  1. Sam ate leeches, cause he's too dumb to take or make fishhooks and use the leeches as bait. He's gonna win by being fat and doing nothing and it's going to kill all interest in the show. Randy was a fool for building a shelter when he should have been netting over 20 lbs of fish per day. He had to tap out, due to starvation.
  2. they got dropped in SUMMERTIME and you can build a FAR superior dugout shelter in 3 days, that needs no fire. The warm weather has to be utilized to the max by netfishing, or they'll starve out before winter ever arrives. None of these bunch of inepts is going to make it one month past the first hard freeze. HA, alan lasted 56 days. Many people have lasted much longer. season 2 went 65 days, season 3 went 86 days, with 4-5 people lasting over 2 months. season 4 went 74 days, with several people lasting longer than Alan did.
  3. It's the starvation, man. If they knew what to take and do, they'd have enough food (at least for 3 months) and they'd be busy. But they dont convert the 20x20 tarp into netting, they dont take a slingbow with 6 of the arrows featuring 4-tined fishing heads, so as to make 2 fishhooks out of each tine. They dont take the fishing kit as 8 big treblehooks, for catching wolves and coyotes. They dont braid the snarewire and use it to catch deer, . They dont take the Cold Steel shovel or the Signal multitool. They dont take the salt. If they were catching plenty of fish, they could boil the tree cambium, toss the water, then fry the cambium in fish oil. Then you CAN digest it well enough for it to be 1/3rd of your diet. Having those carbs helps your brain work properly. fish and game have no carbs, man. They dont take the 5 qt skillet and lid (amazon) they dont take the duct tape, or the hammock. Even in Mongolia, with 10% as much rain as Vancouver, they can't make a fire without a ferrorod! They "think" that they need a big saw and axe, when there's not much wood around, a cabin wont be warm enough and they are not allowed to cut trees larger than 8" in OD. The saw edge on the shovel can handle what little wood processing you need to do. You dont need to boil your drinking water, if you know to make a proper seep well and water filter.
  4. I've done 5 months in solitary confinement several times, no problems. I wrote letters to fellow survivalists and then tore them up and flushed them, cause I lacked the stamps to mail them. This show would be a cakewalk by comparison, believe me. These people just dont know what gear to take or what to do, that's all.
  5. almost none of the bs would be happening if they could properly feed themselves. It can be done, but you have to know what gear to take and what to do, and none of them does. They could make 1500 sq ft of 2" mesh netting out of 3/4 of the 20x20 tarp, leaving a 10x10 for shelter. Along with the 10x10 "camera" tarp, that's plenty, since mongolia does not get even 10% as much rain as Vancouver Island gets. Then you would not have to be taking down your shelter every time the medical team showed up. :-) That's still a lot of netting. 20x as much as they let you take as one of your 10 items. The allowed amount of paracord can't make any more netting than you can take, which is 75 sq ft of 1.5" mesh. (in other words, not worth taking that nettting, unless it's braided nylon cordage, or made of paracord. Mongolias spring, summer and fall total 4 months long. what would you plant that you could eat in that time, other than bean sprouts, which probably wont grow cause it aint warm enough. You'd have to take plastic and make green houses. There's a reason why almost nobody lives in Mongolia and those who do have to have large herds of animals in order to survive.
  6. Google says that it rarely even freezes on the shores of Vancouver island. No amount of wood is going to help them in Mongolia. They wont last even one month after the first hard freeze, cause they didn't make netting and catch enough fish the first month of the show. They should have caught 600 lbs of fish in that month.
  7. All seasons, they have been quite clueless about how important it is to have food intake, and not just protein, but carbs and fats. You need fats to keep your guts moving, and you need carbs to keep your brain working (worth a hoot) and you need such by the end of the first week, not well into the second month! Long before then, you are weak and cant think properly. They can get the same sort of subsistence permit that the Innuit and Native Americans get, which lets them take ANYTHING if it's needed for food. A simple google search shows that the tides on Vancouver Island's shores are 6 ft and in any case, you can drive some marker stakes out there and find out where the water never gets more than 4 ft deep, ya know.
