  1. Random musing:  I wonder what would have happened if the rest of the veterans had gotten together behind Jenna and asked K and J if she could have her point position back?  Perhaps K and J would think that it is impressive for the ladies to all "stand up" for their friend, but the other side of the coin is that K and J could have thought that this was their decision and the rest of the squad should mind their own business.  It would be interesting to see how something like that would turn out.

Welcome to the bizarre, cleo! Here's a link to the Wayback Machine archive for the TWoP Bates Motel thread...enjoy! https://web.archive.org/web/20140329232317/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3217705-bates-motel-like-one-of-his-stuffed-birds/

Dittydotdot, THANK YOU!!!!!!!  Even though you posted this thread over two years ago, I'm a recent newbie viewer of Bates Motel and was mourning the fact that TWOP was gone with the wind.  I came to this thread hoping to find someone, anyone to interact with and it led me to your link.  I hope you still post on PTv because THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!

I don't think her actions were criminal but they struck me as incredibly unrealistic. He thought he owed it to his daughter to have a glass of champagne to celebrate because she was the first in their family to graduate from higher education? And her handing it to him? The daughter of an alcoholic, one whose liver is so damaged he's waiting for a transplant, is not going to hand her dad a glass of champagne. I don't care if she was just elected President of the World, there's just no way she wouldn't have all kinds of baggage about his drinking, and that aside, the guy is going to die if he doesn't get a liver, so you give him a drink?

So, I finally watched this episode.  I tell you, when daughter-new-lawyer-woman-who-ultimately-kills-her-dad was telling Dr. Mole that if her father died then HE (Dr. Mole) was responsible, I wanted to reach through the television screen and slap the taste out of her mouth.  Stupid b**tch.  Then later, when Dr. Mole tells her it's not her fault even though she handed her father the champagne, I wanted to reach through again and yell at him, "You Lie!!!".  Sheesh.

The surgeons would not scrub out and go on their merry way while the patient was still under anesthesia.

I know, right?!?!?!  I just pictured this poor unconscious woman with her abdominal cavity open while the surgeons all left to grab lunch or something.  Hopefully, the anesthesiologist stuck around to keep her company.

I'm torn because I love Shaun but the rest of the cast runs the gamut from "I don't care about you" to "I hate you; get off my screen".

Finally Melendez didn't want to make me kick him in the taint.

In the future, a bit of a warning when you type something that makes me laugh and snarf iced tea out of my nose would be nice!

About Freddie:  I'd never seen him in anything else other than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but I loved him as Dr. Murphy right away.  Someone who reviewed the show called him "a talking kitten" and I thought that captured his adorableness very well!  I was curious to see him in Bates Hotel so I checked out an episode and I have to say that this guy can act!  As Norman, it wasn't about what he was saying; he just looked like, well, a psycho.  That he could play that and then play angelic Shaun equally well is very impressive.

The Pittsburgh Steelers has won the most with 6 Super Bowl Wins. Dallas, San Fran and the Patriots have each one 5, so it depends when you grew up as a child of the 70's I was going to be a DCC and my cousin was going to be the their QB!!!

The fact that I spent 8 years of my life living in Pittsburgh and I did not know that shows how not into pro football I am.  I'm much more interested in the cheerleaders!

Coffeemug, I wonder if you would have been allowed to hang out with your cousin or if that would have been under the no fraternization rule???

I have a friend who went to Vanderbilt, always intending to apply for medical school, great grades, and after evaluating her application realized she'd probably only get in to a lower tier school. So she bailed on the dream and went to Johns Hopkins for nursing school.

Hopkins is a fabulous school; I'm sure your friend got a phenomenal nursing education there and is surely doing very well in life!  But I have to say that it made me a little sad that she bailed on medical school because she wasn't happy with the schools she'd probably get in to.

I know that it's important to go to a "top tier" b-school or law school but where a doctor has his/her MD from doesn't seem to be as important.  My husband went to the University of Pittsburgh for medical school, which is a good, solid school.  He did his residency with a doctor who got her MD at Yale, which is, well, it's YALE and a DO who got his degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.  So that was three doctors from three very different schools who all got the same residency.

Granted, I could be totally off base, but that's just what I've noticed :)

I can't figure out how you get "Bess" out of "Elizabeth" but o well...

Queen Elizabeth I of England was known as "Good Queen Bess".  Maybe DCC Bess' parents were history buffs!

but Chuck's glass of champagne disqualified him from that liver.  Of course, livers are in limited supply, and reconstructive surgeries aren't.

