I wonder if TCM could become profitable as a streaming network. I don't mean the abysmal WatchTCM, which is tied to a cable subscription and maddeningly requires a new sign-in every week. I mean a real streamer that people had to pay for, and where most of the money went to TCM instead of the cable company. Don't even talk to me about the TCM "hub" on MAX. I mean a dedicated TCM network, run by TCM people. I'd pay for that.

Disocvery+ is a stand-alone service, so clearly they have no problem running different/multiple streaming services. I know there was a classic streaming service which didn't work, but maybe with the name and library of TCM your idea could succeed. I know people who would pay for it.

This quote from the article makes me think the situation is not as bad or dire as it could be.

    Quote

U.S. Networks Group chairman and chief content officer Kathleen Finch said in a memo to staff Tuesday that Michael Ouweleen, the president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, Discovery Family and Boomerang, will take oversight of TCM. Ouweleen previously ran TCM.

The person in charge has experience with TCM and may understand it's mission/purpose better than someone with no previous involvement.

  3. I saw Elemental as well. I enjoyed it. It was a classic love story about immigrants and the next generation. The visuals were impressive.

I have a strong belief that if you introduce a ticking clock, that is an implied contract with the audience that the deadline imposed by the ticking will be the climax of the movie, so I am still not sure how I feel about them subverting expectations with that.

Overall, I would reccomend the movie.

Going back a bit (I’m still catching up), the peas and carrots thing was a reference to stories about old Hollywood. It is said that extras in crowd scenes in early sound films were told to say “peas and carrots” to sound like a grumbling mob.  Not sure if it’s true, but it’s a good story.

I have heard similiar versions of that story, I just didn't think it worked here, because unlike the old movies where the extras wouldn't be clearly heard and all they needed for the movie was the sound of a crowd, Pat would be able to hear what the people around her were saying.

  5. I thought the episode on social media was one of the best of this mini-series. It had a clear arc and I thought it did an excellent job charting how social media changed and evolved over the decade.

My only super minor complaint/quibble is that I wish they spent a minute or two explaining that the massive increase in smart phones occured at this time, because that was the decade that smartphone ownership really accelerated.

I like the live action versions of the movies with human characters, but why remake the animal ones? When I want to see animals behaving like animals, I watch a documentary, when I want to see them having fun adventures, I am not looking for a realistic look.

YES! I saw a side by side comparison of a scene from the hand animated Lion King with the CGI Lion King and the animals had so much more life and expression in the original animated movie.

I think the live action have been hit or miss. There's really only one of the human ones that I absolutely loved and thought was brilliant (Aladdin) the others have been only okay. There were many I skipped because I wasn't interested in them.

Some interesting insight from the actor playing Curtis about the conflict he had with Carey this season. It seems their friendship is over.

I hope we still get to see Curtis every now and then. I would love to see the two of them (Cary and Curtis) on some kind of industry panel type thing. Also, I want to know if Girlies is actually popular. As other people have said it could be a series critics despise but run for multiple seasons because it has a large number of fans who love the series.

I know, they should just keep it on Hulu! It’s so cute and inexpensive to film.

It's a period peice. There is no way on earth the series is inexpensive to film.

As for the possibility of a season 3, depending on when the strike ends, there may not be time to write pilots and since the process of creating a new series is incredibly expensive, ABC may just decide to stick with The Wonder Years for another season because it's less expensive than cancelling it and creating something new. Also, a series can be sold into syndication after 4 seasons, so it if it gets a season 3, there's a better than average chance it will get a 4th season, because there is money to be made in syndication licensing.

I did too.  But Dean and his dad likely arrived around the time it happened, so he could have known about it.  I actually thought Lonny was hitting on Bill for a moment or two.  Or maybe he was.  Lol.

Maybe, they could have known about Stonewall but doubtful. My understanding was that it in most of the publications Dean or more likely Bill would have been reading, coverage of Stonewall would have been a short paragraph deep into the paper, not major front page above the fold multi-day coverage coverage.

I figured she would be accidentally texting her "friend" that she was staying with, instead of Streeter.  But I guess in the end she was Tweeting all of it?