  8. Pretend that a foot square of old sheet or shirt (not a t shirt, a button up shirt ) is a 1 sq ft of tarp. Make a 1" cut every 1/8" along one edge, once you know which way the weave is oriented. grab each little strip with a multitool's pliers and pull. Once you get a 6" long piece, you can use your bare hands. With a big chunk of tarp, you can stand on the rest of the tarp and tear off 10 ft long strips. Each sq ft of solid sheet material becomes 96 ft of 1/8" wide cordage in this fashion. A 20x 20 tarp is 400 sq ft. 400x 96 ft is 38,400 ft of cordage. If you want 2" mesh, you need 12 ft of cordage to make 1 sq ft of netting. divide 38,400x 12 and you're going to get over 2000 sq ft of 2" mesh netting, even allowing for the loss due to tying the knots. You can bet that the tarps that the Alone show leaves in the bush, covering your camera gear and other stuff, are the cheapest sylnon tarps available. Such tarps tear quite readily, once you start the tear with a cut. So you CAN make a LOT of netting, enough to make 2 big seines (for shallow water) and several baited net-weirs. Thus, you have very little risk of losing much of your netting to a flotsam log coming down the river. Stretch a seine across as much of the river as you can handle., with a weir at the junction of the seine and the shore. using a net bag full of rocks to anchor the end of the net, if you can't drive stakes into the (shallow) river's bottom. Go upstream 100m, use vertical stakes to help you walk another seine down to the seine-weir. Set the first seine at quite a bit of an "upstream" angle, of course. You''ll catch a lot of fish, guaranteed. Especially if you bait the head of the "v" formed by the first seine and the shoreline. Any fish caught can be put on a stringer or in a small net "pen" that you leave in the deepest part of river, until you're done seining for the day. Then the seine that you're walking with COULD be converted into another net weir ( baited with fishheads and guts). . A 15 ft diameter weir, with 100 ft of "wing" (the shore forming the other "wing" )can be set up in an hour or so, if the stakes that give the weir its shape are already driven into the river bottom and your net already has floats along the top line and rock weights along its bottom line. If your net floats, get more rocks, and bigger ones. It aint rocket science, folks. Put your bait into bags made of chunks of the tarp or chunks of the hammock, so that the fishhead/guts bait doesnt just dissolve or get nibbled away. Ditto, small bags should be used to bait your trotlines, for the same reasons. All this makes FAR more sense than building "cabins" or hauling lots of firewood. You dont really need the 5 qt skillet and lid, (amazon) you know. You can stone boil food in a chunk of tarp, lining a hole in the ground, with sand/gravel lining the tarp, to protect it from hot stones. If you make a seep well, with 2 ft tall, v like walls around it, (to keep out critters) and a tarp cover, to keep out bugs and bird poop, you can then make a sleeve sized tube out of hammock or tarp material, and fill it with layers of moss, gravel, sand and charcoal, with a bit of t-shirt keeping the charcoal from falling into your water. Seal the same by sewing it, and using pitch (or the tape). This filter need not hang vertially, so the seam does not really have to be waterproof down its full length, but it DOES have to not drip any leaks into your "filtered" water-container. The sleeves of the rainsuit will each hold over a gallon of water, you know. So you dont have to carry or go get water more than once every 2 days. Unlike with a silly 1 pint wooden bottle that takes you an entire day to make, the sleeve can be folded, tied off and taped in 2 minutes flat. Do NOT cut the sleeve off of the jacket! there's no need of that, and you can need that rainsuit to be intact. Just choke it off at the crotch or the armpit with a hunk of cordage.
