heck.

I think maybe just like taking the Lord's name "in vain", you're supposed to respect Hell as a real place made by God to house Lucifer.

But I think mostly it's ingrained. My mom grew up in Idaho and my dad in Utah, so it may be a regional thing too.

More congruent reality?  Back-to-back eps?  Goodness.

The less said about the encounter with the Imperial Stormtrooper Jr. ROTC detachment which opened the ep, the better.

Every last misgiving Lindell has about Jason and Sonny was reinforced.  I have much sympathy, especially for Sonny getting dinged for challenging that stolen valor turd.  Unfortunately, for all his talk about the brotherhood, he has been the most disruptive element on the team.  He was never elected High Commissioner of Morale.  He is every bit as bad as any officer he hates for not "getting" the SEAL way. Log.  Eye.  Check it out, Sonny.

Jaaon is just stupid enough to not see that Lindell already did him a solid by allowing him to survive that thorough review/eval they so richly earned at the end of last season.  How does he reward the man?  Contempt not concealed from his men.  Lindell really has no choice now.

That fight he picked at dinner with Natalie was dirty pool.  Then, Mr. Direct broke up with her without actually saying the words.  What a big man he is.  My hero.

It's TV, so I will be shocked if Clay does not somehow become the heir apparent to Jason who is stepping down.  He's earned that choice.  No worries.  But, he can't make that choice thinking he'll be able to buck the brass.  That man does not have it in him to stay silent on matters far above his pay grade.  That is a recipe for disaster.  I hope I am wrong and he is gone to STA-21.

I loved Ray with his family in those last hours.  There was no bad guy and there were two damn fine grown-ups handling the impossible.  The Navy way, indeed.  I am not ashamed to admit I shed a tear or three when Jameelah gave him her doll for protection and they shared that last hug.  We owe so damn much to so many who go through such agonies routinely.

To be very clear, the service of Jason and Sonny, and all the others is tremendous.  I thank them all (the actual ones) from the bottom of my heart.  Yet, right is right.  None of this can be about them.  That kind of conceit gets other fine folks killed and leads to mission failures.  It is dangerous.

I totally agree.  I love this family and the actors too.

There’s a lot of male eye candy in this show.   For some odd reason, I find Sonny and Ray more appealing than Clay or Jason. Exactly how often have we seen Sonny appear cleaned up in fresh fatigues as he was  for his dressing- down office visit? Did you know the actor is actually Irish-Canadian?  His Texas accent isn’t too bad when you consider that.
I really find both Jason and Clays’ new girlfriends off-putting.  Jason's because she wants to change him into what she wants.  Clay’s  because she doesn’t give a crap about him other than using him for her own political agenda.  Hence her blasé attitude towards his 3 month deployment.
Ray’s wife ( can never remember her name) seems the most realistic and supportive.  Her storyline is similar to characters on the shows Army Wives and The Unit.

Agree with all this as well.  Jason's girlfriend sounded like his mother when they were out at dinner.  And Clay's just seems so sketchy to me.

  10. A google search told me that if I received restitution from a criminal, it is not taxable for me.

If a business has to pay criminal restitution, the business cannot claim a deduction for business expenses and their payments are therefore taxable to them.

🙂  And also, I suspend belief to a certain extent anyway on this show as it's not always the most accurate.  In the Rookie universe, criminal restitution isn't taxable apparently and him signing over the comic books was a great thing for Nolan to recover at least part of his money quickly.

I thought the walkie was just in the ambulance somewhere and she was overhearing the conversation

LOL!  That would have made sense!  But no, you can see her holding a walky in her hand.  And at first I said "like Lim would really give her a walky" but then Lim had hers.  So who did she steal it from?  lol

  12. So who did Lea steal the walky from?  Sure was convenient for her to be sitting with one in her hand.  Oh, writers...please do better.

If Melendez, Claire, Lim, Glassman, or (surprisingly to me) Park die, I'm out.  If Andrews dies...well, just don't kill the black man, okay?  Speaking of that.  That adorable young patient of Park better make it (although I'm afraid he won't).

Lea and Shaun can do whatever I guess.  That's what fast forwarding is for!  Sad because I love Freddie, but I just can't with this plotline.

Everyone up thread who stated that all that stuff in Shaun's wonderful speech happened without them being in a romantic relationship are spot on.  And kind of reinforces Lea's position to not be in a romantic relationship with him.  They work!  As FRIENDS!

Put them in a romantic relationship and they really may not work because the dynamic completely changes.

    PLEASE writers!  Do better!

  13. But isn't Glassman back as the President of the hospital?  He certainly knows about it since he bailed him out or whatever.  I guess if the charges were dropped they could possibly get away with not addressing the issue but that leaves the hospital with a lot of liability.

And talk about your conflict of interest if Glassman didn't tell anyone when he should have.

Honestly, this should happen.  He has crossed two very serious lines now. First when he went to the son of the patient and attacked him for which he was rightfully arrested.  Then, he learns nothing from being arrested and attacks Lea/her car??

The hospital would have to take serious action at this point if his attack on Lea's car becomes known.

One reason we thought this is because when he went to get it, his father was curious why and he said it was "clinging" to him.  Perhaps he thought he was meant to gift it to them.

  19. I will forgive Jon every stupid, assholish, selfish, childish thing he has done for ONE reason.

He rescued Collin and is trying to give that kid a chance at a happy life with family and love.

Kate has alienated Collin not only from herself, but from the other kids as well.  She sent him away for, IMO, was normal troubled child behavior.  She is selfish and, again IMO, has succeeded in parental alienation regarding Jon and the other kids.  Nothing Jon did was worth his kids turning against him except that Kate made it so.

I'm curious if you deal with the public at your desk?

Maybe it's a generational thing and a COL thing. Lol

I worked for many years at an insurance agency and then I worked in a large law firm, we were. allowed to have one small framed photo... No other personal items, vases, pictures, toys, games etc.

I work for the government, but don't meet the public at my desk.  So it's pretty much me and my co-workers.  Some people have a lot of stuff (in all generations) and some just prefer to have a minimal desk.

For me, I am at work more than anywhere else and find it helps me to have things to remind me of life on the outside.  lol  It makes the cubicle prison a little bit more bearable to have some cute, fun things reminding me that my paycheck does occasionally go for fun.

I do think they are still immature, because they are young. But I just don't think liking to have "collectibles" shall we say, means that one is not a trustworthy employee or less mature.  But I'm okay with people who do.  Unless they're my boss.

I think the Poldark crew was mainly there to make sure Kitty got off safely.  They implied that they felt she was still in danger (and rightly so since Caroline's blackmail attempt worked on George and but on the brothers).

Cecily agreed to leave.  She agreed to be separated from Geoffrey Charles to save his life.  She said that she was going to Honduras and Kitty said she was going to Jamaica.  So I think they Poldark's were just making sure that everyone left safely.  Just in case.
