Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
stillshimpy replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
I'm with you on this one. Not because it's unfair to Ivanka to be called on trying to dupe women into thinking her miscreant of a father is anything other than a misogynist, but because there were other passengers there, and they don't actually deserve it. Then also, I'm actually not okay with roping anyone's kids into the proceedings if they aren't participatory adults in the whole thing. Ivanka is complicit, Jared is a waste of skin and is complicit, but man, I'm not okay with people acting like that on a plane, no matter what the thing spurring them on. I think Ivanka is a disgusting human being on many levels but that wasn't the appropriate venue because other people still count....including her children. I know that makes me sort of a wimp but I'm really okay with that level of "Yup, I will retain some standards here, no matter how much I detest a particular person and everything about them." I hope everyone is having a good day, no matter what you do, or do not celebrate. We're having a wonderfully slow day around these parts.- 8.1k replies

Oh wow, the look on her face is just precious. She's lovely, thank you for sharing that picture. Now I need to go and figure out whose creme brulee dishes I have in my home. There's some kind of neighborhood tradition here, where you give your neighbors part of what you've made. It's incredibly kind but these didn't come with a tag of any sort. They are the actual "put these under the broiler" type of dishes, so I need to figure out who I'm returning them to. This will be our Christmas Eve: Hi, neighbor! Here, have some of these things I purchased because I didn't bake this year...say, do I have any Pyrex dishes of yours, by any chance? It'll be festive!

Whatever you do, or do not celebrate, may you all have reason to be joyous at this time of year. 2016 took a lot from all of us, but thanks, in part, to all of you, my faith in humanity didn't quite die on the table back in the beginning of November. Oh sure, it's been on life-support ever since but I'll take what I can get :-)

How could I have forgotten that great healer? Doctor Fabio Hair and his limited thesaurus did, indeed, declare Trump's health to be robust in a bigly way, all the best ways, using words that sound suspiciously like it was dictated to him by a certain puffy-eyed, Nectarine Narcissist.- 8.1k replies

I'm actually not trying to fat-shame but yes, he does look like he's put on weight. Plus, whatever puffy thing he always has going on around his eyes isn't exactly the indicator of robust health either. Among the eight thousand other things that he apparently didn't consider before running for the presidency, such as what the job actually entails, a small part of me takes a bit of satisfaction in knowing that his vanity is likely to take a giant hit, as it is not a position that tends to do anything other than age the hell out of people doing it. It's not much, but at least we'll have a tiny bit of revenge on that vainglorious turd in watching the complete destruction of his exterior. Pity that it will come at the expense of his destruction of our actual country.- 8.1k replies

I see that last night's "Huh, wonder what the hell I ingested at dinner?" thing did actually turn out to be a fever dream which is all for the best. Yeah, my favorite part was when he was attempting to gaslight her, as she tried to explain what gaslighting was as he continued to say, "How does that threaten the sovereignty of a religion, that's ridiculous!" and replying, "What does that even mean?" over and over as she very clearly, concisely, and in the face of almost stunning levels of sexist condescension, would not be deterred from her point by his idiocy. Another favorite part was "She looks like she smells like Vanilla? Now who's objectifying women?!?" Tucker Carlson: an entire career built on pretending that a debate technique is willfully misunderstanding someone's meaning over and over, and then he went on to mock her for a piece about a singer's boots, like that in any way negated the point of a political piece. "You talked about fashion!! In a magazine conceived of partly to do just that!! I've never heard of a woman being able to do more than one thing, therefore I'll pretend that cancels out any other pieces you've ever done....because you said something about shoes! This is my idea of an intellectual counterpoint! I'm still employed, isn't just fucking amazing?" He knows bloody well that freedom from religious persecution is one of the founding principles of our country, so feigning disbelief in that "How does that challenge the sovereignty of...." was yet another layer of slime on all of that. Although attempting to gaslight her in the middle of the "what does it mean.....no it doesn't mean that...." might go down in history as some kind of captured object lesson. As a friend of mine on facebook relayed about a conversation he had on with someone (and it was political) he ended it with, "Keep piecing of shitting, my man" and boy does it ever apply to Tucker Carlson.