  9. so? dont be stupid and be there without a projectile weapon. Arrowing a bear will win the show for you, and probably let you make as much more money "teaching" how to do such things. :-) I'd cheerfully take the 1 in 100 (or less) chance that a black bear will charge me after I arrow him. I'll also take the 1 in 10 chance that I can't handle him with my Cold Steel shovel. The great majority of black bears are sub 300 lbs, you know, even just prior to hibernation. There's many a 300+ lb MAN on the streets, and they can all be carrying knives and guns. I'd not be afraid to ambush any of the men with a bow. :-) Get one full inch wide of double edged, razor-like steel shoved thru your lung or heart, and SEE how much fighting you feel like doing! Dogs run down bears pretty easily. I once had to kick an English setter under the chin, 3 different times, as it very seriously tried to bite off my jewels. It had been gut-shot and wanted to take me to hell with it. It would be much easier to split a bear's wig with the shovel.
  10. He lost 80 lbs in 55 days. So what makes him any better than any other inept lardass?
  11. there's plenty of bandwidth here, and very little activity. So why does it matter?
  12. He's said that he was starving at his original site. It never even occurred to him to make a pontoon outrigger raft, so that he could get around an outcropping of rocks, to a better spot. He finally, after losing 25 lbs of bodyweight in a month, discovered that he could, at low tide, clamber over a lot of slimy boulders and reach a better foraging area. He didn't MOVE there, tho, cause he didnt dare try to move 70+ lbs of gear and clothing over those boulders. All he had to do was pick a calm half an hour on the sea, and paddle around the outcropping, with everything aboard the raft. You can build such a raft in a day. They give you lots of stuff that will float, so the" flotation-quotient" of local wood doesn't matter. You aint trying to cross the Atlantic with your little craft. You just want to be able to service your netting/and-sapling-framed crab traps, net-weirs and gillnets without getting soaked in cold water. Nothing keeps you from bringing a commercial fisherman's rainsuit, ya know! Dave's claimed that he lost no weight his second month, due to finding a natural crab trap in the kelp beds, and making a net out of a hunk of flotsam-rope. Well, you need at least 3000 calories per day for that, under those conditions, and it could EASILY be 4000+ per day, too. Top swimmers have to eat TEN thousand calories per day while in training and they aint fat! Do you think that they eat nothing but ice cream? So you CAN learn to eat 10+ lbs of food per day, folks. Only 1/4 of a crab's live weight is edible flesh and the flesh, ready to eat, is just 400 calories per lb. (google it, you'll see) So, he'd need to eat 8 lbs of crab per day, which means catching 32 lbs of crab, EVERY day. without crab traps! Now, if you "think" that's feasible, I"ve got a bridge in brooklyn that you need to buy! Let-s say that he caught 15 lbs of crab per day (very unlikely) . That's 4 lbs of edible flesh, 1600 lousy calories. So he'd need another 1400 calories, EVERY day, in order to not lose weight. Only a bit over half of a fish or animals' live weight is edible flesh and fish, ready to eat, is just 600 calories per lb. So he'd have to eat 2.5 lbs of fish per day, along with the crab, which would mean that he had to catch 5 lbs of fish, every day. Now, if you CAN do that, with netting made from a bit of rope, why could you NOT catch a LOT more fish and crabs, with the 4000 sq ft of 2" mesh netting that you can make out of the 20x20 tarp and local vegetation, hmm? So Dave's fos.

    Afterwards

He's got lots of videos up on his channel . He's not normally upset at all. He's that way because of the starvation and frustration, both of which come from his ineptitude.
  14. resulting in starvation. EVERYONE has averaged losing at LEAST 1/2 lb per day. So what makes YOU special, eh? What have you got to lose by trying radically different gear and tactics? Nothing, that's what, and if they DO succeed, letting you win by NOT losing any weight, you'll clear at least twice as much money as anyone else, cause everyone, all over the world, will want to learn from you.