That's what I thought too, but it's the same basic result. Someone she didn't want to know could easily find out about all the awful things she said.

I was wondering how it was possible for her to have a regular normal vacation/visit home without fans constantly coming up to her.

And I think the point was that high school is especially hard for queer kids, so they are less likely to want to relive the experience via a reunion.

Thank you for that much needed and helpful clarification. I have seen multiple shows with heterosexual/straight people stressing out about thier reunions so I did not understand the connection between queer kids wanting to show off at the reunion and why that would be different from anyone wanting to show off thier sucess at their reunion. You explained it perfectly.

Another thing I'm not crazy about is that Cary and Brooke are both becoming more and more awful. The nice thing about this show has always been that while they tend to make bad choices and have bad luck they weren't necessarily awful people. That's becoming less and less the case.

    3 hours ago, jsm1125 said:

Also, Brooke and Cary barely seem to interact these days, let alone give each other advice or keep each other in check.

YES to both of these comments. Usually, Brooke and Cary could provide each other a much needed reality check and tell the other what they needed to hear, not necessarily what they wanted to hear. I think the lack of a reality check is harming both of them.

In the past, you got the sense that when something was going wrong or something wonderful happened, the first person they would tell is the other. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

On a similar note, in the past Cary and Brooke, especially Brooke would say no or stop anything that they thought was not right for Chase.

I couldn't figure out where this whole marathon was supposed to be airing until I realized it was Pat's channel.

I missed that so thanks for pointing it out. I had the same question but it was TV and this season has been a little out there so I was just willing to roll with it. Thanks for providing an actual real explanation.

Also, why are singing lessons, voice lessons, vocal coaching, whatever you want to call it not an option for Chase?

It's sad that in this episode we learned that Cary will never be satisfied/happy. He got almost everything he wanted, but he still wants more. Even if he wins an Oscar, it will not be enough. He will probably want an EGOT.

  12. I got the sense that Bill was writing more for the Marvin Gaye who had done the classic love duets, but his style had changed and Bill needed to write for the singer's new style.

I like Bill setting aside his issues with his neighber because 1) a gig's a gig and more importantly 2) the neighbor had been helpful to Bill and Dean when he didn't have to be.

I kind of wished Dean had mentioned that the Stonewall riots had happened, but that he wasn't aware of it at the time and didn't realize how important it was until decades later.

Also I think I've figured out the timeline for season 1. It starts in Spring of 1968, then it skips the summer and Fall of 1968/a semester at school, then we pick up second semester/Spring of 1969. Season 2 picks up a month or two from where season 1 ends.

  13. Adding to my idea for Hocus Pocus 3, after high school Max and Allison drifted apart. (I'm not sure when). Needing to deal with/defeat supernatural forces somehow brings them together again and they realize they were meant for each other/supposed to be together. Danni may or may not be shipper on deck.

  14. I wish the episode on protests and social movements had spent a bit more time on the subject of White Nationalism and been clearer about the explicit links between Donald Trump and White Nationalism.

Each episode is trying to cover too much, and is part of one of my biggest problem is with this series and why overall I think it's the weakest one so far. For The Movies they were able to show how movies or the industry changed over the course of the decade that was the topic of the episode. In all of the previous decade series, within each episode they did a fantastic job of explaining the state of Topic X at the start of the decade and what it was at the end of the decade.  They were able to show how something changed over the course of a decade. For event based episodes like the Kennedy Assasination or Watergate, they did an equally fantastic job of explaining what the event was, why it mattered, and how it changed things. This miniseries isn't really doing that, which is part of the reason it suffers by comparison.

It is interesting that Midge did not venture into comic films or even a TV show a la Ray Romano, Brett Butler and Bob Newhart. It seems that her income was from touring all the time, which is a harsh life for a performer.

My guess is she's one of those people who needs the applause and laughter of a live audience, and a studio audience during a taping isn't going to do it for her. She needs to know the laughter is real, genuine, and earned.

I'm still waiting for another twist when Curtis's bad show becomes a hit anyways but Cary's "good" show dies.  Or maybe his curse will be stuck in a role for years where he doesn't speak and no one knows who he is.