I haven't watched the episode yet (but spoilers don't bother me; I actually like to know what happens), but it looks like a patient was denied a liver transplant because he drank one glass of champagne?  That exact same situation occurred on either "ER" or "Chicago Hope" several years ago; a man had a glass of champagne at his daughter's wedding.  I wonder if that's a common thing in real life.

I still can't really remember anyone's character name besides Shaun.

Thank you!!!  I thought it was just me.  If you asked me to recite the cast right now, I'd say there's Dr. Murphy, Dr. Old Dude Who Knew Shaun as a Kid, Dr. Pretty African American Doctor Who is Actually British, Very Tall Doctor with Indeterminate Accent, Rude Attending Doctor with the Mole, Doctor Who Wants Old Doctor's Job, and Generic Blonde Lady.

  10. I finally got to sit down and watch the second episode of "The Good Doctor".  Did anyone else notice that the young female's white coat had "FACS" after her name?  I thought she was a resident?  But FACS means she passed her boards so that wouldn't make sense.  I think I'll just continue to enjoy this show as mindless fun and try not to pick it apart or it'll drive me nuts!

Can I also add that I've been in a multitude of different OR suites and not a single one has had an observation deck? Usually, they just have small windows. I was a little upset when I found that out.

Wait just a minute.  Do you mean to tell me that the Seinfeld episode where Kramer accidently dropped a Junior Mint into a patient's open abdominal cavity couldn't really happen?  :(  I'm kind of disappointed.

Yes, he is a surgical resident, and you're right - in the Real World none of what was presented as to how he ended up at that hospital would have ever happened.

The show is playing fast and loose with a LOT of things.

Check out the following for more:

Yeah, considering what was going on in the residents' on-call room at the beginning of the show, I'm starting to question exactly WHY my husband never got home when he should have as a resident!  (just kidding...kinda)

  13. Freddie Highmore is adorable and I think I would continue to watch the show just for him.  That said, I'm not understanding how Shaun came to work at this hospital.  I thought I heard it mentioned that he is a surgical resident?  But you don't just go out and hire residents.  Fourth year medical students participate in a matching program that dictates what kind of residency they get and where they will be working.  So if he is a resident, I don't understand why there was all that brouhaha surrounding the vote whether he would be hired or not.  That would have been decided long before he showed up at the hospital.  And there tend to be at least a couple of surgical residents starting at one time.  Where are the others??

If he is, in fact, an attending surgeon (what someone is after finishing their residency; they are considered fully trained and are allowed to work on their own), then Other Attending Dude was waaaaaaaay out of line with that comment on how Shaun would never be doing anything more than holding a suction tube during procedures.

I didn't find the touching of the Star thing creepy. The players touch that exact Star every time they run from the locker room to the practice field. It's just a thing that they do.

    That Star is iconic ✭

I wondered if they all touched the Star because it was The Place Cassie Was Proposed To.  But then I remembered that was at the old stadium :)

That's exactly what Kitty would say. ? We need to have a Kitty Uncensored episode. Badly!!

I know Kitty seems to LOVE Holly.  I wonder how she feels about all this?

I kind of wonder if Holly envies the over 21 DCC and their club outings so much that she finds a way to get in to join them, hence Jenna saying that she has had conversations with Holly "multiple times".

Gosh, that was such a common scenario in college that nobody gave any of their friends' actual ages a second thought.  But, then, I'm sure the contract the DCCs sign when they make the team is ironclad with no wiggle room.  I don't recall anyone ever being thrown out of my college sorority for underage drinking.  Posing in Playboy, though, was a completely different matter.

Did anyone else think that maybe RayLynn borrowed those boots from Vivian's tin man costume?

  16. I'm on my lunch break watching last night's show and I'm at the part where J&K brought Holly into the office and asked her which part of the "not fraternizing with players" entry in the contract she didn't understand.  I'm so embarrassed for Holly that I can only watch 30 seconds or so before I have to pause it and do something else for a minute.  Is that weird?  I should just jump in and watch the whole, sorry thing...like ripping off a bandaid!

I always thought that Kelli and Judy's attitude about what a privilege it is to be a DCC and how you have to earn your boots was leftover sorority attitude (I still remember hearing that whole "you have to earn your letters" crap in college), but seeing that tour of The Star made me realize that the entire organization is like that. Seriously, it was so creepy the way they want to indoctrinate every single person even tangentially associated with the team to believe that they have received the highest honor in all the land. Blue kool-aid indeed!

I've been really interested in Scientology lately (I'm hooked on Leah Remini's show) and have done a lot of reading about the organization and I couldn't help but notice last night how much the  Cowboys organization and Scientology have in common!  I know that sounds weird but that segment last night made it seem cult like.