  15. If sam wins by doing nothing, it's going to kill the show. So they might disallow that bs, which might let Larry win. The others have no chance. cause Dave's used up all his bodyfat trying to hunt, Britt's wasted a lot of it on a shelter that he'll never need, cause he's going to starve out before winter really hits, just like Randy did. The nice shelter is a waste of energy and precious time, when you need to be catching 20+ lbs of fish per day, by making netting out of the 20x20 tarp and using it properly. Those cabins will need a lot of firewood in order to handle winter, and they wont have the energy to go get it. If they knew to get into a small dugout, basically grave-size, with a foot thick of compressed grass all around, they could maybe last a month, tops. But none of them know that much and none of them knew to bring the Cold Steel shovel. Fowler was the only one with even that much sense and even he later said that he should have skipped the axe. Mongolia has nothing like the big wood that is all over Vancouver island, so you dont need a big saw. Just modify one edge of the E tool, until you've got 8" of saw blade on that edge. Saws used to be made by hand, you know. It's not that hard if you've got a Dremel hand-held grinder (or the $15 copy of same sold by Harbor Freight tools). A vice, hammer, punch and $20 caliper are all you need to offset the teeth, so you can get a real kerf. Flatten out the curve of the shovel a bit on that side, and you can cut 2" deep before the curve of the shovel stops you. You're not allowed to cut live trees bigger than 8" OD on this show. Cut 2" deep all the way around an 8" OD tree or log, and you can break it with your bodyweight. This works far better than trying to create a dugout with a saw or axe. :-) Inside such a shelter, your body heat and the insulation wont let your drinking water freeze, and you CAN arrange for your dried meat and fish to freeze, if you want and if you've got enough of it to need the extension of its edible-time. Remember, you are clearing at least $3000 a day and if you win by being the only guy to not lose any weight, you'll make another clear 1/4 million by selling endorsements, vids, classes and books. So you have to learn to control your mind for a week at a time, so what? Come out, melt and boil some ice/snow,fill up the rainsuit (7+ gallons) and go back inside your dugout for another week. You wont have to be in there more than a month, guaranteed. You wont be eating more than 3 lbs of fish per day, and maybe a lb of boiled and fried cambim to go with it, so there wont be much in the way of feces to deal with. Make a waste container out of the tarp and tape, inside of a basket you make. Dry out things with dirt. Empty the container when you come out for water. There are many reasons why you need to take the duct tape, guys. Not needing a fire in your shelter is a tremendous advantage over what the know-nothings will have.
  16. you can make 2 fishhooks out of each tine, 4 tines per arrow. After you remove the tines, the arrow is a blunt, still effective vs small game and birds. THIS guy says that his customize gear was ok'd for the show. Custom knives and clothing have been allowed, as well as a needle bent to look like a fishhook, and a modified multtool was allowed (both by Fowler, of season 3) Fowler says that he's cleared it with the producers to take a slingbow. You can make baked clay balls to use in the slingbow, it's handier than a bow, and you can use it from inside your shelter, unlike a regular bow. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=chief+aj's+slingbow+grizzly+
  17. no, the stretcher-case was Nicole. Larry;'s inept. He could make effective mousetraps several ways, but the best is a "bucket" made by first making a basket out of vines or shoots, lining it with a hunk of tarp, and putting a roller stick across the top/center of the bucket and fill the bucket halfway with water. . Make some wooden ramps that let the rodents easily get to the ends of the roller log. Out in the center of the roller stick, put some sort of sticky bait, like shredded, salted cambium mixed with fish guts. The mice/chipmunks go out on the stick, fall into the bucket and drown. This trap "resets" its self. If they manage to steal the bait, make a wooden disk, about 3" in diameter, to go around the stick, centered on the stick. When they try to get over THAT, they'll fall for sure.
  18. bs, bs, bs, Randy just starved himself by not netfishing, wasting time on a cabin that he was never going to need. Anyone could see that. That's what's going to get Brit, too. Daves' wasting too much energy hunting, instead of fishing. So it's going to come down to Larry and Sam. I dont think Larry has what it takes, in the way of bodyfat. He's certainly not able to handle the foraging and the mice.
