  1. Yeah, knowing what happened in the books a lot more happened than is ever shown or discussed. And yeah my filling in the blanks includes some cleaning was done. I try not to think too hard about it
  2. Same! I assumed that the Nathan Hale quote was picked up from American soldiers. I could easily see them wryly joking about it while recovering.
  3. Glaze, I definitely think they will have Simon in there somewhere. And I expect to see plenty of Rupert and Angus and Willie since they were so popular this season.
  4. I never got the impression that Frank cheated on Claire during the war. I think he was trying to tell her he would love her even if she had after seeing a man (ghost?) watching her through the window. I'm sure Frank and Claire saw plenty of colleagues during the war being unfaithful. My impression was he was just trying to open the door to communication as they continued to reconnect.
  5. That's pretty much my list too, but I have a feeling they will condense some of the France stuff a bit more and sadly yes do a BJR softer side. And as Ron has said, there will be more Frank. Which is why I fear they will cut Lallybroch, or definitely shorten it, along with condensing France
  6. I forgot about that! Good point about including that as a way to use Frank. Last night while I was trying to figure out how to include Tobias as much as possible (not that I want to, but assuming Ron does) I actually realized he could be shoehorned in throughout a good chunk of the season.
  7. I was thinking a lot about next season last night and I think instead of a wishlist, I really need to think in terms of speculation. I can see from this past season what is important to Ron, which isn't necessarily the same things that speak to me. He definitely seemed to like the spectacle and dramatic stuff, often the stuff I skim or skip on rereads, as opposed to the smaller more interesting (to me) moments that I love to revisit. Don't get me wrong, overall I liked what he did with the show. Once I learned to stop worrying about the non book readers (but they won't understand!), it helped me a lot. That and remembering that I do always have my books to turn back to. So I had made out a list of things that I would love to see, but then as I rethought what he would do I amended it. I think keeping my expectations in check will help me enjoy the show more. Ron has said more Frank. Honestly I like Frank. I think he's a good, decent man. And a very human one. I don't personally blame him for his infidelities after Claire came back because she really didn't come back as a wife to him. She acknowledges as much. And as much as I would love to see far more Jamie, I am guessing based on this season I'm not going to get it, at least not what I want of it. So keeping my books close and just going to try to enjoy the rest. I do hope we start as the book starts because it was such a shocker to me. So I see that as the first episode. I assume we will get a lot of Paris intrigue, the stillbirth and hospital work and Fergus, although I really hope no BJR and Fergus, at least not fully realized. I do think we will have the BJR/Jamie fallout, and I assume there will be more to it than even in the book so Tobias will be utilized more. And of course the separation with Claire. Alex and Mary and BJR. The old fox. Prestonpans and Culloden I assume since those are big spectacles. I am worried he will skip Lallybroch altogether, but again I have my book so I can read the lovely bits there. I am really hoping they end it the same as the book, especially the bit with Geillis and Roger. I expect some amazing costuming and dazzling French Court scenes. I guess my rambling is to just keep my expectations in check, and enjoy what is put out there. I definitely think Ron & Co did an amazing job with the first season, he just chose to pick out and spotlight different parts than I would.
  8. I love all the books, some more than others. I think one of the issues people have with the other books is the large number of characters. While it is always to some degree the Jamie and Claire show, more and more time is spent with others. Also, much like a long running show, sometimes the plotlines get a bit repetitive and/or convoluted. Overall I love the series and tend to forget quickly the parts I am bored by or don't care for. When I look at all the books as a whole its been a fabulous ride so far!
  9. I get what some of you are saying about the20 year gap being hard, and the addition of other characters. But if any of you have watched Game of Thrones, or even if you have just noticed how successful it is, you know that people don't always jump ship just because things don't stay the expected course. I have never read Game of Thrones, but was hooked on the show early on and then have been devastated and knocked for a loop more often than not. I swear to my husband that I will give the show up, but every season there I am watching. I'm thinking, and hoping, that Outlander will continue to follow the books instead of veering off. I'm a huge fan of the Outlander books even though I really hate parts. Of course I hate that they are separated for so long, it was a gut punch when I first read it. But the books still reeled me in and told an overall amazing story that wouldn't have been the same. Sure, Claire could have stayed in the cave with Jamie, or hung out at Lallybroch, assuming she survived the difficult birth. Heck, she could have found a way to convince them all to flee to America instead of stay in Scotland during the rising. But those would have been different stories. I'm ok with how this one plays out, and I'm guessing that other fans will be too. No doubt some will jump ship when the strapping scene happens...7 years ago when I first read Outlander I almost stopped then. Took me a while to pick the book up again and I was really upset about it for a long time. But there will be others who ride it out and keep going with the story. At the end of the day it is an awful scene, but still not half as bad as most of the hugely popular Game of Thrones. Same with the 20 year gap. Some will hate it and be horrified and gut punched by it. Others will look beyond it and appreciate that romance and passion aren't only for 20 year olds. Those of us in our 40s and beyond will appreciate that there is something showing just how hot and amazing romance can be as we age! Is it spring yet?
  10. They were collecting the rents that the tenants who didn't make it to the Gathering owed to Colum.
  11. I lent my book to my friend who is taking way too long with it. Can someone here who has the book tell me if they refer to the British as the redcoats in the book? That point is driving me nuts every time they say it because I had a history teacher who drove home to us (way back when) that they weren't called redcoats during that time, they were called, "regulars" or "lobsterbacks." That it was later that redcoat was referred to.
  12. I see a lot of you complaining about not enough Jamie, and I agree to a point. But I also remember reading the book for the first time 8 years ago and I was very mixed then and didn't know Jamie was supposed to be the male lead at that point. I remember being so anxious for Claire to get back to Frank, who I believed she genuinely loved. I remember being a bit intrigued by Dougal and even thinking at one point he and Claire might get together. All of this I see in the show. And I actually think Sam is doing an amazing job as Jamie. At different points he shows his youth, his age, his vulnerability, his strength, his humor, and his moral code. He hasn't been in as much as Claire, but he wasn't early on in the book. After the marriage that changes and I expect to see/learn a lot more about Jamie and am well looking forward to it!!!!
  13. See I had a very sympathetic view of Frank in book one. I spent a good portion of that book hoping for her to find a way back to the stones and back to him. So for me, the show is portraying Claire and Frank's relationship exactly as I saw it originally from reading. Of course Jamie eventually won me over, but I really all along felt awful for Frank. I think the two of them would have had a happy life together. Of course, I didn't like him all that much in future books, but I think that things had changed for him, too. The way he was with Bree showed the loving man he still was, but Claire pushed him away as much as him straying.
  14. An interesting thing I learned recently on a mansion tour in Newport, Rhode Island addressed this. While I am sure there is some definite size differences from women now vs then, they also pointed out it isn't as great as you would think. A lot of it has to do with the fact that clothes were usually passed along to different women or worn out from use. If there was a smaller than average woman who couldn't pass along clothes, those are the clothes which have survived to us today.
  15. Blue Girl, part of her outspokenness was to keep herself safe...using her best hospital ward matron voice/attitude that kept soldiers in line during the war. Also just partly her personality.
