Glinda Velvet (lawyer by day, performer by night) is enigmatic and fascinating.

I would totally watch a spin-off about Glinda Velvet/Josiah Patnett, lawyer by day, drag queen by night. You could have courtroom drama and backstage drama. Also, the weekly Sunday meal before the show that day has to be part of every episode. Each episode has a scene with the Sunday meal.

I bet if Ormewood would cough up the bucks, Nico could take the daughter to the hair salon.

Yes but I don't think Ormewood would want to spend the money because he thinks/he is convinced he can handle it and do it himself.

When Will met Uncle Antonio's friends, and one of them immediately called will a "dirty cop" -- what was that all about?  Was he just a cop hater?  I would've liked Uncle Antonio to have defended Will a bit, or at least give his friend some shit about jumping on his nephew like that, but Will just dealt with him head-on.

I agree. That was a huge red flag for me. The fact that Antonio did not immediately say something when someone insulted a relative did not sit well with me at all. I know it could have been pure shock, but it felt wrong and off.

Trixie, herself, never really had to economize due to the “clothing allowance” she used to receive from her aunt.

I am pretty sure Trixie grew up poor, and she knows what it's like to have to economize. I thought the clothing allowance from the aunt started when she was an adult, or at least no longer a child.

I hate what they are doing with Trixie. If Mr Trixie actor wants to leave the show then just don't write storylines with him. Have Trixie stay at Nonnatus house 3 nights a week and mention his name a couple times and focus on her as a competent midwife.

Turning him into an off-screen character could work really well. She could mention him and the things they've done together. There could also be phone calls where we only hear her side of the conversation.

I greatly admire and respect Lady Gaga but if she gets an Oscar nomination for this while Margot got nothing from the Oscars for Barbie, I’ll puke.

I'm still mad the director of Joker  was nominated for an Oscar and Greta Gerwig wasn't. After I saw Joker I thought, almost everything in here has been done before and been done better. It felt like a retread/reheated version of various 1970s movies and didn't add anything different. Greta Gerwig managed to create a fresh adaptation of a classic work that had been done multiple times before, but managed to make it feel different and new.

It may be believable that he is hiding things from Trixie, but it is frustrating that he doesn't just let her know that he doesn't have a bottomless pit of money.

Huge YES to both of these comments. She is not a child. She is a grown adult capable of understanding the issue and responding accordingly, if he'd only tell her what the issue was.

Matthew needs to grow a pair and tell Trixie about the money problems and quit shopping.

I completely agree with this. If he would only tell her, she would completely understand and start coming up with all sorts of ways/things to do in order to economize. She would not be talking about a new car, an expensive preschool, and what not if she knew the truth about his financial situation. It's drama for the sake of drama, which I am not a fan of.

I would love that. Margaret and Susan leave and start their own law firm bringing Todd and Lyle with them, because they have two completely different skill sets. I can picture Todd and Lyle arguing over offices.

Hey, which one is Sherlock and which one is Watson?

Maybe Susan can be their "inside man."

Todd and Lyle are not Sherlock and Watson. It's a totally different dynamic. It's by the book/booksmarts and way out of the box/streetsmarts.  It has a very 1980s light drama feel to it. I'm thinking Riptide. Lyle is the nerdy one while Todd is a composite of the two cooler guys. Moonlighting or Remington Steele without the will they or won't they romantic tension.

I'm all for Susan as the "inside man."

TPTB should seriously consider reworking the spinoff to include regular B plots that would be like a reboot of The Andy Griffith Show. Maybe lady cop and Connie become roommates raising Ceecee while Mandy's away at college.

I like parts of your idea for the spin-off but I want to rework it a little. A more modern version of The Andy Griffith Show set in Medford Texas sounds enjoyable. You would have to add in the quirky townsfolk/citizens. The other version would be Booklyn 9-9/Barney Miller set in a rural area. The question is are you focusing on the town or the police officers, because I think either one could work.

I don't like the idea of the lady cop and Connie becoming roommates. That just seems a bit much for me, but I do like the idea some type of (TVLand) probation/agreement that involves the lady cop checking up on Connie on a regular basis. This idea is pure TVLand logic, but instead of prison Connie gets an absolutely insane number of community service hours, and the lady cop is checking in/supervising her.

Because I have no life,  I looked it up.  On July 20, the high temp was 76 F and the low was 62F.  So, while they might've gotten a little chilly once night fell, the daytime temps were not incompatible with light summer clothing.

Thank you. The sleeveless dresses make much more sense now. They were wearing what they wore during the day and didn't change outfits before going to the viewing party. I find this a highly likely and totally plausible explanation for the sleeveless dresses.

  8. I forgot to post this earlier. I was surprised how many people were wearing sleeveless dresses to watch the launch from the TV set placed outside. I remember London in the summer at night being a bit too chilly for a sleeveless dress.

