  1. Ok, it looks like I'm the only person on this board who likes Paola!  I think she's gorgeous, even with the horrible red hair.  Really, she reminds me of Jessica Rabbit...but in a good way. :)  She's not bad; she's just drawn that way, people!  Juan, though...just wow.  If anyone spoke to my husband that way, no matter how long I'd been friends with them, they'd get the permanent direct cut.

Poor Annie must have had a horrible, horrible life in Thailand if staying here with that buffoon is preferable to going home.  I feel really bad for her.

Chantel's boobs should have their own IMDB page.  Her family; they're like a group of cartoon villains or something.

When I first started watching, I thought Anfisa was manipulating Jorge but now it seems to be the other way around.

No. That’s Brody Jenner. Speaking of Laguna Beach and The Hills, those message boards on TWOP used to be hella snarky. Luckily, I don’t remember the constant whining that ppl weren’t only saying nice things about Kristen, Lauren, Spencer, and Heidi.

Sorry to veer off topic, but how in the world could people be expected to say nice things about Spencer???  If I recall, there WERE no nice things about Spencer.

I hope she doesn't give them the luxury of her trying out again.  They had their chance.  I have a feeling she is going to be blessed with the favor of something so much grander than being a cheerleader!!!!!  It may have worked out in her favor that they cut her.

I absolutely agree with you!  I mean, really, how many DCC have used their time of the squad as a stepping stone to fame and riches?  For every Kelli and Judy there are probably a couple Kaitlin LeGrandes and Chelsea Cheneys (spelling?).  I should say, though, that that really, really gorgeous DCC who snagged a Cowboy did pretty well for herself :)

Great answer! I’d add... “and when I take the personal responsibility to make sure that I’m walking the walk, I will honor the uniform as much as it honors me.”

    Oooh!  I like that!

Agreed. And don’t get me started on the “does the uniform make the girl or the girl make the uniform” question. I thought that was a trick question.

Well, Kelli, I think that the answer to that question is both.  The uniform is beautiful and iconic and the woman chosen to wear it will find herself on the world’s biggest stage with millions of eyes on her. She will look put on that uniform and look at herself in the mirror and it will hit her that she is one of very few who have had the honor of wearing it.  She will realize that she has a responsibility to the organization, the fans and her cheerleader sisters to show that uniform to its best advantage at all times.  By being fit, well groomed, professional and a good role model.  You put together the most recognizable uniform in the world and an exemplary woman showing it off to its best advantage and the sky is the limit.

(I spit that out in about a minute and a half but I think something along those lines would be a good, neutral answer :)  )

Nikki knew about J and Mia. There is no way she can physically do anything except close her legs and leave so with Mia getting her drunk and pushing her on Nikki got revenge sex on J.

I'm not so sure that Nikki knows about J and Mia, although I think she at least suspects something.  I don't know if I'd consider the Marine to be revenge sex, though.  I think she was lonely (thinking of the first scene when she and J were doing the deed and the look on her face was like, "are we having fun yet"?) because J has been distracted lately and cute Marine + too many drinks = parking lot sex.

I think she told J because she felt guilty; not to get at him.  And I think J reacted the way he did in the truck for one of two reasons.  Either he realized that she slept with someone else because he hadn't really been paying attention to her and he felt guilty or he was pissed off because someone else played with his toy, dammit.

Of course, later in that episode she gets a little too much of that when she opens their bedroom door, so that's another great little metaphor.

That scene the next morning when Paige saw a breakfast sausage and winced was hilarious!

It's funny, actually, I just recently was reading an article where someone was talking about how sometimes there are certain phrases in a language that say something about the people. The person writing it was Hungarian and was talking about learning English and how this kind of cultural understanding made her English much better. One of the phrases she listed was "make a difference." She said that was such a stock phrase in English--probably especially American English--because it's such an American concept and it didn't really exist in a lot of other language. Paige and her parents kind of exemplify it. Paige, as an American, believes that she can Make A Difference as an individual (and as part of something bigger than herself). Philip and Elizabeth see themselves are just "proud to do whatever they can" along with everyone else in the country.

Do you by any chance have a link to that article?  That sounds really interesting and I'd love to know more about it.  Thanks!

  9. What is your opinion on the Paige/Claudia relationship?  Claudia seemed to be very fond of Paige, but do you think that was an act to try to bring her into the fold?  I *THINK* I remember Claudia saying something rather snotty to Elizabeth regarding her "American children", but I can't remember for sure.

Nicky is going to get herself killed. J’s infatuation with Cartel Girl is like a neon sign pointing out that if J dumps Nicky, she knows enough to put the whole family in prison.

I would not piss off Cartel Girl if I were Nicky!

I could walk to that In N Out if I HAD to, but I prefer the fries from Wendy's (just down the street from In N Out too!).

The simple fact that Nikki began dating J, then dated his freakin' uncle and ended up going back to J gives me the heebie jeebies. I'm totally judging her and I admit it. I was kind of shocked that J even took her back.

First of all, I am dying to try an In N Out burger.  If I ever get to California, that will probably be my first stop!

Second, I think J just keeps her around for the same reason most other 18 year old boys would; because she sleeps with him.