I kind of love this idea. Curtis's show (Girlies) becomes a fan favorite that critics despise, while Cary's show (Windweaver) is a critic's darling that may get some internet buzz, but almost no one watches it or knows someone who watches it.

I disagree you about no one knowing who Cary is in Windweaver (unless you meant that no one knows who he is because almost no one is watching the show). Unlike a lot of sci-fi/fantasy roles, he isn't wearing a ton of prothestics. He is still pretty recognizable out of his Windweaver costume/make-up.

I thought he'd have a reduced role this season because of Ghosts but it feels like he's had even more of a presence this year.

I have no idea when things film, but it is possible that the HBO filming schedule doesn't overlap with the network filming schedule? Maybe before or after he films a season of Ghosts, he has the time to work on The Other Two. There are plenty of actors on network shows who do movies or other projects between seasons, so maybe this is similar to that.

  17. Adding onto my prediction about Buddy. I want him to work as a dishwasher in the Frosty Palace because I like the visual. He is no longer part of the action, but completely removed from it. He can only see what's happening through the windows, or get a quick glimpse when someone opens the door to drop off things for him to clean.

Also, I've figured out the the TV Land logic that will allow Buddy to rent an apartment. He can afford the apartment, but if he needs someone over a certain age to sign the lease, McGee co-signs the lease (I think that's the right term). I think she would be impressed with the sacrifice he made for Richie. She will only co-sign the lease if he agrees to go to night school to finish high school/get his GED.

No, he mentioned it in the first episode this season. Aside from Night Nurse it was the only thing he'd done during the pandemic. It was some low budget thing that was shot in Bulgaria. And he didn't have any lines.

Thank you for that very helpful reminder. I must have forgotten the line.

You'd think the background actors at "Applebees" would have been better at improvising than just repeating "peas and carrots" over and over again. The whole bit was funny though.

That was exactly my thought as well. You would think they would have put more thought in it, because she actually would be able to hear the peple around her. There are other ways she could have figured out it was not real that would have worked just as well.

  19. I loved that Pat's birthday dinner was a nod to The Truman Show. I'm surprised they didn't give the actors little scenes to play at each table for realism. Especially if the actors were super intense like Cary.

Was Cary's fantasy elf movie one of the things he self-taped an audition for? Was this the first we heard of him actually getting the role?

I was thrilled that Curtis had the courage and self-awareness to cut ties with Cary. In this episode we saw some crucial differences between Curtis and Cary. Curtis can laugh off a bad review, or even a slew of them. He understands Girlies is just a job. It's a stable paycheck for however long it lasts, and maybe it will lead to something bigger and better. His sense of self isn't as wrapped up in his career.

I hope this isn't the last we see of Curtis. I still want to see Curtis and Lance drunk and talking about Cary and Brooke.

Gilmore Girls debuted on October 5, 2000. And how could anyone say ASP didn't exist? She and her crazy hats were all over the media.

I didn't check when Gilmore Girls debuted before I posted. I have no idea how the crazy rumor got started, just that ASP was asked about it in a panel at the Paley Center for Media event.

  22. The fact that the timeline is completely wrong bothers me way more than it should. I understand what the series was trying to do, but starting the series with the King assasination in April of 68 was a huge mistake. It's also dissapointing that the network didn't trust that people would be able to watch a show in which the month on the show did not line up with the month in which it aired. (Cable has been doing that kind of thing for years and it was fine. Mad Men aired the start of season 2 in July with an episode set on Valentine's Day. I refuse to believe that the cable audience is vastly smarter than network audience.) This series completely ruined not only its internal timeline but also any sense of continuity (both within the show and with the original series).

I haven't read anything about alternate endings, but I would be surprised if there were any. The Palladinos, Amy in particular, are known for having a particular vision for their work and insisting it be done their way. Actors have even said that there's no ad libbing, and that the script has to be followed word-for-word.

Maybe that's how the crazy and totally untrue rumor got started in the late 1990s/early 2000s that Amy Sherman Pallidino didn't exist, and that it was actually Aaron Sorkin writing The Gilmore Girls under a different name. They both have similar styles.