However, Matthew and Trixie have always been able to communicate with one another and not held big secrets back.  It doesn't make sense that he hasn't shared with her that their financial status is somewhat precarious and asked her to reign in her spending.  Trixie, having grown up really poor, doesn't seem to understand that even wealthier families have to cut corners in times of financial stress and she's not getting his hints about trying to economize.

If he was just honest and direct with her she wouldn't have a problem with it. She would start figuring out what she could do to help. She would completely understand why the sofa isn't possible. The problem is that his hints are not very clear.

On 4/3/2024 at 9:58 AM, Notabug said:

I would so much prefer to see Trixie in a storyline where Matthew shares his concerns about their finances and Trixie, using the smarts and dedication that she's shown in other areas; helps brainstorm a solution or two to get them back on stable ground.  Then, we can see the two of them carrying out the plan, working together to resolve the financial crisis.

For example, realizing that the expensive new sofa isn't in the budget; why not have Trixie with maybe a couple of other midwives and/or Fred decide to re-upholster their old sofa?  It's not much, but it's better than the shopping spree and driving lessons we've gotten so far.

I love this idea. It's vast improvement over what actually aired within the episode.

I liked that they made Janis a lesbian; I always felt like she should have been. It's more of a betrayal for Regina to actually out someone and mock/ostracize them for being gay than it is to start a rumor that a straight person is gay. The change made Regina and Janis's backstory a lot richer.

I wished they had kept Janis's sexual orientation a question. It always annoyed me in the original that at the end you find out Janis is attracted to guys. I wanted a storyline where the audience is wondering is or she isn't and ultimately coming to the conclusion that it doesn't matter whether or not she's a lesbian. Outing someone or spreading lies about someone's sexuality are both bad.

  11. I know the spin-off has already been announced and was probably a done deal before this episode was written. That being said, did this episode feel a bit like a back-door pilot to anyone else? It's the network essentially saying "here's a taste of the Georgie and Mandy show, be sure to tune in next season for more."

Loads of crafters on Etsy with amazing pet clothing.  With Betty's small size, they probably won't be getting any of the sweaters that are commercially available.  I'm betting the wardrobe folks are have a ball sourcing her wearables!!  It's a possible they have someone locally who knits for them.  Probably a week or so to do a custom knit or crochet piece.

I love the idea that in universe, Nico is buying on Etsy.

Seriously where is Will getting these sweaters for Betty? They're adorable.

Nico is 100% the one buying the sweaters. There is absolutely no question in my mind on this. Will however, is probably the one paying for them, whether it's giving Nico the money to pay for the sweaters or paying them back after they purchase the sweaters.

At the same time, I also liked that Georgie really didn't care about the baptisms one way or the other and was able to shrug it off.

It's very much who Georgie is. He does not care about religious dogma. He wants his child to grow up to be a good person with values, but does not seem to have strong feelings about whether to raise the child Baptist or Catholic. He saw the positive in the situation; both grandmothers cared about their granddaughter.

I saw Archie Bunker do it and its been a trope ever since.

I was waiting/wondering if someone was going to mention Archie Bunker. Nice to know that someone else remembers the classics.

Mandy and Georgie missed the obvious compromise. Have a secular officiant like a judge/justice of the peace, with friends and family there to see it and Mandy's father walking her down the aisle.

That said, I understand Mandy's decision to demonstrate that there will be consequences for unwanted interference.

    Overall, I enjoyed the episode.

She does do live theater in London . . . maybe that gives her greater joy.

If she's done with the show, then the writers have full permission to kill off while the character is away off-screen.

Tarantino flirted with one kind of movie but was really making something more symbolic here.  I kind of wanted him to develop the dramatic story of a has-been working his way through descending levels of Hollywood and having to come to terms with that, as his more chill side kick (with a dark past) crosses paths with and flirts with an element of the counter culture that turns out to be evil.  Because a drama really committed to that (against the lovely back drop of Tarantino's shots of 1960s Hollywood) would've been pretty engrossing.

And, yeah, I know, it's Tarantino.  Style and quirkiness (that doesn't often land for me but I understand why others love) interspersed with graphic violence is kinda his thing.  But don't tell me he couldn't have done something interesting and impactful about two macho men out of place in an industry and world that's changing too fast for them -- Jackie Brown is so good precisely because the two leads face and accept their own aging and hard luck in a hostile world, and it informs their actions through the film.

Tarantino's clearly pining for a mythical past world of his media-loving childhood, where macho men could be macho men (and as long as they're "cool" we don't ask too many questions about how their nagging wife died, or whether Quentin was looking for an excuse to have a scene where two women get their faces absolutely pulverized, because if you think about those things for too long ... yikes).  Margot Robbie as Tate is an enigma precisely because she's really just a symbol of this world (that never really existed) and yet Tarantino really longs for and wants to "save."