  19. If you feed yourself properly, via the netfishing and cambium (properly prepped) you dont have anywhere near the pressures on you to quit. Lots of these guys pretend to be "survival instuctors", so they just want the free advertising on TV. I'd run far away from them as my "instructors" for such stuff. The practice the wrong things, man. Like primitive fire, primitive shelter, primitive fishing, flintknapping. You can carry 2 lbs of stuff that make you WAY better off than the most skilled man at such stuff, cause the resources are often not where you need them. Then all that ability means nothing. You can easily be too injured or ill to do such stuff, too. So no thanks, I"ll carry a multi-tool, modified SOL escape bivvy, a bugnet bag to deal with the condensation, and a UCO candle lantern (beeswax candles only). For this show, they have tarps, sleeping bag, all sorts of good stuff. So there's no need of primitive anything. Sam COULD have made a stake and rock weir in the river, which will at least suffice to slow down the fish, so that he could club or spear them. He could make gorge hooks out of wood, bone, or thorns. He could make up to 4000 sq ft of 4" mesh netting out of the 20x20 tarp, and then weave in splits of local shoots, vines, roots, reeds to convert the netting into 2" mesh. when you are using it as a seine or fish weir, the fact that the fish can see the netting doesn't matter. An occasional failure of such primitive "cordage" here and there wont matter, either. If Sam wins by being fat and doing nothing, it's going to kill off the show. Nobody's going to be interested anymore.
  20. She had no skills to speak of. All she did was lay around in her sleeping bag. If she'd known to take a multitool instead of a beltknife, and a Cold Steel shovel (with a saw edge) instead of axe and saw, she could have heated the shovel red hot on a back corner, where the loss of temper would not matter, used the shovel to heat the hook red hot, and used the hook itself to cauterize the wound. Use the needlenose pliers of the multitool to force the hook on around, in the direction that it's headed, cut off the eye of the hook and pull it out. Use boiling water to sterilize a hunk of t shirt, with which to wrap the wound vs contamination, use the duct tape to secure the cloth in place. So she was neither all that determined, nor knowledgable. wasting two weeks of net-fishing time on that cabin is what messed over his chances. You only have a month or so of really good fishing and he blew half of it on that cabin. Dumb move, man. This aint Vancouver Island, where it rarely freezes on the shoreline. Those fish stay in the lakes for all but at most 2 months of the year. A simple google search would have told them that, before going on the show.
  21. If you catch enough fish, you can first boil the cambium, toss away the water, then fry the stuff in fish oil. It can then be about 1/3rd of your diet, providing a change in taste and texture, some fiber and carbs, without locking up your guts. Fish and game offer no carbs and the lack of carbs ruins your ability to think (worth a hoot).
  22. You can use the 10x10 "camera" tarp as shelter, if you rig it to come down swiftly when you see/hear the medical team coming. Or "only' have 1500 sq ft of 2" netting made out of the 20x20 tarp, saving 10x10 ft of the sheeting to use as a shelter. Until first frost, all you want or need is a simple tarp shelter. you can, however, be cutting and piling the grass into one big "shock". If you do this properly, only the top 3-4" will get wet. Mongolia only gets about 10% as much rain as Vancouver Island and the grass is everywhere. You should also, of course, assemble the forked poles that hold up the ridgepole, said pole and the perlins. Also, use the Cold Steel shovel to dig some small diameter, 2 ft deep holes, to ensure that the spot you pick for the dugout has enough dept of dirt for the 2 ft deep dugout shelter. Set this up where the sod chunks (1.5 x 1.5 ft square) are easily cut and stacked into walls 1 ft all around your 2x4x8 dugout). Then have the ridgepole be a foot higher than the tops of your "walls". Put sod on the perlins, then about a foot of densely packed grass, to provide insulation but very little weight) then cover the grass with loose earth. cover the earth with the 10x10 tarp, weigh down the tarp with wood and stake its edges. Stuff the dugout with dried grass. with the sleeping bag, you certainly wont need a fire in the shelter, and might well not even need the