And they have a script..."who wants to team up to lose 20 lbs" etc. Unfriend etc

She moved on from that... now its some body building/sculpting thing. She is much younger than her husband by nearly 20 years. Three kids, stay at home mom. She is a great mother as he children have a nutritional issue and she hangs in there, but I notice she seems to have a lot of time on her hands. While the rest of us her husband's age are dealing with elderly parents, illnesses both our own and family members (my own father is dying), she is posting bikini pictures of herself. Its kind of like, enough already.

Family Chantel are AA, and very, very light skinned. Color prejudice in the AA community is real. (my husband, who is AA, went to a HBCU and his mother and aunts were all in AA sororities. Apparently one of the "Divine Nine" sororities used a paper bag test--if your skin was darker than a brown paper bag, you did not get in. I damn near dropped my teeth when I heard this!)

    If you’re black, get back.

    If you’re brown, stick around

    If you’re light, you’re alright

Pedro's mother is a racist shitbag, her "pure Dominican" crap is shameful and that attitude is pervasive in the DR and is causing unbelievable anguish there. I have a young friend who is Dominican, she told me her mother told her she should straighten her hair so people won't think she's Haitian. That shit is real and its horrible.

But Family Chantel are bigoted too. They clearly consider themselves superior to their dark skinned, Spanish speaking son in law. They are all awful.

Many years ago, when my mom was visiting Santo Domingo, she was talking to a black Dominican who was very dark. She told the woman that she was from the northern part of the island. The woman said, the blacks are so much lighter up there. My mom isn't black but it struck me that this woman, who is dark seemed prejudice against herself. Its kind of hard to explain how people view themselves and others in other countries.

I have always assumed that the reason many Catholic weddings are in the morning or early afternoon but the reception is hours later was to accommodate this.  The couple could have an hour or two to get to know each other in the biblical sense, and then join the reception.  I have attended more than one wedding at 11am with the reception at 5pm.  Pictures do not take that long even with a large wedding party.

My first wedding (Catholic) was at 11 with the reception at 5. We barely made the reception and my mom was NOT happy. We took pictures and then a bunch of us stopped at one of my old haunts and did shots.

While I don't think any of the Duggar marriages were arranged, I think the problem with the quick meet-to-marriage, is these kids don't even know themselves, never mind another person in six short months.

They've never been exposed to anything that might give them a clue to their own identity. Josiah, like his siblings have been raised to be 'a certain Christian'. Even when the parents say a kid has an interest, the interests usually remain superficial and all are within, across the board, Fundy approval-land.

Fundy woman: midwifery, photography, teaching, sewing, music, etc.

Fundy men: landscaping, cars, mechanics, real estate, flying, etc.

All Fundies: a heart for the Lord, God fearing, serving others, chaste, simple, self-sacrificing, modest, etc.

Like I said, I don't think the problem is that Josiah doesn't know Lauren, the problem is Josiah doesn't know himself.

I think you put it the right way. Quick marriages can be successful, but when they marry so young, I don't think they know enough about themselves. No JD and Abby I have a feeling having a more advanced age and having been out in the real world doing something (at least Abby), I think they know more about themselves and have a better chance at being happy.

I think the caramel custard is the same thing as what we call flan here in the southwest US. Quite a common menu item in the restaurants around here. Never made one myself but am tempted to try now.

My mom used to make a killer flan!

Thanks for pointing this out.  But isn't it true that the overall cost of living is much lower in the DR?  According to https://teleport.org/cities/santo-domingo/salaries/ the average annual salary for an attorney in Santo Domingo is a little over $8500, about a tenth of what a lawyer would make in a comparable city in the US.  Three hundred dollars a month would bring that up to over $12,000, which I think would make a big difference.  It's my understanding--and I confess I am pretty ignorant--in poorer countries like the DR, it is common for a few families to control the big money-making companies and be quite wealthy, while the average citizen is much poorer than his/her US counterpart.  I don't doubt that there are extremely wealthy people in poor countries, but in the DR the average common laborer (like a warehouse worker) earns only $86-172/month.  https://www.vagabondjourney.com/average-wage-in-dominican-republic/

Things are really expensive out there but if you have American dollars you can do quite well. The common laborer however, doesn't.

I should have put quotation marks around "rich."    My point is that "rich" in the Dominican Republic is nothing near "rich" in the US.

There are some very wealthy people in the DR. My cousin's husband's family own many farms/factories that produce many products such as Presidente beer.. They sent their son to med school, their daughter studied in Spain. My other cousin and his wife sent their daughter to study in Boston, she had a "cute" apartment that was nicer than my house.

FWIW, just having nice clothes or a good cut doesn’t mean they don’t need the help. It could be that they recently fell on hard times, or they keep a few high end items because it makes them feel good.

Years ago I read a memoir by someone who went from very successful to unemployed due to the dotcom bust, and while she talked humorously about going to the unemployment office in pearls and nice clothes, it’s a fair point that you don’t know what someone’s life was before they needed help.

I completely understand that can be the case.

Jinger used to have troublesome skin, however her recent pics with little makeup on look great, like this one with Abbie & JD.

All of them caked on the foundation so thickly a few years back, pre-marriage I think, it was hard to tell what was really happening on their faces.  Plus the extra-dark fake tans didn't help.  I think they've all backed off both coatings and did themselves a favor.