We get some really nice tension building with the Spahn Ranch scenes, and Rick putting his all into playing a character he initially felt was beneath him ... only to realize he's still going to have to resort to spaghetti westerns.  But that tension gets frittered away in the last act with misguided narration and the ultra-violent twist ending played for laughs that feels rushed after two hours of cruising along slowly and hinting at something deeper.  OR, if you're a fan of Tarantino's style, it perfectly fits his vision.  I'm not a Tarantino fan, and that's probably why his least Tarantino film (Jackie Brown) is my favorite and I found this film frustrating.

Here's my take on it. If you start a story with "Once Upon a Time," the implied contract is that at the end "they will live happily ever after." In saving Tate and and making friends with Jay Sebring, Rick and Cliff now have an in with Tate and Polanksi. The line earlier in the movie about being one pool party away from a comeback is now completely possible and highly likely.

I think Tarantino's nostalgia for a world that never existed is a huge part of this movie. It's why he chose the western and not a different genre, because that genre is very much about a past that never really existed the way it was depicted in movies or TV. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is calling back to the revisionist westerns about the closing of the west.

McKenna was great as usual. Phoebe’s subplot with Melody had a very strong LGBTQ vibe.

I was wondering if I was seeing something that wasn't really there. Great to know I'm not the only one who picked up on that, and I almost never pick up on stuff like that.

    The scene of

    Spoiler

Phoebe and Melody walking back reminded me of the scene of Jim and Plato outside Jim's house in Rebel Without a Cause. There was a moment when I wondered if Phoebe and Melody were actually going to kiss. I know you can make case for Phoebe and Melody as just friends, but based on some of the dialogue and the way it was filmed, I could also make a case for implied romance.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie. It was pure summer blockbuster fun. It was a love letter and a nostalgia fest for the original movie, and I don't see that as a problem. It was telling its own original story. I also enjoyed the way the different subplots came together at the end.

I agree that Cyril should not be left in limbo.  But his character, as we know him, would probably have some period of mourning that he has to go through before taking up with another woman.  And I cannot see him with the atheist midwife, that just wouldn't fly.

My vote would be to replace Lucille with another actress.  It might take us time to adjust but overall would be a better way to go in my opinion.

They've written the character off the show, so I think killing her off-screen, followed by a suitable period of mourning, and then introduce a love interest next season makes the most sense.

Also, (and this may be just me) she's the only midwife character I actively disliked and was glad to see her written off the show. I am not okay with a health professional letting her religion get in the way/interfere with the providing the best care or most accurate information to her patients.

  19. Someone asked for a place to discuss all of the episodes that have aired and the series as a whole, so here it is. This is for posts that deal directly with the series, but cover multiple episodes. Speculation without spoilers is also welcome. In addition, posts that deal with Andor within the larger Star Wars universe could work here as well, although there is a general discussion for all things Star Wars. Basically, as long the post is relevant to the series Andor, this is the place.

  20. 19 hours ago, Shanna Marie said:

Depending on when they met, I could see Andor considering Han to be a frivolous lightweight, since Han goes for a glib act and tries to act like he doesn't care. Even at his worst, I don't think Andor ever tried to act like he didn't care about people. Han would tell Andor to lighten up. Andor is more of a planner while Han makes it up as he goes, so that would be a clash. But they're both highly competent and would come to respect each other for that.

I think how they react to each other is completely and totally dependent on timeline. If it's set closer to Solo, I can picture a "are they after me or after you" scenario and reluctantly trusting each other/becoming friends out of necessity. Both are often on the wrong side of the law, and neither one is involved in the rebellion yet. I'm picturing something like "we're both in trouble, the only way out is to work together, even if we don't get along or like each other," and over the course of the adventure they grow to respect each other if not becoming friends.

If they met closer to Andor, then I think what you described is more accurate and what would have happened.

Here's my thought: Release the full uncut episodes on DVD, then that would give people a real reason/a greater incentive to pledge to PBS and be able to watch the full uncut episodes. That being said, I do think it's really stupid that PBS cuts scenes.

The revolving door of midwives and nuns actually helps keep it fresh, as does the Love Boat style of storytelling, with three plots per episode wrapped up each week.

I agree. The nature of the story lends itself to new characters coming in, and I appreciate that the new characters are not usually carbon copies of the character they replaced but unique individuals who bring something different.

Also, "Love Boat style of storytelling" is one of the best and most descriptive phrases I have ever read on the internet.

  25. I enjoyed the finale. I was surprised who killed Ellis's brother was not a larger part of this season. I thought it was going to be something in the background. I am curious where this goes for season 2, if we are lucky enough to get it. I'm guessing Max and Ellis will be investigating the death of his brother, while Max unofficially helps/consults on his regular police cases.