bag, given that you have 2 sets of clothes, 2 sets of longjohns, a wool sweater, a beanie, gloves, mittens, a hoodie. Stuff dry grass between all those layers and you wont need the sleeping bag, if you can think of something more valuable to take, from the limited list of gear. Make the entrance just 1.5x1.5 ft and (mostly) plug it with the camera case and backpack (stuffed with dry grass. Plug the holes with loose dirt, and have pointed stakes embedded to slow down any wolf or bear that wants to get at you and your stored food. Then you can use the slingbow to drive an arrow into his chest/face, and have your spear ready, too. Fill the rainsuit legs and sleeves with water. with your bodyheat and all that grass, it wont freeze, and neither will your dried food, unless you want some of it to freeze. If the latter is the case, simply put the tarp containers of food outside of the grass, near the vent holes. Before you hole up (for a week at a time, preferably, if you can control your mind) dig a 2x2x4 ft hole. when you need to melt/boil ice/snow, simply line the hole with a chunk of tarp or hammock, pile in the snow/ice and add the heated stones. they might let ONE guy like me on the show, but never 2 such people. They want the show to end at 2 months and NEVER go past 3 months, cause it cuts into their profit margin at that point. I've applied for every season since the first one. But I'm not female, transgender, or a minority and I've got no sob story. So I dont have any chance of getting onto the show. This show is very carefully set up to NEVER go past 4 months, and almost never past 3 months, by somebody who REALLY knows what's what. Then the casting people carefully select the weakest, most inept people that they can find.
  23. You can make 2 fishhooks out of every tine on the 4-tined fishing arrowheads. So take 6 of the 9 arrows as such fishing arrows. Take the fishing kit as 8 BIG treble-hooks, like they use to catch sharks. Hang them 5 ft in the air, to encourage gulping. Bait them with a salted fish-head each and tie them to a drag log. A couple of 40 lb coyotes or an 80 lb wolf can win the show for you. Bait the snare wire (4 strands) and set it to snare deer. Hang the loop 6-7 ft in the air (depending upon the size of the deer) 18" of loop, horizontally on 3 hunks of monofilament fishline. If you can't wire it to a stout enough, tall enough tree to strangle the deer, hook the loop to a drag log. About a foot above the center of the loop, hang some shredded, salted cambium, or some other item that the deer will eat. Around each treble-hook set and snare, have lots of 6" loops of wire, held 2-3" off of the ground, on forked stakes. Have some of them horizontal and some vertical. Hook these to a drag-log, of course. The more entangled the critter becomes, the more likely you are to recover it. (before the coyotes have slobbered and peed all over it).
  24. They wasted 2 weeks+ on the cabins, etc, precious time when the water's warm enough for the fish to not be in the deep lakes. Those shallow rivers freeze solid, so the fish come into them no earlier than early summer and leave again in early fall. They should have made lots of netting out of the 20x20 tarp and been catching 20+ lbs of fish per day, on average. Some days twice that. They only have 6 weeks at most and need to secure at least 600 lbs of fish and game, or Sam will beat them just by laying around. The shelter to be using there, once it has frozen hard, is a 4x4x8 dugout. Stuff it with grass and you wont need a fire in it. They are going to burn off the last of their bodyfat trying to cut and haul enough wood to heat those cabins! Larry's inept, that's all. In an hour at most, he could make a basket out of willow shoots or vines, line it with a chunk of tarp, poke some holes in the tarp and presto, dipnet, sufficient to catch fish that are already hooked, at least. I'd just club them, or reach down and get them by one gill and their mouth. He could also easily make a mousetrap that would fix his problems in that regard, catch chipmunks. Make a basket about 12" wide and at least 15" tall. Line it with a chunk of tarp. Run a roller stick across the top of the bucket, baited in the center of the stick. Rig up a couple of ramps that let the rodents easily access the top edge of bucket, at the ends of the roller. They'll crawl out on the stick, fall in and drown. Make a paste out of smashed up cambium, fish and salt for bait, if you can't find anything else that will stick to the roller stick.