So let me get this straight, the blatantly racist, misogynist with hyper-specific bestiality-themed revenge fantasies that he wants to make absolute sure are preserved forever, on the digital record, as part of his professional legacy is on a school board? Well, that's one way to encourage people to home school. Gadzukes.- 8.1k replies

Yowza. All political party leanings aside, he's deranged. Spiffy. We'll just rename the White House Bedlam to just get it over with already, as we await whatever terrible price we're going to have to pay for having a complete lunatic at the helm.- 8.1k replies

Yes, yes it is wildly different, as a matter of fact. For one thing, she isn't attempting to hide behind religious intolerance to justify bigotry and discrimination in order to break the law. She's not even saying she won't perform <---- ahoy! A very key difference! Why one might even be moved to say, it's the antithesis of what you're citing and would be accurate in doing so, no less. What she is saying, and the thing that people are saying is that she's not happy about it. Plus, Mike Pence and his twisted mind and other stunted parts, supports a torturous form of conversion therapy for people who are gay, so she's actually objecting to human rights violations as opposed to citing, "I misunderstand the basic tenets of Christianity and for some reason don't get that citing Leviticus as biblical proof is positively risible for the people who seem to live on bacon, but that is neither here nor there, also, totally fucking missed the memo about how it isn't my place to judge anyone! Woooooo! Discrimination!!" as a reason she doesn't wish to do something....which she plans on doing....unhappily, but at no point does she say, "Not gonna! Wah! The lord!" So those are a few key differences. The other would be, again, sort of importantly, it's a democracy, she's allowed to disagree with that Goldplated Jackass's .....everything.- 8.1k replies

S'all right, we already know that we're being gifted with made-up news, Kokapetl. You can turn it into a drinking game. "Hey, I wonder what outrageously untrue bullshit they've made up today on this fake news site?" only to preserve your actual life, it's best to set the rules at "only drink when you find something true". This way you can be the designated driver over the holidays as you'll be stone-cold sober all the way through New Year's and beyond. If you decide to drink every time you find something patently absurd, it's really best to get your affairs in order before clicking, as your liver will almost certainly fail within the first hour. That's if you're drinking wine coolers, anything harder than that and you'll be exploring the final frontier within 5-15 minutes, depending on your tolerance. Those of us with Celtic ancestry will likely be exceptionally drunk, but alive and exceptionally belligerent by the one hour mark, so if you're Scottish, Irish, or Welsh, you may want to keep in mind the actual battle-cry of William Wallace, no, not frrreeeeedddoooom! but rather, "Ah'll make a belt outta ye!" as that's actually what Wallace did to the dude that killed his wife. He then wore it for the remainder of his life. See? Those links are festive in that, "Oh hooray, disembowelment for my mind!" kind of way. Season's Greetings!!- 8.1k replies

I wouldn't worry about Phoebe's job status after that, if the Rockettes dump her for that, the entire theatre community on Broadway is likely to open their doors and offer positions. The cast of Hamilton is in a glorious, lovely, I-adore-them war with our Tantrum-throwing-Tangerine-elect so, to put it mildly, the arts community is far more like to lay down the "Sorry you were fired for speaking your mind, come this way, we need a hoofer!" welcome mat. It's a community that is very likely to support her because the Apricot Homophobe is set to strip many in their community of the basic rights of a human being in our society. If anything happens from this, she'll get the "welcome to the right side of history, Phoebe" from her peers for that, and for being awesome. Scott Baio (however the hell that has-been's name is spelled) and Antonio Sabatto Jr. (the never-was) can play American the Beautiful on kazoos and reenact scenes from Charles in Charge. It sort of doesn't matter to me, as I'd choose death first over watching those destroyers of democracy get sworn in, lying their asses off every moment. Protect and uphold, oh hardy har. Maybe Pence's vengeful sky bully will smite the fuck out of them.- 8.1k replies

Well, this has taken a turn into Awkward Thanksgiving Dinner. Whatever mutant offspring of George Clooney survives the coming end times will play the lead in the inevitable biopic. Gender really won't matter by then, so we could be talking about either candidate. Best attempt at a "How 'bout them Bears?" segue.

No, that's not accurate either. It does suggest, however, that they don't find those things disqualifying events which means whether they find them distasteful or not, they think those things are okay in the president. In 2016. Acceptance doesn't equal approval but it also suggests a lack of disapproval. As stated elsewhere, there will have been lifelong Republicans who voted for Trump because they are Republicans and nothing about Hillary Clinton is interchangeable with the Republican viewpoint when it comes to the role of the federal government. A goodly percentage of Trump's voters are going to follow under that category and they probably told themselves, "Who the hell knows what most presidents have said in private?" and that was all. By the same token, there's literally nothing that Hillary could have done to woo them over to her side because that's a core belief difference. However, the loyal base isn't enough to have gotten Trump elected by itself, so then we are left with the people who don't find racism and sexism to be bad enough things to disqualify a presidential candidate. I'm going to go ahead and step away from this one now, as I'm just making the same point at this juncture: Hillary Clinton is not to blame for the internalized misogyny of an individual voter. That is their issue and they need to heal themselves, nothing she could have done or said would have done it.