I have a feeling she is eating a much better diet than she used to in addition to prenatal vitamins (I hope). Jeremy doesn't strike me as the type who would tolerate tot casserole for dinner or some of those questionable recipes Jill comes up with.

It's kind of sad to read those comments above, in addition to the JillR family. I work with folks who live in the inner city. Many of them have food insecurity, and many of them are too proud to utilize food banks and such.

I work with someone who, while only part time, living on his own and going to school,  had to go to food banks. When my mom was still at home (she has dementia) she would buy multiple times, cereal or peanut butter for my son who was away at school. I would bring the food in and give it to my co-worker. I knew it was going to someone who needed it. He has since been made full time. Even back in the day, if he had a few dollars and bought a cheap pizza, he would always be willing to share.

How was your opinion of her before she started attending church?  Did your opinion of her change after that food bank comment?

I think mine would. The library I work with partners with the local food bank/school district during the summer to provide free lunch for kids that normally get the free lunch through the school. Now I know looks can be deceiving but there are mothers who come in here with their kids who clearly are not hurting financially. Prada handbags, new and nice cars, tanned, hair highlighted and nicely cut, good clothes...... I don't expect someone to come in wearing a burlap sack but it angers me to see people taking advantage of a freebie. All I can think is that even if a small precentage of those coming in need that free meal then I guess it is worth it.

I wonder what the girls think and feel when they are around other girls who dress normally? Nurie et al can't think that their styling is cute next to Jana or Kendra, right?

I shudder to think what Jesse says about them behind their backs.

Kendra and Jana come off looking REALLY good in those pictures. Healthy and beautiful and most importantly, skirts and all, normal.

It was oddly satisfying seeing that little cheeseburger demolished, lol.  I don't know what they thought they were going to be able to do with it anyway.  Besides, I don't know why they didn't design it to look like a bag of fries.

Agreed, I like Huge also.  It's a breath of fresh air with its unique design.

    That is a great idea!

Bwahahahaha! You win the thread today with the prom dress observation. Its true--does our girl Chantel ever wear jeans and a sweatshirt?

Has anyone explained to Mama Chantel that the person you intend to throw down with should be somewhere in the vicinity?

River. River. River. I can't with this kid. The self awareness of this entire family could be placed in a thimble with room to spare for David's AND Jorge's charm and charisma.

I am living for this right now. I'm dying to hear Nicole's mewing about her white princess dress.

Ugh! River is..... I can't even put it in words. The whole family is so uptight. Now, I'm not defending Pedro, something just ain't right there (and no I don't ascribe to what the family Chantel was inferring to)..... And what is with the Chantel sister?

As of last night, for the first time on this show, I just FF'd through all the Pao sections. She isn't detestable, per se, she is just sooooo boring and not an iota as hot as she thinks she is.

Truth is, I think I'm kinda over all the couples ... I know I'm in trouble when pretty much the only "character" I actually LIKE is poor Annie Poor. And given that Sister David Poor looks like David Poor in drag, Annie REALLY might want to think twice about buying into that gene pool. Also, was it just me or did Sister David Poor look like she was trying desperately not to burst out laughing through that whole dinner?

    Not just you.

Azan's family does seem lovely.  I actually dread them seeing Nicole's dress.  They will be horrified.  The only good part will be Nicole having to see their reaction about it.

I was thinking how nice and welcoming they were and what a slap it the face Nicole's dress is going to feel like. And was it me or was Azan trying to smile more?

4-1 on my predictions this week.  Witch Doctor dominated its fight against Blacksmith, but then got stuck on the screws!  If it hadn't gotten itself off of them at the last second to avoid a knockout, I would have had another loss.

Where I messed up was picking Reality to defeat Duck.  I just couldn't take Duck seriously, since it doesn't seem to have any real weapon to speak of.  A beak with a weak wedge.  But Reality burned itself out against it.

I was glad to see the guy from the "Battle Royale w/Cheese" crew admit that there were design flaws in the robot in order to make it look like a burger.  I'd say it's time to drop the burger theme, then.

The Bronco vs. Lockjaw finale was kind of anticlimactic, with both teams having technical issues (Bronco won).  The announcer mentioned possible frequency issues, I wondered if their radios were interfering with each other?

I didn't think Duck would do it, but it hung in there.

Yes, Battle Royale got torn apart. The design is cutesy but flawed. And that little burger went flying. Wow.

I can remember people saying "I don't know any gay people" and of course they did, they just didn't know it.  Because the gay people were in the closet.  Its different with transgender I think ( and I am very supportive because through my gay son I've learned a lot and met some wonderful people of all varieties so to speak) because some transitions are less noticeable than others.

I remember the All in the Family episode where Archie was convinced Mike's flamboyant friend was gay. The man who was gay turned out to be Archie's football player (and very masculine) friend.

No way would they have paid to shop at the whole sale clubs when you can shop at Aldi for free. I don't know about Costco, I've never been in one, but you have to have a paid membership for Sam's Club and BJs. Sure the one giant sized can of corn is probably cheaper, but hey, let's just open 18 of the regular sized ones from Aldi.

I will say, some of Aldi's ice cream really isn't too bad. Their plain French vanilla is pretty much like anyone else's. Some of their other flavors are decent enough, especially if you are feeding a crowd. My guess is Jill finds the carboard cartons a bit exotic since it's not the giant gallons plastic bucket of super cheap crap you can also get at Aldi.

When my son was little, almost every birthday party he went to had that giant bucket of ice cream.