    Southland is streaming on Hulu.

Thank you, mochamajesty!  I found the whole series on DVD on Amazon for $95 which was way too steep for my budget but I think I'll probably be able to manage a Hulu subscription.  I can't wait; thanks again!

Once again, J is being used by a woman. Mia, who now turns out to be a contract killer, has probably been dispatched to keep her eyes on J, to see if he knows where Baz's stash is hidden.  She is now going to sleep over, too? This does make me worry about the woman where J actually has his little stash.  I imagine he has taken most of the money,  it he did have a little jewelry and a throwaway gun there.  Mia would only have to make a harmless social call, though, and then to search the bathroom to find it...don't know that anyone would be harmed.

As soon as J went into his former neighbor's bathroom and came out with several stacks of cash I thought to myself that the neighbor may not last the season.

I think Mia is really pretty; although that doesn't have anything to do with anything.

I think this is due to Shawn Hatosy being such a good actor, and also that, now that Smurf is in jail, he is the only one of the family who actually cares about Lena and is trying to be a real guardian to her. The others would ship her off to foster care in a heartbeat.

He really is an excellent actor, isn't he?  I understand he was really good in the cop show "Southland" and I would love to see that series but I'm not aware of it streaming anywhere so I'll have to content myself with watching him play a hoodlum with a heart of gold (kinda).

  14. I like the premise of this show and it's visually stunning at times, but I wish they weren't trying to do quite so much.  I'm not really interested in Mara's back story and, for that matter, why didn't they make her a psychologist or psychiatrist instead of a former hostage negotiator?  That seems kind of random.

What I'd like to see is something like (I'm dating myself here) Fantasy Island where the whole gist of the episode is the person living out their fantasy and perhaps realizing that it's not all it's what they expected.

Poor Lena.   Foster care might honestly be the best option for her. I’m surprised that CPS isn’t involved at least based on the fact that both her bio parents are deceased, maternal grandparents deceased, and paternal grandmother incarcerated.

I struggle with my feelings on Pope.  He's done some hair raisingly terrible things including, yes, offing poor Catherine.  He has some serious conflicting feelings about Smurf.  His dead-eye stare is off the charts and it scares the isht out of me just to look at him.  But...there's something very pure and sweet (laugh if you will!) about his relationship with Lena.  (though it is still creepy that he killed her mom)

Agree on Ben, worst actor on the show. Honestly brings nothing to the table. Even Lena is a better character.

Well, he DOES bring the pretty :)

And I agree with someone else who posted that he brings comic relief (although I'm not sure if that is on purpose or not)

As for Nikki...I know I'm in the minority but I don't mind her.  I think she remembered that Smurf always had munchies set out at the family meetings so she was just trying to help.

When Renee asks where they're from Elizabeth happily says they're from Chicago and Pittsburgh and Philip also has a neighborhood where he says he grew up.

I missed that!  Do you remember the name of the neighborhood Philip said he grew up in?

On another note- I’m doing a re-watch and one of the things I’m looking at is Philip’s attitude towards Stan:  When he stopped just seeing him as an enemy to be watched/kept close. I don’t really think it was S1.

I would be very interested to read your opinion as to when Philip started seeing Stan as a friend.  I've tried to look back and remember but I don't know when "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" became "Hey buddy, wanna share a six pack???"!

Also:  Does anyone read lips???  I'd love to know what Philip and Elizabeth were saying on the train after Paige decided to not go with them.

  19. I haven't had time to read this whole thread (I want to take my time and savor it) so I apologize if someone else mentioned this, but did anyone else get a "Newhart" vibe when Elizabeth was dreaming of being in bed with Gregory?  I didn't catch that the first time I watched the scene but when I went back it hit me!

Well, you assumed wrong. The kids of the real life Russian spies continued to study in America, and they even got their Canadian citizenship back. By your logic, they should be arrested and their life ruined, that is simply not what happened in real life. In America, you are usually not guilty by association, OK?

What about Maryland v. Pringle? I have always felt that that case was a striking example of guilt by association.  I'm probably showing my age here and I can't remember exactly what Justice Rehnquist said in his opinion, but it was something along the lines of the arresting officer being able to reasonably conclude that the defendant was in possession of cocaine despite the fact that the drugs were not found on his person but in the back of the car he was riding in.  Guilt by association, right?   And Mr. Pringle hadn't even been living with the other men in the car for the past 19 years.  :)  Then there's the Felony Murder rule.  I'm sure you know that many have argued that this doctrine is guilt by association in its purest form (and I'm not inclined to disagree).  And of course don't forget good old United States v. Park.

Your assertion that in America citizens are usually not believed to be guilty by association is a noble one but, unfortunately, incorrect.  OK?

Finally, I'll pose the question that I know has been burning in all of our heads.  Who gets the wig collection??

  20. I wish you all could be here for the Americans Finale viewing party I've put together for tonight!  I have four friends coming over and we're having (thanks to a web search for easy to make Russian finger food) blini with smoked salmon, cucumber radish salad, Russian black bread and butter (sourced this out to my sister in law; I'm not much of a baker) , and mini lamb kabobs.  To drink?  Moscow Mules, of course!

    Hope everyone enjoys tonight's finale!