Okay, but Donald Trump displayed every repugnant, disgusting, vulgar and bullying tendency in the world. On camera. Repeatedly. This was not an election that was won based on being likable. He's a vile human being and was praised for it. That's the gobsmacker. "He's just telling it like it is, he's not afraid to speak the truth!" Fuckadoodledoo. Imagine, just for a moment if Hillary had attempted to employ his winning strategies. The actual winning strategies from this campaign. The answer is not that she wasn't likable enough, judging by that Thing that won, the very opposite, be as repulsive as a human being can be. The road victory had nothing to do with being likable.

Quoted for truth and because it can't be said enough. Again, entirely true. Trying to criticize Hillary for not being able to meet whatever constantly fluid, absolutely absurd "wonder what it will be today?" standard people wanted her to be held to is ignoring the much, much, MUCH larger and definitive problem that the other candidate wasn't being held to any standards at all. There's no strategy that can compete with that because it's fucking insane. There is no voter outreach that can combat that complete abandonment of anything resembling logic. He's a racist. He's a misogynist. He campaigned on a platform that is against absolutely everything this country was actually founded on by promising religious persecution and a hatred of immigrants. About stripping women of their rights and this list just goes on. If all of that didn't disqualify him in the eyes of voters, that's not on Hillary. That's on them because it is the embodiment of societal ills, not anything to do with Hillary Clinton.

Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
stillshimpy replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
It's true, it can happen anywhere. It's not weak to be taken off-guard by completely horrible behavior in another person, by the way. Sometimes I feel absolutely dazed by the necessity of trying to figure out things like this: Okay, how should I act if and when horribly racist stuff goes down on my watch? Should I "Cry 'havoc!', and let slip the dogs of war?" That's certainly the more likely scenario, knowing me. These are not questions I thought I'd have to answer in any kind of action plan. Although, without going into all the reasons I know this already, I don't know if I'd be able to do the right de-escalating thing. I'm just trying to make sure I at least know what I'm supposed to do, to keep the person being attacked safest. -
Yes, and Illinois actually went to Clinton. Missouri did not. My old stomping grounds of Colorado went to Clinton, although I lived there for 26 years and knew it would be close because that's also the seat of the Evangelical movement, Focus on the Family (an organization I have tremendous antipathy for) and the puketastic Promise Keepers, it's also a state where almost everyone is from somewhere else. Minnesota always went blue which made me glad for them too. That's it in the fly-over midwestern states. Traditionalism in the midwest played a giant role in this election. White women from those states ended up making the difference. It's great that Chicago, an actually metropolitan city has so many outspoken women, but you know, it's not as if being an outspoken woman is some new concept to me. I've never been accused of being a peacemaker, or someone who makes nice for the sake of it either and in this election, it wasn't actually in question as to whether or not Illinois was part of the reason Hillary lost because she won Illinois. I've been accused of a lot of things in my life, but being meek, mild, unopinionated or stupid has really never been among them. None of that alters the fact that white women made the winning difference for Trump. It's horrifying and it is also true. I'm talking about why that is, not the temperament of the average Chicagoan. Go forth, make noise, god knows I do. But why did women elsewhere, who should have said, "Finally, it's about fucking time....." and pulled that lever for Hillary vote for the Orange Misogyny Stain? Feistiness of the good women of Chicago taken as a given, it is due in great part to the fact that white midwestern women largely rejected her. As did the people of Pennsylvania, another place I used to live and that didn't shock me even a tiny bit, sadly enough. That state is a sexist's paradise. There were states that went blue in the last election that switched to red. That normally wouldn't matter, as some of those states flip-flop back and forth all the time. It's just when the candidate for the GOP is every form of appalling thing and is wildly unqualified vs. the most qualified person in the United States to ever run for president, something uncomfortable is afoot in the decision-making process.

Because they voted for someone who campaigned on the premise that we don't need to treat each other fairly. They voted for someone who promised to harass and persecute my fellow citizens and I don't care what rationalizations made that possible for them, the end result is the same: If a person supports a racist agenda, it doesn't matter to me whether or not they believe themselves to be hateful and racist, they've just made hateful racists more powerful in this country and we're stuck dealing with that fallout. I could keep going on here, like how they threw away with both hands, every value I ever taught my son about what it means to be a decent human being. Because the only hope I have right now is that maybe, just maybe there will be something left of the world that is worth saving when the destructionists that they just put into power are somehow ousted. Because we're all regarding the ruination of democracy -- Gingrich talking about presidential pardons if you break the law of the land, good god -- thanks to whatever motivated them. They already got on board the, "We're down with treating other people unfairly" train of their volition. I didn't put them there, but I'm not going to pretend they did anything other than buy their own ticket to ride that express. It doesn't mean they are demonic, or evil, but they were okay with enabling these behaviors and it will forever distance us from each other.

No, actually, I'm not referring to people from the country, although I met a lot of people from the rural areas of Missouri, I'm talking about the women I met in St. Louis. Every last one of them had a college degree and there was a certain time of year where you were to set mums out on your doorstep. I don't know why. Never did it, but got comments about it, had mums dropped off on my doorstep by people who assumed I didn't know. Most cities are populated with people from other places, so there is very little geographical identity. Not St. Louis though, that was a womb-to-tomb place (born there, die there). It was bizarre. It wasn't just a case of "we participate in these traditions" they were so weirded out that I didn't. Also, I have naturally very dark brown hair, that I don't dye, combined with very fair skin and good lord, did I ever get comments on my coloring. Anything different is regarded askance. I'm no stranger to the fact that people are somewhat alarmed by obviously intelligent women and I know that you're right, that it was probably necessary to pander. It just wasn't going to work for Hillary. She tried and was accused of being insincere. This will never be her fault. ETA: and my core sense of loyalty to decency makes me hasten to point out, they were incredibly kind to me, even if they viewed me as some kind of non-meat-eating exotic pet. I won't even go into how oddly my husband was treated for not eating meat, but I swear to you, it bordered on farcical.

stillshimpy replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
I'm sure everyone will die of shock, but I completely lack a flight instinct and possess an incredibly strong fight instinct. That's how I feel too, plus, I've had theater training so I can really hit the fucking back rows when I feel like it. That said, behavioral experts caution against doing that, as it will actually escalate the problem. What is advised it to completely ignore the person doing the incredibly horrible thing and instead, go to the person being shouted at, get between the two, ignore the racist, garbage human, and talk to the person being attacked about something else. Yeah, I know, it is against my nature too. I very much possess a "not on my watch" type of personality, and I'm not even sure I could do it, but that's supposed to be the most helpful thing to do. What the ranter is spoiling for is a fight, don't give it to them. That's the thinking. I feel like like I should probably have a sock drawer stuffed with bail money because no way could I have just stood there and let this crap go on. But in the interest of trying to help the actual person being attacked, that's the prescribed method. The fact that I live in California makes it far less likely that I'll ever be confronted by this kind of behavior. I don't have it in me to stand by, but I'm telling myself daily that I owe it to the persecuted to do the most helpful thing for them.- 8.1k replies

Yup, and about fourteen other, entirely accurate, "That man makes me want to projectile vomit" descriptors that are completely fitting and he's still better than Trump. Don't get me wrong, it's a terrifying thought but Twitler, the Tanger-Tool-of-Vlad, is just that bad.
-
Aside from a few, "Oh man, that sucks" morning-after scenarios, I've honestly never been alarmed by a candidate that won from an opposing party. This isn't about being a liberal, or that I've voted the Democratic ticket my entire adult life and have some kind of sour-grapes going, I swear this is how bad it is: please, bring on Pence who I loath in such a huge variety of ways, who I think is dangerous in his own right and would like to reenact The Handmaid's Tale in his heart-of-hearts. Even that scary, puritanical misogynist with his warped notions is a much better bet than Trump. This has nothing to do with parties and everything to do with Trump being so woefully unqualified, so completely immune to wanting to learn anything about the job he pursued for years, he presents an actual physical danger to our world. He has a complete inability to understand that other cultures function differently and that braying and bullying will not help anything. That we're always on thin ice with our actual allies as it is, as many of those allies aren't actually very fond of us, for the very things that Trump embodies (arrogance, unwillingness to see the worth in anything that isn't American, self-aggrandizing boastfulness and the belief that every other culture is inferior to ours). Remember that Funny or Die video, If the Other Party Wins? The back half is starting to feel decidedly real.
